David Piper competed in the Formula One World Championship in 1959, and then went on to race sports cars when he lost interest in single seaters. From 1962 until 1970, he often competed in his own cars at sports car events, incluidng 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring.
Perhaps most famous for racing a multitude of Ferrari's, including the 250 GTO, 250 LM and the 512S, he also competed using his own Porsche 917K, and was involved in the filming of the Steve McQueen film Le Mans, where he crashed the 917K and lost part of his leg.
He also competed using the Lola T70 seen here with the Sandeman sponsorship livery and its original British Petroleum Green colour (the colour is impregnated into the bodywork itself). This Lola is chassis number SL76/150, delivered new to the David Piper Autoracing Modena team on the 7th March 1969, and was fitted with a 5ltr Bartz Chevrolet engine.
David Piper described the Lola as "such good value for a long distance sports racing coupe at that time. It was a big step forward in all areas over the Ford GT40 against which it was measured. The car was comfortable and east to drive with no vices at all."

Aidan was the most flamboyant person in the class, often appearing bald, or with an elaborate mohican, and a crazy line in frilly shirts, which is hard to reconcile with his bearing an uncanny resemblance to Steve McQueen. And in case you're wondering if I'm insinuating anything about his lifestyle from that description of him...he has a lovely-looking girlfriend and I met her after the graduation ceremony. Anyhow, this is one of the rare moments when I steal the limelight, which was due to incompetence and laziness rather than deliberation. Looks like a still from the Sopranos or something!
(Btw, I think the woman who cut my hair was a fan of The Hunt for Red October...well, she was Latvian!).
I love the soundtrack to the movie "Bulliitt". It was a huge part of the movie's success, bringing that classic 60's feel. The Lalo Schifrin track "Shifting Gears" was the perfect compliment to the legendary Charger vs. Mustang chase sequence.
Ok , I'll have a Steve Mc Queen , Daniel Craig , some early Jack Nicholson , Benicio Del toro , some Eric Bana , a bit of Gullit .
Can I return if Im not happy with purchase,
Cool , I'll hold on to my receipt then .

It might be an understatement to say the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene of the 1980s had a huge impact on my life. Oh... and I'm also a pretty big fan of Steve McQueen's "Le Mans". So this little indie theatre looks like a place I'd regularly visit if I lived in Osaka/Kyoto.
For those that are interested, make sure you check out the trailer for the "Salad Days" documentary. (Or the Japanese trailer for those that need a Japanese version.) And don't forget to go and watch "Salad Days", Roger!

1967 Mustang fastback - BULLITT
Couple of Friday’s ago I was at “The Meadows” cruise night taking pictures when I spotted this very cool looking Mustang. In the course of chatting with its owner, I learned a few things about this car………as well as the fellow who owns it.
Let me say firstly if I were ever to own a Mustang it would be this car……..or one exactly like it. This is a 1967 Mustang fastback whereas the original BULLITT Mustang was a 1968. As the owner pointed out, very little difference between the ’67 and ’68 Mustang fastbacks - merely a few cosmetic changes. The color of this car, although very similar to the one in the BULLITT movie, is a ’67-only Dark Moss Green. The one used in the movie was a ’68-only Highland Green, the latter being slightly darker than the car in this artwork.
This car is powered by a 390 FE V-8 (6.4L) Ford big block. Factory specs on this engine are; 320 hp @ 3,600 RPM with 427 lb/ft @ 3,200 RPM, having a 10.5:1 compression ratio. However, this Mustang is not exactly “stock”. The owner indicates the 390 is backed by a 4-speed Toploader (just like the one Steve McQueen drove in the movie.) “Breathing” has been improved with the addition of tuned headers (2.25-inch) exhaust dumping into Magnaflow mufflers, an Edelbrock 650 cfm 4-barrel carburetor atop an Edelbrock aluminum intake. A three-quarter race cam adds additional performance (as well as producing a nice, deep, throaty lope at idle.)
The icing on the cake (for me) was that in the course of chatting with the owner I discovered he is and has been a graphic artist for the past 26 years. In other words we talk the same language when it comes to Photoshop and other graphic art software. He is. however, much more proficient in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign than I. I was considerably impressed in viewing his illustrations created in Adobe Illustrator.
Btw- Work continues on my “Friday night at Johnny’s drive-in”. If I can live long enough maybe I will be able to pull off an acceptable scene.
Hope ya’all enjoy………….

Things you find by sorting old boxes. A couple of original publicity photos that I bought at a street market of this mythical Steve McQueen film from 1971. Framing in process.

for throwback Thursday, a little CarArt creation from a sourced Internet image... I think I've watched this movie 50 times, but still remember the 1st time seeing as a teenager. I was never the same and I still get goose bumps.

Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway starred in the film The Thomas Crown Affair where this 1968 Ferrari 275 GTB NART debuted.
Despite being front-page news, just ten examples were built, and this car is the last of the ten.

In 1958 the theater was attacked by a gooey substances from outer-space in "The Blob."
Actors and extras ran screaming from the theater.
The "B movie" starred actor Steve McQueen (paid $3,000.)
The town is about 30 miles from Philadelphia and has an annual "Blobfest" re-enacting the screaming mob.
