I took this from my hotel in Launceston, Tasmania last night. I'd noticed the thin slither of a moon earlier in the evening, and when I later looked out the window I saw it was setting near the clock tower.

I think it's amazing that the clock and moon appear the same size at this focal length. Also the edge of the moon that is lit up is facing the clock. Not to mention the tree just appearing in front of the moon to add some more interest.

My tripod was in the boot of my car, so I had to improvised by pushing the camera hard into the window that was open just enough to fit my lens through. I took a few shots and only about a quarter of them turned out, the rest had motion blur.

A memorable dawn up in Northumberland, where the sky was incredible and the footing was impossible!

These dolerite boulders are the best form of defence I've ever encountered. They are just like bowling balls covered in fairy liquid, you fear for your safety and that of your gear with every centimetre gained! Once you have slithered to a spot, in the half light pre dawn, you really need your wits about you in securing any sort of safe anchorage from which to try a shot with a camera.

Anyway the effort was well rewarded as the sky started to show its early light. The intense reds and yellows were just fabulous to behold. I was actually amazed that I was the only person out in such marvellous conditions, or mad enough to be out at such an hour!

I've seen a few of these over the years but only a fleeting glimpse as they are very fast and normally slither away before you can even raise your camera. This guy seemed the same when all of a sudden he raised his head up and sat there and actually posed.

The Kansas City to Oakland Forwarder slithers along the upper Arkansas River on the way to crossing the Continental Divide over Tennessee Pass. Four Tunnel Motors, two each Rio Grande and Southern Pacific, with a Santa Fe SD45 rounding out the consist.

I apologise to those people who are sick of seeing poppy images, but I'm afraid my processing and uploading is pretty random in terms of dates, so here's another shot of the Shepshed poppies from early July. I was aware at the time that many photographers would have been out making images of these fields, so from my two visits I was determined to try to make something that was different, yet not too crazily avant garde that it did not represent my photographic style. I liked the way these poppies were illuminated by the morning sun, yet the background field perimeter was in strong shadow.

For Monochrome Monday here's another take on this railroad train focusing on the train instead of the power. There's just something fascinating about watching these and seeing someone that we perceive as so immovable and rigid to flex like so much cooked spaghetti....ah the wonders of physics and chemistry.

Looking down off rhe US Route 1 overpass above CPF 199, a CSXT/Pan Am Rigby yard crew is pulling a loaded welded rail train out of track 6 at the east end of Rigby Yard. The train had arrived here after coming up on M426 from Worcester and would continue east on the rear of that manifest to Waterville the next morning. It is ultimately destined for the track upgrades going on between Northern Maine Junction and Mattawamkeag as CSXT rebuilds the old Maine Central mainline they purchased last year.

Needing to turn the train to orient it properly for unloading they ran a couple miles east up District 1 to CPF 197 where they pulled down the Yard 8 lead. They then shoved back out the mainline through the crossovers at CPF 196 and brought the train back here.

A Matter Of How You See It

Another image from our recent trip to the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. This shot was taken as the Storm Clouds moved in and partly obscured the setting Sun but still leaving a slither of Golden light cascading across the landscape and signalling the end to another day on this stunning Island of Dreams
