Fall colors in southwest Colorado.

The desert Southwest is a land of extreme contrasts. From the seductive curves of sand dunes to the rugged vistas of the canyons, from the intricate sandstone hoodoos to the massive alcoves, surprises abound every corner! There are always new gems to explore and photos to be taken. Sharing these treasures and seeing the excitement in everyone's eyes are the greatest joy.

I was going to add a description before posting this, but just realized I forgot to mark this as private...

But, I guess I don't have much to add anyway. I happened to be driving around southwest Detroit and noticed the smoke about a mile away from this house fire. I managed to get quite a few shots from the alley behind the house where a small crowd had gathered. Unfortunately, this happens way too often in Detroit.

The desert with its intriguing formations, expansive vistas, grand canyons, deep slots, and otherworldly badlands will always have my heart! There are countless hidden gems down every turn on a dirt road to explore.

Always great to find a lifer bird. First ever Flame-colored Tanager. Sorry for my absence as we are traveling. Had to post something so you all would know that I am still around.

This is the left fork of North Creek in the Kolob section of Zion National Park. This is the creek that leads to The Subway. While The Subway is definitely the highlight of the hike, there are countless small waterfalls along the way and if you go in late October the fall colors are spectacular.

(And if there was any question as to this being in the West, I actually had to step around a dead rattlesnake to take this picture.)

This arch in Northern Arizona stands 80 feet tall but do to its proximity to nothing is rarely visited.

With about 45 minutes until sunset, New Mexico Rail Runner train no. 519 readies itself for its next trip out of downtown Santa Fe. As with most views around this northern New Mexico city, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains loom in the background.

Originally, this 1880-built depot served as the northern terminus for AT&SF's branch from the main at Lamy, NM; a line that's currently operated by the Santa Fe Southern. Since 2008, the depot has also been hosted the New Mexico Rail Runner, as seen here.

This particular train will only run as far south as Albuquerque, before tying up for the day, although the service extends as far south as Belen.

Finding Barrel Cactus below the Superstition Mountain Peaks, is like finding treasure, especially when they bloom in spring, turning vivid shades of pink and red. This is the time of year when this part of the Arizona desert looks more like a blooming botanical garden, and is a great time for photographers to explore, as in a very short while, this particular area once again becomes the kingdom of the rattlesnake.

This was taken out of the window of a Southwest 737.
