37 Palm Beach (Qld) SLSC training Indonesians in surf reel and belt, Kuta Beach, Bali, Indonesia. September 1977
John (Spider) McPherson and Mark (Coco) Crampton with their morning and afternoon squads of trainees and a few others were asked to pose for the camera. Franz Henrick in yellow shirt was an Indonesian lifesaver going for his Instructors Certificate and so he was training the afternoon squad with Coco and I. Franz was a reserved, very competent lifesaver. He kept his own counsel but knew what he was doing. Franz gained his Instructors Certificate with ease.
When asked to pose for the photograph with our squads I was immediately pushed into a position of discomfort. Since most of the trainees only reached my shoulder I crouched down to avoid appearing like a giraffe. This created another problem however. Being intimately close to a man was foreign to my experience and my nation's culture. For the Indonesians though nothing was more natural than to embrace a friend. With the camera pointed at us one of the men put his arms around my neck and clung on tight. When in Rome do as the Romans do. I put my arm around him and told myself to relax as I would not die by hugging him in return -- and I did not. Bali destroyed so many silly Australian inhibitions that I feel indebted to the affectionate Indonesian men with whom we worked.

Jensen was too quick for Mark (Coco) Crampton. Jensen, the man in blue stripes, was not an ethnic Balinese. He owned a fabric and garment shop in Denpasar and many of the peddlers on the streets and beach were his commission sales people. Over the door of his warehouse was a Christian cross and the motto "In God weWe Trust". Whether this was his personal conviction or a repetition of the motto on the US dollar I do not know. Whatever, Jensen was a decent man who through his business supported many families with an income. While laughing with him in his warehouse we were shouted to silence by an Australian businessman whose partner had marooned him sans finance in Bali. They were debating hotly over the phone and it seemed our good humour diminished the man's ability to negotiate. Having heard the man's language and sentiments I would have happily parted company with him myself, so I did not think poorly of the distant ex-partner. We were in Jensen's warehouse and Jensen took the rebuke silently, and so we followed suit. Under different circumstances we might not have.

Another nonmilitary type occupying the front seats was a gentleman in a grey outfit. I think I recall that the gentleman was the Deputy Governor of Bali but I may be mistaken. Gil Graham presented the gent with a history of Australian lifesaving, printed in English. Doubtless the gesture was appreciated even if the book was incomprehensible.

The man to Gil Graham's right was the interpreter of Gil's speech. First Gil spoke, and when finished he sat. The interpreter then translated the entire speech to the audience. The speech was well received, with even a flicker of approval on the general's faces. My Indonesian may have been poor but I understood enough to know that the man was not translating Gil's speech, but had delivered the speech that he thought Gil should have made. I turned to Gil and in a whisper congratulated him on his eloquence. Gil, who understood that his words were being very loosely paraphrased, fought hard not to laugh.

Gil Graham made a speech thanking Waja SLSC for its hospitality and the assembled officials for their support. His oratory was incomprehensible to most as the gentleman on the left did not even bother translating. Gil's left hand is bandaged and so is his ankle. He had parted company with his motorcycle on a patch of gravel and sustained a number of superficial injuries. The injuries themselves were nothing to be concerned about but the subsequent infections took over a year to properly clear up. Like most places tropical Bali was full of antagonistic microorganisms. All of our team suffered from mild dysentery (courtesy of ice cubes made from polluted water).
