I loved the rich muted colors of this Olive-backed Euphonia...another of my 'treasured species' found in Costa Rica.
08629 is about to cross Dirft Drive with 325015 and 325011 in tow running the units back to the main line and back on the juice for the run back to Scotland. With Royal Mail due to ditch rail transport as early as September 20th the sight of an 08 being used to tow these distinctive units will be history ironically a RM truck heads for the M1. The working was 1S05 15:34 Daventry to Shieldmuir.

"Euonymus /juːˈɒnɪməs/ is a genus of flowering plants in the staff vine family, Celastraceae. Common names vary widely among different species and between different English-speaking countries, but include spindle (or spindle tree), burning-bush, strawberry-bush, wahoo, wintercreeper, or simply euonymus. It comprises about 140 species of deciduous and evergreen shrubs, small trees and lianas."
Species: Poecile palustris.
Despite its name, the marsh tit actually lives in woodland and parks in England and Wales. It is very similar to the willow tit, but has a glossier black cap and a 'pitchoo' call that sounds like a sneeze! Info: The Wildlife Trust.

The Alligator Song
Everybody's getting cancer
At a geometrical rate
Maybe it's something you drank or breathed
Maybe it's something you ate
Perhaps this doesn't concern you
Hey, we've all gotta go sometime
But maybe I can tell you something
To make you change your mind
(Chorus)
The alligator dicks are shriveling up
Soon they'll all be through
Yeah, the alligator dicks are shrinking fast
And it will happen to you
It will happen to you, boys
the alligator dicks are shriveling up
and it will happen to you
They're an indicator species
Like canaries in the mine
They're the first to kick the bucket
When things might otherwise seem fine
So let's be frank and honest
As the situation begs
Boys, what are you gonna do
About that thing between your legs
(Chorus)
I'm not beating around the bush
I'm making you a promise
Say goodbye to Long Dong Silver
Hello to Tiny Thomas
You can forget about Viagra
Boys, what I mean is
It's all a matter of minutiae
When you've got a half-inch penis
(Chorus)
PCBs in the water
Pesticides in the ground
Radiation in the wind
There's poison all around
So if you care about your love life
And that good old whoop-dee-doo
We've got to stop pollution, boys
That's what i'm telling you
(Chorus)
-David Rovics
Flying fox species vary in body weight, ranging from 120–1,600 g (0.26–3.53 lb). Across all species, males are usually larger than females.
The large flying fox has the longest forearm length and reported wingspan of any bat species, but some bat species exceed it in weight. Its wingspan is up to 1.5 m (4 ft 11 in), and it can weigh up to 1.1 kg (2+1⁄2 lb).
This image was taken on Cape Tribulation Road, not far from the Daintree River, near Port Douglas in Queensland, Australia
If you have any idea about the species don't hesitate to let me know. I found a few species that look quite similar but none of them matched perfectly. A genus would already help a lot!
Handsome, slender, green-and-rusty bird of humid tropical lowlands. Lives in evergreen forest, often at edges and around adjacent clearings. Perches upright at mid-heights on vines or other exposed perches and sallies out for flying insects, especially butterflies, dragonflies, and wasps. Note the very long, slender black bill (like a giant hummingbird). Throat is white on male and buffy on female. Loud shrieking calls may draw attention.
Most of my Costa Rican birds have been photographed at Tico Rainforest B&B. Here, the owner, Victor has documented over 200 different species on his small 2 hectare property.
This is one species of a selection of day-flying moths found at a local Somerset reserve. The ease on the Covid lockdown here in the UK has enabled us to drive to exercise which is fantastic whilst the warm weather continues.

The goat or domestic goat (Capra hircus) is a domesticated species of goat-antelope typically kept as livestock. It was domesticated from the wild goat (C. aegagrus) of Southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. The goat is a member of the animal family Bovidae and the tribe Caprini, meaning it is closely related to the sheep. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goat. It is one of the oldest domesticated species of animal, according to archaeological evidence that its earliest domestication occurred in Iran at 10,000 calibrated calendar years ago.
Goat-herding is an ancient tradition that is still important in places such as Egypt. Goats have been used for milk, meat, fur, and skins across much of the world. Milk from goats is often turned into goat cheese.
Female goats are referred to as does or nannies, intact males are called bucks or billies, and juvenile goats of both sexes are called kids. Castrated males are called wethers. While the words hircine and caprine both refer to anything having a goat-like quality, hircine is used most often to emphasize the distinct smell of domestic goats.
In 2011, there were more than 924 million goats living in the world, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

In this time of stress and uncertainty, what a joy it was to find a new species tucked away in the crevice of a tree's roots! Thank you to the clever person who brightened the day of everyone who stumbled upon this mysterious creature.
Seeking an outdoor escape from the confines of my home, I decided to explore an area where I have not visited. What a delightful surprise! Over 1,400 acres and 12 miles of trails span a number of diverse habitats. Early spring wildflowers were emerging and it was a lovely day!

Had a great morning macro adventure. Checked on the Backobourkia species - Garden Orb-weaver, female, Araneinae subfamily of Classic Orb-weaving Spiders, Araneidae family
And I found her problem solving.
I am not sure what kind of beetle it was but I am sure now it is beetle juice!!!
83 images gathered hand held and manually focused at different points of the spider and her breakfast. Assembled in Adobe PS. I have Helicon and it does not provide the sharpness that Adobe does.
Speaking of sharpness the extension tube is not present here and the image is slightly sharper as to be expected.
The problem she was solving was her hunger!

The species of butterflies which flutter around at the Haga Ocean butterfly house in Solna, Sweden always varies a bit.
There are a couple of "staple" species which are always there, but I have found it great fun with every visit to see if there are any new species which I haven't shot yet.
When visiting in late October of 2022, this one was a first for me. It's a tger leafwing (Consul fabius), sometimes known as the tiger-striped leafwing, a species which can be found in Mexico down to the Amazonas in the wild.
Do zoom in on the eyes on this one, they have cool round rings all over them.
India, Kerala, Nelliampathi, Wanderoo or Lion-tailed macaque.
…just his kind of macho behavior, or really being angry,
…I decided rather to move on, instead of finding out.
📍….sometimes it is helpful to know someone who knows someone who is friends with a ranger & who is responsible for monitoring the endangered Lion-tailed Macaque...thanks Sania...🙏
So we were able to observe & photograph them in their natural habitat with the necessary distance to the animals & without tourist hype.
There is rarely & only in the company of a ranger individually or with maximal a handful of observers, feeding is absolutely forbidden, after about 2 hours the fun is over & we have to leave, so the monkeys don't get used to people & change their instinctive behaviour.
It is a zestful thing to observe the Wanderoo in the Forest Reserve of Nelliampathi, approximately 70 km straight line between the forest reserve & Kochi on the coast.
Lion-tailed macaques are omnivorous but their diets consists mainly of fruits, but also eat a wide variety of vegetation such as leaves, stems, flowers, buds fungi, occasionally insects, lizards, tree frogs & small mammals are part of their diet.
The Wanderoo monkeys live exclusively in southwestern India in the southern regions of the mountain range Western Ghats. They are diurnal rainforest dwellers & good climbers, spending most of their lives in the trees. In contrast to other macaque species, they avoid human contact & do not colonize plantations.
In their group behaviour they are similar to the other macaques: they live in groups of mostly ten to twenty animals, which are made up of a few males & many females.
There is a distinct hierarchy within the groups. Wanderoos are territorial animals, they initially defend their territory with loud screams against other groups. If this doesn't help, aggressive fights can also occur.
📌….In 2003 a report stated 3000–3500 of these animals live scattered over several areas in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka. The lion-tailed macaque ranks among the rarest & most endangered primates. Their range has become increasingly isolated & fragmented by the spread of agriculture, tea, coffee, teak wood & cinchona trees, construction of water reservoirs for watering & power generation & human settlements to support such activities. They do not live, feed or travel through plantations, destruction of their habitat & their avoidance of human proximity have led to the drastic decrease of their population.
📌….however, there is hope, actually are about 32 zoos worldwide that have this species in their zoo & participate in a common breeding program.
There are 5 zoos in Germany, 4 in China & 2 in the USA - San Diego, Birmingham, 1 in Canada, 2 Russia, the rest are spread out in zoos in Europe & a few other countries around the world....except India.

An early morning shot taken at Lake Baratz in north east Sardinia back in 2013.
I was going over some older images when I found this one which didn't look that interesting initially which is probably why I ignored it first time around. No idea which species it is.
Best viewed very large.

Santiago Peak Phacelia. Survives in only 7 locations in southern CA, on mountaintops. Shown here at the UC Botanical Garden which has a program for propagating endangered native species.
One of gorilla species roaming on his territorial space. An extinct animal caught on ethnic war and illegal hunting. Also considered deforestation pushed them on the brink of extinction.
Species: Passer montanus.
Smaller than a house sparrow and more active, with its tail often cocked. It has a chestnut brown head and nape (rather than grey) and white cheeks and collar with a contrasting black cheek spot. They are shyer than house sparrows in the UK and are rarely associated with people.
The UK tree sparrow population has suffered a severe decline, estimated at 93 per cent between 1970 and 2008. However, recent Breeding Bird Survey data is encouraging, suggesting that numbers may have started to increase, albeit from a very low point. Info: RSPB.

This Black Browed Albatross was photographed somewhere in the Southern Atlantic Ocean between Argentina and the Falkland Islands.
Whilst others on the boat were knocking back their cocktails I was often to be found out on deck, constantly being blown around whilst on the look out for seabirds. There were good numbers at times but the Black Browed Albatross and the Southern Giant Petrels were the two species that came close and showed interest. As such most of the photographs I took were of these two species. Both species but in particular the albatross hardly seemed to move a muscle and simply wheeled around floating on the updraft from the ocean.
The common blackbird is a species of true thrush. It is also called Eurasian blackbird, or simply blackbird where this does not lead to confusion with a similar-looking local species. It breeds in Europe, Asiatic Russia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. The males live up to their name but, confusingly, females are brown often with spots and streaks on their breasts. The bright orange-yellow beak and eye-ring make adult male blackbirds one of the most striking garden birds. One of the most common UK birds, its mellow song is also a favourite.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the cat family (Felidae). The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (331 to 551 lb) for the former and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 401 lb) for the latter. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognizable feature of the species.
A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur.
Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight.
It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. – Wikipedia
The Mandarin duck (Aix galericulata), is a perching duck species originally found in East Asia it has now become resident in other parts of the world, including the UK...It is medium-sized, at 41–49 cm (16–19 in) long with a 65–75 cm (26–30 in) wingspan.
The adult male is a striking and unmistakable bird. It has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers"...The breast is purple with two vertical white bars, and the flanks ruddy, with two orange "sails" at the back...The female is similar to female wood duck, with a white eye-ring and stripe running back from the eye, but is paler below, has a small white flank stripe, and a pale tip to its bill...

Dendrochilum convallariiforme is a miniature flowering species orchid from the Philippines. The flowers are about 5mms across and a lovely salmon colour, arranged along the raceme in an interesting spiral formation. There are more than 50 flowers per inflorescence.
The lesser white-fronted goose is considered an endangered species, but there are programmes to reintroduce animals into the wild to strengthen the population. Additionally it is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
This genetically distinct population is now estimated at about 20 breeding pairs or 60–80 total individuals at most. They breed in Northern Norway and overwinter in Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. There is a major stopover site at Hortobágy National Park, Hungary where the birds spend up to two months during autumn and one month during the spring migration.

Uhanalaisin arktinen hanhilaji.
1900-luvun alussa Pohjoismaissa pesi tuhansia kiljuhanhipareja, nykyisin pesiviä pareja on jäljellä alle 15. Laji rauhoitettiin Suomessa 1969. WWF:llä on kiljuhanhityöryhmä.
