One of the largest and slowest moving grasshoppers, lubbers can attain 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length at maturity, and cause a great deal of damage to an orchid collection. Different species are found in various geographic regions of the United States: eastern lubbers (Romalea guttata, found from central North Carolina west through southern Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas to Texas and throughout Florida), horse lubbers (Taeniopoda eques, native to Texas and Arizona, down into Mexico), plains lubbers (Brachystola magna, most commonly found on the prairies of the western part of the United States and Mexico) and southeastern lubbers (Romalea microptera, which spread out from North Carolina to Florida, west to Louisiana and northeast to Tennessee).

Tangara labradorides labradorides

(Metallic-green tanager / Tangara verdinegra)

Metallic-green Tanagers inhabit humid montane forests in the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They are mostly blue-green in color, although strongly they appear to be blue or green can change, depending upon light conditions.

Their diet consists almost entirely of arthropods and fruits. Metallic-green Tanagers are usually found in pairs or small groups and often join flocks consisting of multiple tanager species.

There are two recognized subspecies of the Metallic-green Tanager (Storer 1970):

-labradorides Boissinneau 1840; type locality Santa-Fé de Bogota [Colombia]

Occurs in western and central Colombia and in western Ecuador (Storer 1970, Hilty and Brown 1986, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001).

-chaupensis Chapman 1925; type locality Chaupe, Cajamarca, Peru

Occurs in southeastern Ecuador and in northern Peru (Storer 1970, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001, Schulenberg et al. 2007).

The Saffron Toucanet is restricted to humid forests of southeastern Brazil, northeastern Argentina, and eastern Paraguay, and usually is uncommon. Despite its distinctive appearance, the Saffron Toucanet has not been well-studied, and little is known about its natural history. Saffron Toucanets often are quiet, even secretive; they forage for fruit, and perhaps young birds and eggs, in mid levels and the canopy of forest. Global IUCN - Near Threatened.

The rufous-bellied pademelon is the sole species of pademelon found in Tasmania, and was formerly found throughout southeastern Australia. Pademelons are abundant and widespread across mainland Tasmania, and are also found on the nearby King and Furneaux Islands. This species was extirpated from the Australian mainland during the 19th century. Rainforest, sclerophyll forest, and scrubland are preferred, although wet gullies in dry open eucalyptus forest are also used. Such places, next to open areas where feeding can occur, are especially favoured.

The Tasmanian pademelon is a herbivore feeding on a wide variety of plants, from herbs, green shoots and grass, to some nectar-bearing flowers.

Pademelons are solitary and nocturnal, spending the daylight hours in thick vegetation. After dusk, the animals move onto open areas to feed, but rarely stray more than 100 metres from the forest edge. (Wikipedia)

As we walked through Mount Field National Park, a rain forest that definitely lived up to its description, we came across this mother pademelon and her joey. They sat very quietly in a small clearing. The joey looked at us briefly, but lost interest quite soon. This little one is probably between 160 and 190 days old and will leave its mother's care when it is around 9 months old. Pademelons are tiny relatives of the Kangaroo. This female weighs about ten pounds and is maybe two feet tall.

Two weeks ago, I began observing activity in an Osprey nest in Southeastern Ontario and witnessed a single nestling being attended by both parents. Female ospreys lay three to four eggs three days apart with hatching taking place in the same sequence. Upon my return to the nest site, I observed the previous chick had significantly grown in size if not in beauty. I took a few portraits of the single chick with its mother thinking that there might have been only a single nestling. However, sometime later a younger sibling popped up in the open and I now suspect a third, still younger chick might be laying out of view in the bottom of nest. Time will tell. The adult male was very busy making food deliveries to this Thousand Islands address, but also caught its breath and took a rest on his favorite snag limb some distance away before resuming its hunt for fish. Stay tuned for the next update.

This tiny fella is still hanging around. It was a great test for my new Tamron 90mm macro. Probably the most difficult snake to photograph I've encountered, he's very tiny (about 5 inches) and squirmy.

Taken in the early morning in the mist of the southeastern mountains, and returning an ephemeral environment for the viewer; given a painterly feel. Autumn gives a sense of otherworldliness not found in other seasons.

These grasshoppers live in the Southeastern United States. This one was about 3 inches long. These things are terrified of children & I can't say I blame them. My students at school love to watch them, but I constantly have to stop them from poking them with sticks.

Joshua Tree National Park is an American national park in southeastern California, east of Los Angeles and San Bernardino, near Palm Springs. The park is named for the Joshua trees (Yucca brevifolia) native to the Mojave Desert. Originally declared a national monument in 1936, Joshua Tree was redesignated as a national park in 1994 when the U.S. Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act. Encompassing a total of 790,636 acres (1,235.4 sq mi; 3,199.6 km2)—an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island—the park includes 429,690 acres (671.4 sq mi; 1,738.9 km2) of designated wilderness. Straddling the border between San Bernardino County and Riverside County, the park includes parts of two deserts, each an ecosystem whose characteristics are determined primarily by elevation: the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert. The Little San Bernardino Mountains traverse the southwest edge of the park.
