The fifth SS Rotterdam known as "The Grande Dame" was built in 1959 at Rotterdam and used until 2000 by the operators Holland America Line (HAL) and Premier Cruises. Since 2008 it serves as a hotel restaurant and is permanently moored at Rotterdam. Although ..... , hidden by the fog perhaps it sailed away in the night :-)

Niederlande, Rotterdam, SS Rotterdam, August 2025

The fifth SS Rotterdam, also known as "The Grande Dame", is a former ocean liner and cruise ship, and has been a hotel ship in Rotterdam, Netherlands, since 2010. She was launched by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands in a gala ceremony on 13 September 1958, and was completed the following summer.

The Rotterdam was the last great Dutch "ship of state", employing the finest artisans from the Netherlands in her construction and fitting out process. Her career spanned forty-one years. She sailed from 1959 until her final retirement in September 2000.

De opkomende zware bewolking kon niet verhinderen dat de laatste zonnestralen het imposante schip nog even in de spotlight zetten.

Tour of the SS Roterdam

The Maashaven is one of the ports of Rotterdam. It is located near the Rijnhaven and the old Katendrecht district. Construction lasted from 1898 to 1905. It covers an area of 60 hectares. Like the Rijnhaven, the Maashaven was built for the transshipment of bulk cargo "on current."

The photo is an HDR panorama of 3 x 3 photos combined in Adobe Lightroom. On the left is the SS Rotterdam at its permanent mooring. The ship is a Rotterdam landmark with a hotel and restaurant on board. The ship is open for tours. Further to the right, part of the Rotterdam skyline is visible.

I did the post processing in Adobe Photoshop and added Flaming Pear filter Flood 2

The ship lies in Rotterdam at the 3e Katendrechtse Hoofd.

Made this photo and added the fuji velvia 50 color profile later in photoshop.

The SS Rotterdam, permanently moored in the port of Rotterdam, is a floating heritage ship that now also houses a hotel and restaurant. HDR made out of 4 exposures.

In her sixth life as a combination of a museum, hotel and restaurant, she opened for the general public on February 15, 2010. In June 2013 she was sold to WestCord Hotels which also owns the Hotel New York located in the former Holland America Line headquarters building in Rotterdam.

Technical stuff

It’s a single shot HDR due to the fact that I was on a boat. I used Aurora HDR 2018 to compose the HDR. Finally I added the copyright watermarks. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

In a not-so-distant past, these little portholes showed passengers a different part of the world every day.

Now, it is a museum and a conference center. And still very pretty, and a landmark in Rotterdam.

“Crowned with dozens of lamps shaped like illuminated ceramic stars, globes and diamonds, the ceiling is a real eye-catcher.”

The Odyssee Room is an impressive authentic room which used to be the dining room for all first class passengers. In terms of appearance the room is very similar to the neighboring La Fontaine Room, though it considers another story in the ceramic reliefs of the walls. These ceramic art works, once again designed by Nico Nagler, depict Homer’s famous Greek epos Odyssey. Moreover, the magnificent ceiling, again manufactured by the Porceleyne Fles from Delft, is equipped with illuminated ceramic stars, globes and diamonds.

La Fontaine Room is an atmospheric authentic room that is perfectly suitable for special gatherings up to 400 persons. Whether you are organizing a reception, conference or gala dinner, the Odyssee Room welcomes its guests in a truly inspiring and elegant ambiance.

Using grey filter lens long exposure

My dad, uncle and myself went to the opening of a Feyenoord exposition on the Euromast, September 8th 2021, just before sunset. 20 beautiful photo's of important moments in the clubs history are on display on the observation deck, 100m above ground.

euromast.nl/events/feyenoord-expositie

Euromast is a 185m tall observation tower built for the 1960 Floriade and is still one of the big attraction of the city. It's a great place to unwind and shoot some picalillies. It is usually quiet, they have plenty of benches to sit, it is photographer friendly (you can bring your tripod) and there is lots of space. The place has good energy. I can remember a date, it was our second date, with a phenomenal girl and we had some drinks while enjoying the view over the city. Magical evening. Great memories of this place. Check it out if you are visiting Rotterdam!
