I really liked the results of projecting 2D images onto a 3D form to articulate its contour, so I decided to draw some vertical lines in Illustrator and project onto my body and see what would happen.

Believe it or not, I met Juhan Sonin three years ago on librarything.com, a social media site for book lovers. LibraryThing has an interesting feature which compares similarity of libraries and Juhan came out as in my top 3 list.
Organizing books by color is definitely a first - I must try this some time!
Compare our libraries - though clearly Juhan's is much bigger!

1. Testcard
(Week 1-2) Devise a testcard, 8.5x11, for a black & white photocopy machine
The card is basically a set of questions or exercises - point, type specimen, line, pattern, half-tone, grey-scale spectrum, moire - designed to test the machine's effectiveness or value.
The testcard should explore not only the effective (proper?) function of the photocopier, but also any other qualities (Test the limits of its language/your language)
Investigate both the history and teh working mechanics of thsi machine, then (week 3-4) extend the scope of the testcard to include this kind of informaion.

Variations
Background
When I shot these photos, I did not have a timer cable release with me. If I were to shoot these at a small aperture, I would have to set the camera on bulb while keeping my finger on the shutter release for the entire exposure. To minimize the risk of completely ruining the photos, I've decided to vary the aperture values for the different exposures instead of varying the time and keeping a constant aperture value.
HDR Processing
Note that it is generally not recommended that you vary the aperture values for images intended for HDR processing. If you use software like Photomatix to perform tone-mapping, for example, the varying levels of focus on the photo will create blurry results. I have had to apply a bit more USM than usual for this image. And if you view large, you can see that the grains are quite visible.
Results
I am happy with the HDR result though--the wider aperture gave it enough exposure to show the golden reflection under the bridge, and the small aperture contribute to the oh-so-gorgeous star bursts from the lights.

The 南天門 (南天门 “Southern Gate to Heavey” Nán tiānmén) is located at the end of 十八盤 (十八盘 Shíbā pán). It was formerly known as 三天門 (三天门 “Three day gate” Sān tiānmén) and 天門關 (天门关 “Gate to Heaven” tiānmén guān).
Located 1460 meters above sea level, the mountain is the most dangerous cliff between 飛龍巖 (飞龙岩 “Flying dragon bounder” Fēi lóngyán) and 翔鳳嶺 (翔凤岭 ”Ridge of phoenix in flight” Xiáng fèng lǐng). It was named so because it looks as if the gate of heaven was opened at the location.
It was built by a monk from 布山 (“Cloth mountain” Bù shān) in 元中統五年 Yuan Dynasty (1264). The gate was built as 閣樓式建築 (“loft style architecture”) with stones formed as an arch.
The imposing form was accented by dots on the red wall and the yellow-glazed roof top. The couplet at the side of the door reads: 門闢九霄仰步三天勝跡;階崇萬級俯臨千嶂奇觀 (门辟九霄仰步三天胜迹,阶崇万级俯临千嶂奇观 Mén pì jiǔxiāo yǎng bù sān tiān shèngjì, jiē chóng wàn jí fǔ lín qiān zhàng qíguān)

Todd Lehman – Artist Statement
Nineteenth-century English critic Walter Pater said that all art aspires to be music. More recently, in a ''New York Times'' interview, Spanish painter Antoni Tapies said, "One should compare modern art to music." Who can argue with that? Abstract painting then is about visual noise and energy-and about the beauty of silence-all of which are certainly related to music.
While I sometimes work on large canvases, I prefer the hard surface of paper and often collage newspaper or various handmade papers, including rice papers, into a painting. Tools? Brushes, of course, but also a variety of scraping and scratching tools.
What inspires my paintings? Two things-landscape and architecture. Well, maybe three things. The energy of New York City is inescapable. We New Yorkers are addicted to the visual noise and drive of the city, but for obvious reasons we relish moments of solitude and meditation. So my paintings are sometimes like a raucous traffic jam, other times like the quiet of a leaf falling in a Japanese garden. They are the pages of a visual autobiography.
泰山天街 (“Heavenly Street / Street in the Sky” Tàishān tiān jiē) is a street up on 泰山 (Mount Tai Tàishān) which begins at 南天門 (南天门 “Southern Gate to Heaven” Nán tiānmén) going eastwards and ends at the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple.
The total length is approximately 一華里 (一华里 1 Chinese mile). The northern section of the street is called 北天街 (“Northern Heavenly Street” Běi tiān jiē) [pictured]. Filled with a diversity of businesses and lodging options, it looks like as city as well as a buzzing street up in the sky, making it an fascinating place to visit. (1 / SML Translate)

Did Flickr change its view counting method after the recent UI change which shows photos in a never-ending scroll?
In the past, my typical daily view count circles around 3000 views per day, but as you can be seen in the screenshot here, it has gone up to the 5-digit range. So much so that in typical Flickr fashion they have probably locked my account two days before which moved view count to zero.
I know that they do inspect “suspicious activities” by temporarily locking accounts because every time my photos get used on prominent web sites, my view count will soar, and then immediately the next day I would see my view count drop to zero. But I am fairly certain that this is not such instance.
Also noted: normal new photo views typically circles around 50 at most daily but something posted yesterday now will circle in the 200+ values, leading me to suspect that something is going on — though exactly what is unclear.

Red ribbons with locks were seen all over the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple.
Similar sightings were seen in almost every temple I have been to during this trip, so I asked the local what it was about. They told me that Chinese couples visit the temples before they get married, and the locks were used to “bind” their love together forever.

Variations
Note that it is generally not recommended that you vary the aperture values for images intended for HDR (Wikipedia: High dynamic imaging) processing. If you use software like Photomatix to perform tone-mapping, for example, the varying levels of focus on the photo will create blurry results. I have had to apply a bit more USM (Wikipedia: Unsharp Mask) than usual for this image. And if you view large, you can see that the grains are quite visible.
HDR Results
I am happy with the HDR result though--the wider aperture gave it enough exposure to show the golden reflection under the bridge, and the small aperture contribute to the oh-so-gorgeous star bursts from the lights.
Black + White Processing
By using Photoshop's channel mixer for the black and white conversion, I was able to manipulate the the local contrast further. The absence of color united the tonal values of the two orthogonal axis of the bridge. The overall composition seems to have improved, and now looks like a giant extruded plus sign with very heavy industrial ornaments.
B+W Results
The result is very rewarding and I'd like to thank Moxette for her suggestion to process this as a black and white photograph. :)

Ancient Silence No. 3
Oil on paper
21" x 17", 2009

Summary
Typographic landscape of a city described through visually counting from 1 to 100.
Setup
These were shot with my first digital camera, the Sony Mavica FD7.
Statement
This was my first photography project. It started out as a project for a typography class while I was in college. Like most graphic design assignments at Yale, it was very open ended. We were asked to show the experience of a city through the language of typography. I have always been interested in numbers, and I as such I decided to run around New Haven and photograph numbers which represent the city, from 1 to 100.
The series is to be projected on the wall as slideshow. The numbers are recognizably New Haven, and most who have been in New Haven can recognize the sense of time and space as they go through the series. Some commented that it reminded them of Sesame Street.
I thought of extended this to different neighborhoods in New York, but I never had the time to work on more of them after college, and as such I have only completed the first and only one...
The original series was displayed via a conventional slide projector. In order to best-simulate the original intention on a computer, view the set as a slideshow and set the speed to fast.

The Art Of Roseline Koener
“... as a painter I feel that I have in my possession the means of moving others in the direction in which I myself am driven ...”
- Paul Klee, On Modern Art
Her grandfather was a collector, her mother a painter: what did eleven-year-old Roseline Koener want for her twelfth birthday? Oil paints! The following Christmas, her first book on art history arrived, and every week thereafter a book on a different artist. Soon Roseline Koener was studying with the masters. Then came la Cambre (a school founded by members of the Bauhaus) which drew her away not only from the conservatism of her earliest efforts but from art-making itself. In its place she turned to archeology and art history, working after graduation at a succession of museums. Unfulfilled creativity prompted study abroad and travel: Dublin, San Francisco, New York... During this period she learned (from Manuel Neri) “to draw not from seeing, but from feeling”. It was the culture of Africa that transformed her truly. “Its color, fabric, texture” changed the Belgium-born artist into a world cosmopolitan. Roseline Koener’s art strikes one immediately with its color, patterned space and tactile qualities.
Koener’s Westhampton atelier presents the visitor with an array of objects -- ceramics, baskets, linens, paintings and sculptures. Only a shelf’s worth of big bottles of dry pigment divides her workspace from living quarters. The former teems with her works, as well as huge basketfuls of colored fabrics, colored papers, occult-evoking sculpture collections, books, music -- much of this evidence of the wide range of her interest in indigenous cultures.
Roseline Koener’s work process tends to the spontaneous; her media -- fabric and paper foremost among them -- are arranged, layered, inserted, and glued together according to the dictates of color. Markings, dots, and lines then enrich her distinctively beautiful tonal field, bringing into play her highly-developed drawing sense and command of painting technique, until the fragments merge into the single new piece.
Koener’s colors –- her blue, pink, yellow, and green blended with pink and green, purple and blue – make for strong visual poetry; vibrant and intense. She creates them by mixing dry pigment with egg white and an emulsifier, or, alternatively, the dry pigment with ink. The dots or freely drawn lines guide us beyond these exuberant colors into the colors within.
Intellect plus depth of understanding, combined with force of impulse and spontaneity -- all together constitute this artist’s distinctiveness. Her experiences both intellectual and emotional, her biography of courageous embracings and of castings-off, all these have been translated into her work, which guides and pulls us toward her.
“To see the different beauty, to encounter the soul of the world, to discover the universal humanity”, Roseline Koener travels frequently, in-between stints as educator and working artist. Her ultimate goal as artist is to evoke spirituality through the illuminating light of her colors. It should be no surprise that she counts Matisse and Rothko among the artists that enchant her most.

Lee was born in Seoul, Korea in 1960. He attended Sunhwa Art High School and received a B.F.A. in Sumi-e painting and drawing from HongIk, University, Seoul, and an M.F.A. from the National University of Tokyo Arts and Sciences, Japan.
Lee was active in the resistance movement during the reign of South Korean military dictator President Park and lost many friends during the reign of terror leading up to Park's assassination in 1979. Lee immigrated to Japan in 1988, where he would spend the next ten years establishing himself as a leading contemporary artist.
Lee has been featured in group and solo shows throughout museums and galleries in Japan and Korea, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and the Kawasaki City Museum. Since moving to New York in 1999, he has exhibited at the Sonoma Museum of Visual Arts, CA, the Hammond Museum, NY, the Korean Embassy, Washington, DC, the Japan American Art Association at the Tenri Gallery, NY, the International Art Festival Lantern of the East, Los Angeles, CA, and more.
Lee has lectured in Japanese and Korean universities on "Oriental Sensation and Neo-postmodernism" and "Contemporary Visual Art and Psychology." He is a tenured instructor of Sumi-e, oil painting and drawing at the Nakano Art Center, Japan, and currently teaches Sumi-e painting at the National Jewish Council Center, NY. He is a member of the New Century Artists, NY, the Japanese Artists Association, NY, the Korean Japanese Exchange Art Association, Tokyo, and the Japan International Art Group, Tokyo.
About the work
Jongwang Lee's massive, liquid paintings, rendered with a complex and precise mixture of resin, oil paint and pigments, express the artist's quest for a balance between the spiritual and the physical worlds. Examining the proverbial return to the womb, Lee paints human forms that float in a watery substance and inhabit a world before time.
Ironically, Lee's spiritual quest has resulted in a series of sculptural paintings that evoke opulent, overgrown gemstones. One has the illusion of gazing deep into a cross-section of colored and decorated amber, peering into the past through layers of time.
While Lee's recent work has a contemporary Pop Art sensibility-with its day glow colors and bold compositions-his influences are drawn from 5,000 years of Korean history. "My work is Oriental. I am influenced by Korean Sumi-e brush painting and Eastern philosophies, as well as by my experiences in the West," says the artist.
Lee begins each painting with an underpinning of a linear web. The lines act as a link to another place, bridging spiritual and earthly realms. Next, he layers the temperamental resin mixture with additional layers. The resin dries at various times, depending on the thickness of the paint mixture and how it is applied.
"I have wrestled with this devilish resin for nearly 20 years," says Lee. "After many experiments and many failings, I now know how to negotiate it."
Artist Statement
My artwork is a visualization of man's alienation from his soul in this highly materialistic, technological society.
My paintings are infused with symbolism drawn from 5,000 years of Korean history. In the past, Shamans used several kinds of rope placed around the ceremonial area to communicate with the soul world. The linear elements in my paintings echo the role of the Shaman's ropes. They are a connection between the spirit world and reality. On another level, they represent a connection between people.
My grandmother was a famous Shaman in Korea. During my childhood I was deeply impacted by her performances and felt a strong contact with the spiritual world. This early experience has been an important source of inspiration for my art. Eastern philosophies and Western experiences have deeply influenced my work.
For six years I studied traditional Korean Sumi-e painting, learning from the old masters. Before that time, I had already begun to develop new techniques, experimenting with both oriental and western materials. Using a palette knife, a trowel and other less conventional tools, I have created my own original art form.
Moving to the US has felt like a rebirth for me. I believe many immigrants feel like this when they come to a new country, On one hand, I want to retreat to the familiar, safe, comfortable place of my own history and birth country, akin to returning to the womb. But, at the same time, I want to be reborn, in a sense, to enjoy the freedom and the cultural and political climate of the US.
I hope that my work encourages people to look within themselves and realize the unbelievable power of life and the dormant potential within each of us.

Visitors can reach the peak of Mount Tai via a bus which terminates at the Midway Gate to Heaven, from there a cable car (纜車 缆车 pictured) connects to the summit. Covering the same distance on foot takes about two and a half to six hours. (1)
Each cable car takes 8 passengers. On the way up they forced pack us as sardines to the maximum capacity, but on the way down they let us go loosely and allows me room to do some photography.
The cable cars are completely enclosed, but there is a utility cable car which is open air (pictured first on the right). I would have loved to be able to get on that one as the plexiglass windows on the cable car are scratched due to weather battering and I could have taken some better picture if there is no window between my lens and the scene.

Data is important to me. Some humans commented that I have a lot of tags. If you have no data, sure, you don’t need tags. But if you have 10,000+ media items on Flickr like I do, you tag, you organize, you make sure that everything you do is searchable so that when someone asked you for a photo, you are able to find it under 10 seconds. I can do that. Can you?
1 2
3 4
1. I use Adobe Lightroom, because it has tight integration with the EXIF metadata storage scheme implemented by Flickr.
2. When I enter information in the title / description area of Lightroom, it automatically populates the relevant fields on Flickr. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/
3. When I assign keywords inside Lightroom, they get populated as Flickr tags. Lightroom has an awesome feature which allows you to create synonyms for tags, and is what I currently do for Chinese tags. I am bilingual, Flickr is not. So assigning synonyms inside Lightroom, I tag once but then Flickr shows both Chinese and English on the page. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/
4. The JPEG format stores metadata information in the form of EXIF. Add /meta to the Flickr URL and you see it instantly. JPEG EXIF on Flickr is text only, making it very indexable by search engines. All that info you spend time organizing in Lightroom is reflected automatically. www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/8429087032/meta
Some people said that they have no idea where I find the time to popular these fields. I don’t. Everything is automatic. Things just get smartly embedded everywhere. With a few scripts anything is possible.

I am happy that my first skydiving video had generated enough buzz that has convinced Adam to come and he clearly had fun as well. See his video at YouTube: HiKirsch: Adam S. Kirschner - Skydiver
Last time was awesome, but this time I truly felt it. I still freaked a little when I jumped out of the plane, but it was all exciting shortly after... and for the first time around, I actually did enjoy the view very much.
Skydiving... highly recommended!
SML Skydive video remix
Two months have passed and I still have not had the chance to remix my first video, but with these new footage shot by Laszlo Andacs, I should have enough materials to create my upcoming dance track, Crazy is Good. Stay tuned. For more SML Music, visit smlMusic.com.
SML Thank You
+ Adam S. Kirschner: I would like to thank Adam S. Kirschner for inviting me to go with him on his first skydive! I love people who can work hard and play hard, and as I mentioned in my previous blog post, those are exactly the kind of quality I seek to work with. I am impressed, and I am really glad that Adam had a great time also. I Love ASK! Kudos!
+ Beth Schuman: I would like to thank Beth Schuman for jumpsuit wardrobe assistance. Beth had her first skydive the same day and I am very honored to be her witness as she signed away her life to her tandem instructor.
+ Brad Schwatz: I would like to thank Brad Schwatz for skydiving with us. I am also really glad that I have successfully convinced him to throw close to three hundred bucks to get a video on his first skydive. Brad is a shoe designer, and definitely has an eye for shoes. Fashion fashionistas warning: you have approximately five years to scoop him up before I am ready to build my fashion collection.
+ Denes Gutai: I would like to thank Denes Gutai for being my T2 skydive instructor. Denes is also the U.S. exclusive distributor for Intrudair, a line of quality jumpsuit products from Hungary. I checked out the site last night and those pants are hot! I also find the logo design of Intrudair to be really inspiring. Go check it out at intrudair.hu!
+ Jeff Daniels: I would like to thank Jeff Daniels for skydiving with Brad.
+ Laszlo Andacs: I would like to thank Lazslo Andacs for shooting and editing the wonderful video above. Originally I was expecting this video to be similar to the first one shot by Oren Peri, as such I am very impressed to see the diversity in creativity in not just how the same subject can be explored, but also in terms of style and perspective. Very well done!

+ Marcos (SML Data: no last name data unavailable): Thank you for being Adam's T1 skydive instructor.

Some captures are so challenging to attempt to process in Lightroom I would not even bother to try and I would open it as smart object in Photoshop to process immediately.
The light (sun) is coming directly behind the front gate of the 天街 (“Heavenly Street”), but what I is obviously to show the writing on the gate. In the past it was very challenging because it used to mean having to either do some insane masking (which I generally prefer not to) or letting the sky blow out (which is less ideal but doable). These days H+S (Highlight and Shadow) is the perfect tool for it.
For this particular photo, a fairly heavy handed H+S is applied—see screenshot of particular settings at cl.ly/image/0a081L383e2q I don’t generally recommend pushing tonal width to the max for most photos, but often for extreme cases such as this one it is useful.
Usually if anything is eventually going to print I try to do everything else in Photoshop also but since this one is just intended for Flickr (for now) I imported into Lightroom and tweaked to satisfaction. Mostly I tweaked the sharpening with some heavy masking (hold down “option” to view black+white is a good way to see what you are actually adjusting). Backlit objects usually have fairly severe chromatic aberration so a very heavy-handed chromatic aberration is applied also—normally I don’t do this but like I said, this is an unusual circumstance. Screenshot here: cl.ly/image/3P3F12253L3l Also note in the screenshot that when I work with sky I generally turn on the white point “triangle” so it would show me which areas are blown out. It is easier to work with using Curves in Photoshop so if I eventually decide to print anything I usually rework them but again for Flickr for now it is good enough.
I might eventually turn this into black and white but I did how the clothes that the people are wearing matches the sun glow (yellow) and the cold shadow color (blue) so I picked this capture to process instead of another shot without humans in it.
