Near the end of our LEGO® Robotics class, we build spinning tops with handles that use compound gearing to make those things fly! Then we program the handles to start and stop (with help from a motion sensor) ... and get down on the floor to see whose can stay spinning the longest! This is one of our kids' all-time favorite projects.

Early on, we caught onto the fact that some of our kids were having so much fun just handling the LEGO® Robotics pieces that they really weren't paying much attention to the programming, and couldn't explain what they did very well after class.
Our solution: our Robo Challenge class, where we start with a programming challenge. Can you get your motor to turn on/ off/ this direction/ that direction when you type a key/ trigger a motion sensor/ trigger a tilt sensor? Huh? As it turns out, kids can think through these puzzles if they concentrate before they get their hands on the Legos. Once they can write the program and explain it, we challenge them to find a real-life application for the program - can it be used to drive a robotic car through a factory? Turn helicopter rotors or windmill arms? We have seen some really cool creations come out of this class!
This particular car was created by a student at Grace Episcopal Day School.

Which we discourage our engineers from eating. Here's half of a bridge - our engineer is taking pains to see how well his prototype matches his design. Kids love this class!

STEM stand in for science, technology, engineering, and math, four subject areas that became a prime academic concern and priority from the federal on right down to the preschool level. Even before the STEM Initiative In Education, many schools had created their own efforts to enhance education in these areas. Help from business and government funding enabled many schools to provide a greater focus on STEM Initiative In Education and make sure that their graduates were familiar with these essential fields.
