*sigh* peace and quiet. blogged

Space stations are the lifeblood of galactic trade and commerce and as such, construction and defence of them is considered of singular importance to all spacefaring races. Ranging from small orbital boarding stations to remote fueling stops to solar system defence platform all the way to gargantuan, self-sustaining "colony" stations, the variety of Space stations is matched only perphaps by those ships and people they service. Among these myriad of structures, the Jupiter-class is by far the largest and most productive, able to service up to four class 10 ships and twenty class 4's at once, along with dozens of smaller classes.

Midway Station, however, is truly a giant among giants. The single largest human-built space construct, it is an updated Jupiyer-class with improved environmental controls, increased cargo capacity, larger ore refineries and enhanced shielding capacity. The Sol System Union is justifiably proud of this immense undertaking.

Situated on a quadripoint border of space between the Sol Union, Vatraxian Collective, Independent Systems Alliance, and the Planeto Corporation, Midway not only serves as the single largest trade hub in the galaxy, but also a strategic jumping-off point. Consequently, there has been almost as much fighting as trading in what is known as the "Quadpoint". The station, along with many other smaller satellite stations from various other races and groups, orbits a red dwarf star. Quad-point is unique as an important system which otherwise has very few resources of its own. There are three ice moons, one gas giant and a barren super-planet sourrounded by an immense asteroid field yielding low-quality ore.

The Vatraxian Revolution nearly caused the destruction of the station when radicals snuck a nuke onto it, but in a rare example of beauracratic incompetence leading to positive results, the container holding the bomb was accidentally labelled as waste and ejected into the sun.

Sector 47 of Midway is still undergoing decontamination procedures even five years after the Clochian rat outbreak of 2346. Progress is said to be made, although the latest estimates for full decontamination have recently been moved ahead two years.

The first Space Shuttle orbiter, Enterprise is a full-scale test vehicle used for flights in the atmosphere and tests on the ground. Officially designated Orbiter Vehicle 101 (OV-101), Enterprise is not equipped for spaceflight. It has no propulsion systems and only simulated thermal tiles.

In 1977 Enterprise completed approach and landing tests at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center in California: It was flown atop a Boeing 747 carrier airplane and also released for piloted descents to check out its systems and performance. It later underwent launch vibration tests and fit checks at other NASA centers. Although Enterprise never flew in space, it introduced a new era in space transportation and was the flagship for a fleet of reusable shuttles. The Smithsonian acquired Enterprise in 1985.

One of a photo collection taken at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Ariznoa. They have an amazing collection, and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had a great day there with the whole family. The kids love it… and so do the grown-ups. I had not been since I was a child… anyway. I hope you enjoy the image.

Lighting Effects: Multi-color LED flashlight and red and green lasers ... all shots done in camera ... meaning no post -processing done on the shots.

This 2-Set design was fashioned using a central parallel rigid stick method with layering and adding details projecting outward from the center ... building up layers and shapes with smaller additions using pinch and slide into place techniques and on the fly symmetric sculpting. This baby will be hard to duplicate and tear down since I didn't document the build steps as I went. Sorry, no tutorial. Perhaps I could make some build steps in the future.

The 432 magnet limit proved to be a challenge to get enough distinctive definition in the overall shape. This craft was designed on-the-fly, without any reference material to go by.

Slight variation from the previous shots: the two squares on the rear body section between the fin sections are rotated to straight instead of diagonal.

Neptune’s moon Triton is a fascinating object of great scientific interest. When Voyager flew by it was, with a surface temperature of 33 K, the coldest body yet found in our Solar System and had volcanic activity and geysers.

Because of Tritons retrograde orbit and its composition similar to Pluto's Triton is thought to have been a dwarf planet "captured" from the Kuiper belt. This means that Triton might be KBO (Kuiper Belt Object), a leftover building block of the solar system.

Hence, a mission to explore Neptune's largest moon would provide insight in to one of the least understood and most interesting kinds of bodies in the solar system because it contains material from the outer solar system, and thus allows the study of the composition of areas of the primordial solar system that are relatively unchanged by thermal alteration processes that occur nearer to the Sun.

Of particular interest are surface deposits of tholins, organic compounds that may be precursor chemicals to the origin of life, formed by solar ultraviolet irradiation or cosmic rays from simple carbon-containing compounds such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane(CH4) or ethane (C2H6), often in combination with nitrogen (N2). Tholins are not present on the surfaces of inner solar system bodies but ubiquitous on the larger KBOs. These organic deposits may hold keys to the biochemical origin of life.

In addition to its interest as a KBO, Triton is also geological active. During a flyby, Voyager's camera captured from a distance of about 99,900 kilometres eruptions near the Tritons south pole, shooting dark particles up to 8 km high into Triton's thin atmosphere. These geysers may be a link to a hypothesized subsurface ocean. Each eruption of Tritons geysers may last up to a year, driven by the sublimation of about 100 million cubic metres of nitrogen ice.

The only detailed information we have about the surface of Triton is from the Voyager 2 fly-by in 1989, which only imaged one hemisphere of the moon. But the 40% of Tritons surface images by Voyager 2 show icy plains, craters, valleys and ridges, which may be the result of tectonic activity and icy volcanism.

55% of Triton's surface is covered with frozen nitrogen, with water ice comprising 15–35% and dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide) forming the remaining 10–20%. The surface also shows deposits of tholins.

It is also believed that an ammonia-rich water ocean exists beneath the icy surface.

As an analysis of the crater density have shown, Tritons surface is very young, with regions varying from an estimated 50 million years old to just an estimated 6 million years old.

Triton is one of the few moons with a thin, but noticeable nitrogen atmosphere, which extends 800 kilometres above its surface. Tritons atmosphere is mainly composed of nitrogen, the two other known components are CH4 and CO. Other possible components of the Triton's atmosphere are argon and neon, but since they were not detected by Voyager 2 their abundances are unlikely to exceed a few percents. Tritons upper atmosphere contains significant amounts of molecular and atomic hydrogen, which is produced by the photolysis of methane.

A few kilometres above the surface, within the troposphere, nitrogen ice particles form clouds in the Moon’s troposphere, which rises to an altitude of about 8 km.

Tritons surface temperature is about 38 K, but it most likely increased by 1 K due to global warming as Triton approaches the southern-hemisphere summer. A season on Triton lasts a little over 40 years, and Triton passed the southern summer solstice in 2000.
