Night in Kaikoura as seen from the local lookout.
Fog is rolling in from the north of town while Orion shines in the sky.
This is one of my first nightscapes, so I know I have a lot of improvement to go but I still feel it's a nice shot :)
It's refreshing to me to know that there are still places in the world that don't suffer from light pollution. The scale of this scene is hard to convey. The peak you're looking at is called Thulagi Culi and rises 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) from where I'm standing at 3,700 meters (12,000 feet) along the knife edge of a moraine in a place called Bimthang. This is one of the most amazing places on the planet and a place I'd like to go back to some day. However, it's so remote that getting here took us about 9 days of trekking.

"Quando tu guarderai il cielo, la notte, visto che abiterò in una di esse, visto che riderò in una di esse, allora sarà per te come se tutte le stelle ridessero." Antoine de Saint-Exupery
La costellazione dell'Aquila. Per la magia di queste miriadi stelle, è stata effettuata una posa unica di 50 minuti su negativo analogico a colori con macchina fotografica Hasselblad e obbiettivo 50mm. Foto di archivio. Buona giornata
My friend Rachel Jones posed for this and I am really really happy she did. I had been thinking I wanted a guy to do it, but I think I would have been wrong! I've been struggling with the amount of black and dark tones in this photo. It looks great on black (or on the lightbox), but a lot is lost if viewed normal.

Another image from the recent visit to North Yorkshire, the very last of the direct light before the sun dips below the horizon, this was taken not long after the last posted image and from the opposite side with the sun in front instead of behind, this was the exact image I was after here and I had to work pretty quickly, I'd already managed one shot with the sun bursting through the center of the tree which was decent but I much prefer this one , literally had about a minute to change spots, frame it up and check it again before shooting, moments later the sun had gone and the tree was left in darkness.
It always amazes me how quick the sun seems to dissapear once it has got really low in the sky, an hour before when it is a lot higher it seems to be making no progress at all when you are waiting, but when you are up against it trying to get the image you want it seems to vanish ten times quicker.....
