Slinking through the curves at Sully Springs as it grinds upgrade, this BNSF coal train is most nearly the only thing around in this isolated part of the North Dakota Badlands. Living a mere 75 miles away, I frequent this location nearly monthly now, and no matter how many times I visit, I always want to come back. On a separate note, while I was here last, BNSF crews were performing signal work. It appears that the days of the three color aspect signals in Sully Springs are numbered. Vader signals are already in place and being wired in.

CCET 5857, a B36-7 from the TTI and before that the Seaboard System, heads up a short train coming into Sardinia, Ohio. I had come to this place not for the trains nor even the signals, instead to acquire detail photos of RoadRailer CouplerMate bogies that had sat here since 2015 - and were still here in summer '24 as per Google streetview imagery - but alas all remnants of them had been carted off before my arrival. It was purely unplanned dumb luck I happened across a train at all here, much less an elusive B36-7. My understanding is this unit does not often lead trains here, so while my luck had run out a bit, I got some of it back suffice to say.

Former Norfolk & Western signals stand tall here despite being tarped over. This line was formerly the N&W's "Peavine" or the Cincinnati District. Portions of the Peavine were railbanked in the early 2000s, while today a chunk of it remains in service with the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad. While I was there, this train rolled in decidedly slow, cut off its cars at the switch, and went to pick up a locomotive in the Sardinia "yard" before slowly slipping out of town once reconnected. They were quite slow in moving around here, which was pretty handy for snagging some shots. That old GE chug was a real delight, too!
