"Taverna Toxotis" Greek Restaurant

Quintessential Greek fast food.

With access to a grill, I couldn't resist cooking some Pork Souvlaki, using a recipe I got from a Greek coworker many years ago. She also taught me how to make tzatziki but it's much simpler to buy it from a store (most of the time). I had this with garlic lemon pepper potatoes. Simple. Delicious.

Pot Luck dinners are always fun! You don't always know who's bringing what until the big reveal. That's just part of the fun. Meeting new friends is often another huge part of it!

Our feast started with some delicious appetizers, including Spring Rolls, Guacamole and Nachos, and a Pumpernickel Bread Dip.

Our delicious mains included Oven Baked Pork Ribs, a Chicken Curry with Potatoes, a Chicken over Rice dish, Pork with Tofu and Eggplant, and Pork Souvlaki. Sides included Asparagus, and Scalloped Potatoes. It was all delicious!

To finish our meal, we had Ube Mochi bites, Mango Sago, and Tiramisu Cake. The Ube Mochi bites were the popular choice!

Everything was delicious and it was a very enjoyable evening!

Souvlaki, the Greek version of kebap. Notably this greek delicatessen comes with authentic "Tzatziki" sauce, and is all wrapped and ready to eat easily by hand, which contributes to the Souvlaki being the fast-food of choice for Greeks.

A typical Souvlaki is made from pork, beef or chicken. The beef is in the form of "kofte", pork and chicken comes either in shavings or kebap.

Typical ingredients of the Souvlaki, are fresh sliced tomatoes, fresh onion (sliced, not choped), and tzatziki.

Other variations include french fries, paprika or even mayonnaise (modern) and mustard.

The Souvlaki is part of the Greek culture and it's a must try. This delicious street food can be found in abundance everywhere in Greece, but make sure you choose where to eat it carefully - always recommend you ask someone local where a good souvlaki can be found.

Captain America: "Hey!!"

Tony Stark: "No, really, old timer, it's all good. I hacked Nick Fury's SHIELD credit card, he's buying!"

Captain America: "Rogers that! Uh, you see what I did there? 'Rogers.' Heh! Get it, Steve Rogers? Someone? Anyone? Well fine. Fought AND froze in World War Two, by cracky! Think I'd get a little respect from you whippersnappers..."

Riffing off the bonus end credit scene of the magnificent Avengers movie, Gail cooked us up a shawarma feast this week, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to set up a photoshoot, which had to be hastily completed 'cos the food was way too good to allow to get cold!

I don't know how popular the dish is in the U.S.A but it's no real surprise to us in Australia, as it's not far removed from Greek souvlakis, which have been popular in Oz since, oh, last century at least.

Ingredients: marinated roast lamb, mint leaves, spiced yogurt, enclosed in a wrap.

Rather scrummy!

Good on you, Joss Whedon, for raising the profile of this beaut, traditional recipe!

And ta to Gail for providing the tucker and helping style the food on set...

Itaewon is a neighbourhood of Seoul, with a history of hosting foreigners visiting the country, either as servicemen or as expats. Itaewon is well known in Seoul as the place to go for the best international food in the city, whether you are looking for Indian curry, Greek souvlaki, or classic American cuisine, you can find so many different options. The alleyways behind the main street are great to explore, in this the most multi-cultural part of the city.

Three meats were chicken, pork, and gyros, which itself is two meats (beef and lamb) so really four meats...

Anyway, good! :)

Cozmos Souvlaki; Nepean, Ottawa, Ontario.

Kind of a big bento but after the crazy storm last week here in Seattle I've been craving heartier food :)

Right side: Souvlaki with Roasted Cauliflower with Tahini Sauce I took the short cut and thinned store bought roasted garlic hummus, it's fantastic with the cauliflower! Steamed Parisian carrots tossed with a bit of butter and brown sugar.

Left side: mixed olives (big green one stuffed with blue cheese), crinkle cut Persian cucumbers and my favorite Greek Tomatoes

ham, sausage, spinach and cheese on souvlaki bread

Last night my girlfriend and I decided to barbeque again, this time making some Greek Chicken Souvlaki. Mmmmm

Recipe:

-Make a marinade consisting of:

-1/4 cup olive oil

-1/4 cup lemon juice

-2 tsp. oregano

-2 tsp. garlic powder

-1/2 tsp. salt

-1 tsp black pepper

-touch of paprika

-little bit of honey

-Cut 2 chicken breasts into chunks, and place into a bowl with the marinade. Leave in fridge for at least an hour and a half. Place onto skewers and BBQ.

-Serve with Tzaziki sauce or Greek yogurt.

My girlfriend made a tomato/pepper/avocado/cilantro salad to go with it, I'll post about that soon.

Увы, но к сожалению у них получился довольно поверхностный список, например есть Ульрих Шнаусс, но нет The Radio Dept (wtf?!), плюс они забыли: Skywave, Pinkshinyultrablast, Pia Fraus, Resplandor, Malory, Air Formation, An April March, Dråpe, Asalto al Parque Zoológico, Flyying Colours, Ringo Deathstarr, и ещё полсотни групп.

Для уравновешивания я составил альтернативный Top 100.

Friday was night for greek fast food. It was a challenge, how steady can you hold a camera at 1/10 second? It's a good thing small cameras have great stabilizers. Looks like clear weather ahead, have a great weekend! Feb 17, 2012 L1200306.dng

A Coney Island is a type of restaurant that is popular in the northern United States, particularly in Michigan, as well as the name for the Coney Island hot dog after which the restaurant style is named.

Coney Islands are a unique type of Greek American restaurant. Two of the most well-known Coney Island restaurants are the Lafayette Coney Island and the American Coney Island, which are located adjacent to one another on Lafayette St. in downtown Detroit. They have a common root, with the original restaurant having been established by Greek immigrant brothers Bill and Gus Keros in 1914. The brothers got into a business dispute soon thereafter, and in 1917 split their restaurant into the two establishments that exist today.

The menu of all Coney Island restaurants centers on the Coney Island hot dog, which is a natural casing hot dog in a steamed bun dressed with chili, diced onions, and yellow mustard. This item is usually referred to simply as a "coney." Another popular item on most Coney Island restaurant menus is the "loose hamburger," which consists of crumbled ground beef in a hot dog bun, covered in the same condiments as a Coney Island hot dog. Many Coney Islands also serve "chili fries," which are french fries covered in chili, sometimes with mustard or cheese added.

Many Coney Islands offer other Greek and Greek-American dishes, such as Gyros, Souvlaki, Shish Kebab, Spanakopita, Saganaki, and Greek salads, as well as usual American diner fare, such as regular hamburgers, sandwiches, breakfast items, and desserts.

The new shopfront of Medallion was tempting me with smells of lamb on the spit over hot, uh... gas burners :) So one day I decided I needed to try it.

And it was good! The meat was tender not too salty, like Stalactites tends to be. Still, Stalactites meat is a bit more juicy and packs mroe of a punch from the herbs and spices.

They used to be a cake and coffee place, but adding a souvlaki and giros bar seems to have paid off. The sidewalk tables were packed with a lunch crowd.

Having a huge birthday dinner here tonight. Cannot wait. I enjoy finding some amazing "old school" venues for parties. such as the Top of the Ritz, Elands Bay , La Perla, Warmwaterberg Spa, Ronnies Sex Shop , Rockhaven Farmhouse, Pons Noodle Bar and Diaz Tavern. The shortlist for this year was "The Wooden Shoe" (just missed the boat, they were closed for renovations, but did respond to a message I left on their answering machine, which is rare nowadays) "The Buzzby Grill" and "Rhodes Memorial Restaurant" (they need a large number of confirmed bookings to open at night). This was taken with my phone during our scout on Monday night. The image has been comp'd a bit because of the crap quality of my Nokia but the chairs are def under this marvelous wooden window, and yes, that's the owner there, who's been running the restaurant for over 25 years. Hopefully I will find the time to take some snaps with a proper camera tonight.. No pressure...!

Bar Guide: Simple, traditional greek food the way it should be served, with a chat and a smile. This is by no means a 5 star establishment but that's what makes it all the more special. Love it.
