The Stella Opera House opened in 1916. It was renamed The Stella Theater in 1918 when it began to show motion pictures. It subsequently was renamed The Ritz Theater in 1936 and closed in 1999.

In 2001 it was purchased by a Lawrence, Kansas, businessman, who said he would give it to anyone who would spend the estimated $400,000 to repair it. Apparently no one has taken him up on his offer.
