Mount Sopris, Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA

On a frosty, clear evening the first full moon of 2017 floated over the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies, a giant orb, brilliant orange against the lingering purples of the sky. I spotted this from my kitchen window, so lucky that the moonrise was exactly in a clear space between the trees on the edge of our meadow. No time or room for a tripod, so I balanced my big lens on a towel laid over the sink faucet to keep it steady.

"All of the year's full moons have names, which were given to them by Native American tribes living in the eastern and northern United States. January's full moon is known primarily as the "Wolf Moon," according to the Farmers' Almanac: 'Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. Thus, the name for January’s full moon.' " (SPACE.com)

I had hoped to see some noctilucent clouds, they didn’t appear, had to be content with this wonderful sunset skyscape

SKYSCAPE

Great skies on Oct. 5th, from an hour before sunrise to 2 hours after I captured some amazing stuff. ;)

Flying into bright & colourful future........ HOPES! (p/p)

I had gone to the roof simply to experiment with manually setting various white balances.

Luckily, there were clouds.

What prompted the experiment was stumbling across a Sean Tucker youtube video about white balance, and how he keeps his white balance in-camera set at 5500K (or 5600—he wasn't quite sure), as that is mid-day, daylight Kelvin temp. He doesn't use auto white balance. He also doesn't change his WB. His reasons, for his type of shooting, make sense.

I've discovered that Lightroom Classic doesn't exactly interpret the Kelvin setting that had been chosen in-camera.

Choosing 7100K in-camera, as for this photo, shows up as 8000 in the Temperature slider field in the Basic panel of LrC. But that's okay as long as the image looks right. I'll just keep this in mind.

I've also discovered that the closer the in-camera setting is to 5600K, the closer the Temp value in LrC will match.

LrC won't show me the camera value like it would for aperture or shutter speed. I have to look at the LCD on the camera to see what I'd set for the white balance and then look at the computer for what LrC shows as the Temp value.

Because I shoot raw, the white balance can always be amended during post processing. Shooting with auto white balance will probably allow achieving better color separation in post. But, I'd heard that manually setting WB can be good for effect.

This same scene, shot in AWB showed up as 5200 in the Temp slider field. The yellows were very wan, while the blues were very saturated. And that's not how this sky looked in reality.

Manually setting the WB to 5600 in-camera showed up as 5700 in the LrC Temp slider field. The yellows were a bit more bold.

But shooting with the WB set to 7100 in-camera got the result that was easiest to work with during post processing, for how this really looked at the time, and for how I felt when looking at this sky.

Made this as a stitch of two frames one on top of the other, taken from my drone while it hovered abut 10 metres above the sea adjoining Bombo's latite quarry. The cloud structure was the primary target for this image, but the basaltic columns are a nice shoreline feature too.

This image was taken at Baker Beach . Thank for your visiting ! Hope you have a wonderful weekend !

i went for a drive in the country searching for a nice landscape and found this stellar hill instead.

the perfect spot to put my camera on the ground, set the timer and ponder the clouds.

HMAM!

Remains of a large storm passing through our area

This is a look east towards Death Valley from Sierra View Vista point on the way into the Schulman Grove at the Ancient bristlecone forest. This was another one of those situations were I was shooting into the sun to the west of the Sierra Nevada range and noticed a pink glow on the ground and bushes. I checked behind me to see these streaking clouds stretched out up above so I scrambled through the brush to find one bush out by itself and found this one. I set up and captured it. :)

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my photos, and as always, your views, comments, faves, and support are greatly appreciated!! Have a great week ahead my friends!! :)
