Several of these butterflies were flying around close to the gravel road I was on and stopping to sip on something on the road. They would stay for several minutes and then leave, then return. By sipping moisture from mud puddles, butterflies take in salts and minerals from the soil in this case the road. The butterfly had been thru hard times with badly tattered wings.
Papilio palamedes, the Palamedes swallowtail or laurel swallowtail, is a North American butterfly in the family Papilionidae.
The wingspan ranges from 4 1⁄2 to 5 1⁄8 inches.
This species may be found in habitats such as cypress swamplands, coastal swamplands, wet riparian forests, bay forests, and savannas.
The Palamedes swallowtail is encountered from May to October in southeastern Virginia and from March to December in more southern regions. In Mexico it is represented by subspecies P. p. leontis.
Males seek females by patrolling near forest edges and forest openings. In courtship, the male and female will fly about a foot apart, slowly flying together in unison. The male will then fly above and behind the female to disperse his pheromones and he will continue to do this until the female decides to mate with him. - Wikipedia
Tiny European paper wasp visiting my birdbath.
Common during a hot afternoon. This species has rapidly become established across the lower part of Michigan. Nests may be found in almost any protected situation, even wheel wells of vehicles. There is some indication that this species has outcompeted our native Polistes in suburban habitats.
I've been chasing this Bumbles to get a BIF shot, but not this time. I'll settle for his beautiful wing display
There is quite a bit of activity at the backyard butterfly bushes lately, as many species of bees, butterflies, and other insects stop by to drink the sweet nectar. This is a Snowberry Clearwing moth sipping nectar from a butterfly bush flower. The black legs indicate that this is a Snowberry Clearwing rather than the very similar Hummingbird Clearwing. Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja)
This is a youngster as he still has those soft, pink hues across the entire wing and his head is still covered with feathers.

Spinning is not my cup of tea. I'm sure to get sick on these types of rides, so I just stick to photographing them.
I stood through 3 rides and took about 40 frames. I caught a few shots with people's flashes going off but thought this one was the best because of the combination of swirling colors.

With the arrival of summer, the butterflies have been showing up to check out our Lantana. But summer has also brought its share of sweltering temperatures, which makes going outside to grab shots of those butterflies rather challenging.
I managed to brave the heat a few weeks ago, and got lucky when this Gulf Fritillary arrived and started taking quite a few long sips from various blooms. It's willingness to 'pose' allowed me to grab a few shots before I started to wilt like those Lantana leaves.
I'm thinking it may be time to get back out there again, and see who else shows up - before I start to wilt again. LOL!
A Cabbage White butterfly on the Caryopteris Blue Mist shrub which we planted specifically for some late summer/early fall color in the garden.
The orange light and shallow depth of field makes it appear, at least to me, that the water around this hen wood duck is on fire. Hence the title fire sipper! I also like how the hen is sipping and looking dead-on at me, a potential threat. View large for best experience.
Thanks for putting up with all my wood duck shots. It was a rare experience for me to get these animals in so close.
Happy Easter!
dandelions sip rainwater
this, i found very interesting through her light ... like fibre optic or LED. The stem remained well straight ... despite heavy rainfall. As a result, it emanates from him strong impression
