Last night I saw Living Colour’s sold out show at Leesburg’s Tally Ho Theater, this being my second time seeing the band, and from the same venue eight years ago. It was my younger brother, Dave who got me into them way back when their debut album, Vivid dropped in 1988, after hearing him play that one on cassette repeatedly. While only a couple of songs were played from that album, unfortunately, Corey Glover and co more than made up for it, with a focus on tracks from their second album, Time’s Up, and their third one, Stain, which is now 30 years old. They also performed a blistering cover of Bad Brains’ Sailin’ On, prompting a few very enthusiastic fans to try and form a mosh pit. These guys have been kicking for quite a while now, and as a fan, you wonder if they’ve still got it, especially regarding the kind of music bands like Living Colour do, but all fears were quickly put to rest. Founding member and guitarist Vernon Reid played (and looked) like he was still in his twenties, and I still think the guy is one of the best guitarists alive today. Original member and drummer Will Calhoun was simply on fire from start to finish, never skipping a beat while occasionally going off on some spectacular tangents, and longtime bassist Doug Wimbash was simply amazing. Singer Corey Glover, while not in the kind of shape he was some 35 years ago, when he was flexing Body Glove-clad muscles (and who is?), sang so beautifully and so powerfully, while also having some fun joking around with both band and audience members. A surprise highlight for me was their blissful rendition of Solace of You, as well as hardcore scorcher Time’s Up, and of course the now classic, Cult of Personality. Opening act, the Allan Scott Band were a pleasant surprise, as well! It was good to see so much love for Living Colour last night - a band who struggled to get the recognition they truly deserved, and who paved the way for so many others. #livingcolour #vernonreid #coreyglover #willcalhoun #dougwimbash #tallyhotheater #leesburgva #funkmetal #heavymetal #metal #hardcoremusic #rockandroll #livemusic #concert #soldout
