Shot from the trail to Laurel Falls, Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Photographed from the trail leading to Laurel Falls in the Smokey Mountains. The sun was just starting to peak out from behind the mountains on the left causing the tops of these trees to glow.

I like the silent church before the service begins, better than any preaching.

John Cable built this mill around 1867. The overshot waterwheel was recently replaced along with much of the timber on the mill building. The new wheel normally lasts ten years. During it's early years the mill ground grains and was a sawmill. Much visited site in the Smokey Mountains National Park in Tennessee.

The John Cable Mill is the most visited site on the Cades Cove Loop. Numerous millstones line the walkway to the mill. A great site in the Smokey Mountain National Park.

This was my first visit to this waterfalls. Evidently, the water was not as profuse as normal as seen in other photos I have found on the Internet. The hour was very early; my wife and I had hiked up to the falls in pitch darkness, which was fun as we used our caving headlamps to peer into the dark forest hoping the the sounds we kept hearing were not bears, which are quite prevalant in the Smokies. The leaves on the rocks reminded me of glitter that someone had sprinkled over everything.

I think it is entrancing how a mass of sodden leaves drifting around in a small pool magically transform themselves into a golden swirling vortex of color when you capture them in a long exposure.

This little pool is tucked away just beyond the Alfred Reagan place on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail near Gatlinburg.

Taken from the Foothills Parkway in the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains near Townsend, TN.

Secret lies in flowers, in sky, in clouds.

Secret hides in mountains, in rivers.

..What secret lies in those humans, who conquered them all?

I love it when a picture is perfect SOOC.

I found this gorgeous little Carolina Rockrose, (Helianthenm carolinianum) also known as Frostweed on Clingman's Dome, the highest peak in Tennessee.

It rained most of this day and I was lucky enough to find this bloom during a dry spell.

Captured somewhere in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in Tennessee, U.S.A. Though this was a little late in the season to capture the beautiful colors, there were still some trees reluctant to surrender.

I had seen a photo of this spot in a book by Bill Campbell and Nye Simmons years ago. Ever since, I have searched for it on my annual trip to the Smokies. I knew it was on the Middle River in the Tremont section of the park, but no matter how many times I hiked up that silly river, I just couldn't find it. Until this year. Finally!

I made the long drive up to Clingman's Dome in the Smokey Mountain National Park four times last week hoping to get a shot of the Milky Way during the darkness of the new Moon.

The first three times I ended up driving back down the mountain disappointed due to the summit being fogged in.

This shot was taken on the fourth night when the weather cleared up a bit right after sunset and the Milky Way just glided up right between these two banks of clouds.

Looking at the shot now, I'm very glad I made that fourth trip up the mountain!

If you would like to see more about how to take your own Milky Way shots, check out my blog article:

Take care!

Abrams Falls, Great Smokey Mountains National Park, Tennessee.

Took this shot on the return trip from the Laurel Falls in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.

This shot was captured while on the Cades Cove Loop in the Smokey Mountains National Park in eastern Tennessee.

Early morning shot at Cades Coves Loop in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. I believe this is still on the Tennessee side of the park. It had just been raining and the clouds were still amazing.

The Great Smokey Mountains National Park, TN, 2013.

The old moon was shining, older than the oldest ancestors of us.

...And the night was forever young, like us.

We went camping in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park a few days ago.

The Tail of the Dragon is a twisting, winding, narrow road that follows the little Tennessee river along the eastern side of the Smokey Mountains and intersects both Tennessee and North Carolina. It is a favorite ride for motorcycle enthusiasts. This photo shows just one of the many places one can stop along the road to see God's creation in all its glory.

I stumbled upon this wonderful, swirling pool of autumn leaves near Laurel Falls in the Smoky Mountain National Park. I used a seven frame HDR on this perfectly overcast day to capture the moment.

One of the greatest things in life is to have a waterfall all to yourself.

Found this spot in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park—or at least the southern edge of the park ... along the Tail of the Dragon, a route that skirts the bottom of the park which is a favorite ride for bikers.

Is it in my head.

This is one of those photos that I’m really proud of but it sat on my computer for a few months in the background. I kept coming back to it again and again but wasn’t totally sure. Now I’m sure. Shot towards the end of this past winter in GSMNP.

Clingman's Dome, atop the Smokey Mountain National Park, is often (usually) covered by fog and clouds...but if you are lucky enough to be there when the summit is clear....
