This weeks Saturday Night Special is a pair of Southern GP-30's. The only information on the slide mount is July 13, 1983. No photographer or location listed.
My first visit to Virginia yielded me a taste of the Southern. This southbound freight is departing Potomac Yard with a Southern painted SD40-2 in the lead. The Southern and Potomac Yard are now just a memory.

Southern 9996 is seen at Denison Texas in May 1984. It was built by PS in 1962 as a new, roll-up-door design boxcar with 3 openings per side. The roll-up doors proved unpopular, and the fleet of 200 cars were rebuilt into various types of cars including bulkhead flats, coil cars, and boxcars with four Youngstown sliding doors as seen here. This car was likely converted in the early 70s, but is shown here about a year after repainting. The cars retained their Hydraframe-60 cushion underframes, as seen noticeably here. A Southern 86' auto parts box car built by Greenville Steel Car passes through Manville on the Lehigh Line. At the time new automobiles were still being produced in New Jersey.

Using Nikon's Creative Lighting System (CLS). Nikon SB910 firing from back of the subject towards Camera which created the aura effect. SB700 Firing towards other direction with 2 Stop Exposure compensation to lit the the background curtain. Camera was set to High Speed Sync mode, so could achieve 1/500 s exposure.
