Exploring the Alaskan forest is an adventure that never fails to captivate me. I remain vigilant, fully aware that the wildlife around me might be watching. One unforgettable morning, I experienced a remarkable connection with nature when I caught sight of a lynx nestled among the spruce and willows, its eyes keenly focused on me. For a brief moment, I spoke softly to this magnificent creature, acknowledging our shared space, before I continued on my journey, allowing it to return peacefully to its rest. Each encounter in this wild landscape deepens my appreciation for the beauty and mystery of nature.
So this year i turn 30. And i wanted to do the biggest personal piece to date. She's 25 feet long.
Winter wonderland.

Niagara Falls' afternoon road switcher L035 performs an interplant move at Van De Mark Chemical in Lockport, NY shuffling the order of tank cars inside as requested by the customer.
Things are not the same as when I first started shooting this place four years ago. In this shot, the crew is swapping the order of cars to set themselves up for success on their next trip out. The car they are handling was spotted as a fresh load the previous week, and the car to the left has been in-plant for many weeks already, partially empty but not yet ready to pull. Making this move facilitates an easy pull for the crew once the outer car is finally released. Makes for good shots in and and around the plant, but that's about it. The two mile journey to switch the customer off of the mainline is otherwise light power both directions on days like these. It didn't used to be this way...
Van De Mark is arguably my most shot customer in Western New York. It's a place I simply never tire of shooting for whatever reason. Over the last four years, just when I think I've run out I find new angles to try, and get a little bit ballsier with each one. Thankfully the workers here are friendly people, they've certainly seen a lot of me in that time. Located on a switchback coming off of the now mostly abandoned Somerset Railroad, I consider this region the most scenic 2.6 miles of railroad this state has to offer. There's plenty of other overlooks in the state which would easily win that title, but for my money this area is it. With the shutdown of the coal-fired Kintigh Generating Station in Somerset, NY in 2019, the majority of the branch which starts in Lockport at CP PORT was filed for abandonment in 2020, finally ripped out privately in 2022 following a limited number of scrap runs up to Somerset on the part of CSX in 2021. The line now ends at QDK 2.6, four tenths of a mile north of the switchback switch, known as Mill St, at QDK 2.2. On the suggestion of one of my CSX friends, the private holding company who owns the right of way left in the extra stretch after the switch, in case of switching maneuvers requiring a gravity drop. The first couple miles of the Somerset features turned New York Central searchlights at PORT, an S curve, a road crossing in a valley, more curves, the Gulf Bridge above the valley floor, a downhill slope through the man-made rock cut where track was laid in the 1980s, and the switchback itself which climbs the hillside before descending back down grade to Mill St. The industry is merely the cherry on top, with its pseudo street running leading into the plant. Next door to Van De Mark another chemical customer Twin Lakes used to take cars, but has not been a CSX customer for what I've been told is a couple decades. Prior to the Somerset and switchback being installed on the west side of Mill St, Lowertown Lockport as it's referred to was accessed via real street running from the east side down Mill St, dating back into the New York Central and early Conrail days. This method was abandoned with the advent of Somerset. If any of this is hard to visualize, just go look at it on Google Maps, it'll make a lot more sense. Eventually I'll upload more shots of every nook and cranny I've shot. Until then, the rest of the story goes like this.
When I first started shooting here, my first daylight shots coming on April Fools Day 2021, activity was a lot more lively. Well, that's because the space inside Van De Mark was shared by a second customer, fittingly also starting with the same first three letters. A company by the name of Vanchlor down in the valley underneath the Gulf Bridge received their own tank cars in the plant on Mill St, either trucking it the short distance around the corner, or to my surprise even piping through the grade separations. Walking out to the Gulf Bridge once in 2022, I found pipes embedded within the hillside. I didn't put it together at the time that that's what those were for, but it makes sense knowing what I do now. With both customers sharing space, switching here was usually once a week, rarely twice but it did happen a handful of times. A third track inside the plant housed the Vanchlor cars all on the left side, while Van De Mark has always kept their own on the far right. In summer of 2024, Vanchlor decided to exit the rail business, opting to ship their chemical over from Germany which somehow some way is saving them on costs. Perhaps in the modern tariff state of the U.S. that might not be the case anymore, but they haven't expressed any interest in returning to rail otherwise. What I never realized was that it was Vanchlor carrying the bulk of the switching here rather than Van De Mark itself. As a result, the once a week/every other at its lowest I was used to was now dropping to once or twice a month. At times during the summer of 2025, it was indeed once a month this year. Standard procedure for the crew when they have cars to deliver is to tie the inbounds down at PORT, always on the rear of the train as hazardous cars, go drop their interchange train for the Falls Raod Railroad, then either bring their outbound train back to the PORT switch to have it in place already, or leave the yard light power and return back to the inbounds for Van De Mark after locking up the PORT switch. If they came back light power, any pulls from Van De Mark would be shoved back from Mill St to the Lockport Branch main before pulling back onto the Falls Road. If they brought their outbound train up to the PORT switch already, thelat either meant no pulls at Van De Mark, or the highly sought after but almost always after dark gravity drop move, which would make a for a more desirable westbound shot on the Gulf Bridge into the evening light. Any gravity drop move I witnessed always resulted in light running out before they could get back on the move towards PORT. Alternatively and lesser, the crew could drop their whole train at PORT and head up to Mill St light power in the case of pull only, which has now become the norm two out of three times the have work there. I even had a heads up or two over the radio that they were headed straight there back in 2021. Granted they were dealing with plenty more cars at that time. Now it's two at the most. Whereas before Vanchlor left the probability of playing and pulling cars, now it's only one or the other and not both. On the bright side, a day where they have a pull or are performing an interplant, they go up to Mill St first thing upon arriving in Lockport. This is great for lighting purposes, but one out of three moves are now guaranteed to be light power both directions on the Somerset, which isn't nearly as cool as having a car with them. Placing a car is now the worst thing to shoot since they do it after dropping in the Falls Road yard, usually a half hour to 45 minute move depending on how big the inbound train is. During peak summer daylight, that's fine, but once the sunset gets too short, the light power trip up is the best case scenario.
Van De Mark locally sources their cars out of the Olin Chlor-alkali Corp in Niagara Falls, so the only heads up for days they're going to be switched is listening to the EC-1 issued to the crew when they call to depart, since the Lockport Branch and Somerset are both dark territory. The switch or switches they wish to operate must be listed on the form, making things easy so long as you're able to hear their conversation and live within 40 minutes of Lockport since that's the exact travel time from CP 25 to PORT for L035. I shot as many of these moves as I could this summer, as the idea of Van De Mark leaving CSX, or CSX abandoning them rather, is not too far fetched. Having to maintain the Gulf Bridge especially for a once a month customer is not likely in CSX's long term plan financially, which is the only reason the little stub of the Somerset Railroad still exists. If Van De Mark quits, it's game over for this trackage. Not the fate I or anyone around here wants to see, but current trends suggest it may be their fate somewhere down the road. If the day when the final pull should arrive, you can count on me to be on scene day or night.
this thing has been the plague of my life since I bought it ... I never knew where to put it - but I think it's found its home!
A lifetime of friendship
Once lovers
Both travelling the road to freedom
For truth – two kindred spirits
Knowing, without question – this connection
There was a thirst for knowledge
We became the teacher and the student to one another
Driven by the desires of sexual pleasure
A strong magnetic pull
Aware of his thought forms in all its intoxications – no matter how far he was from me
Addicted to his presence
Destruction, dismantling of the ego
We held the mirror to one another
We each had valuable lessons to learn from one another
This was only possible once we reached the point of no return
Karma was a bitch at times – that was not my intention
Many years separated us by choice
Only to rekindle our lives together this past 15 years
This time on solid ground
With a higher understanding
Validation and forgiveness
Opening of hearts
Without the need for one another
Acceptance of what is
Great beauty emerged from this
Two hearts that felt deeply
Without the need for physical expression
Just to be cradled in each other’s arms was enough
A higher love so few experience in a lifetime
Rising above the desires of the physical bodies
To higher states of being
Being in each other’s presence
It was enough
How far we had come as individuals
Two minds, two hearts connected once more
On higher realms than before
What magic unfolded in this realization
We were meant to be free
No longer tied to by the physical pull of our desires
What emerged was a greater respect
A greater love
To love and let each other go
For we both knew the road required a solo ride
We had different paths to follow
The gift to emerge was our friendship and love strengthened
But without the need or desire for anything at all
Accept to love and be free to pursue the souls journey
Many miles had separated us in the past 5 years
With plans to reconnect when borders open
God had other plans for you
I sobbed with tears of joy and elation – you had finally found GOD
You gave your soul to God that fine day through the ritual of baptism
Two days before your sudden death
No greater blessing for me than to know this was the end for you
God always works in mysterious ways
I had always loved you from the moment we met
A journey that was fraught with adventure for our soul’s journey
You have ridden the biggest wave of all in the ocean of life
Thank you for the journey of a lifetime
A journey so filled with blessings
I will miss our long and lofty conversations into the wee hours of the morning
They say your life partner should be someone you can talk to about anything
Best friends who never shy away from speaking their truth
Sharing the most intimate of dreams, desires, experiences
I found this in you my friend
I was looking forward to once more being cradled in your arms
Talking about life and all that is good and bad in this world
Catching up on all the adventures in between our last phone call
Sharing space with you if only for a moment in time once more
Eating ice cream with you once more
Solving the problems of the world and praying for a peaceful world
I really thought I would see you this year
Visions of adventures when you came to stay
Those long lofty conversations
Until it was time for you for your next destination
I never expected your next destination was heaven
Your journey was not always easy
But the journey of a true warrior is never easy
We knew this truth
Until we meet again
I will cry a little more and my heart will feel heavy
But I know at the higher level
You are in a better place
I pray there are wild surfs for you to ride those waves
I hope you get to meet my beloved in heaven
I pray he was there to meet you
He would want to thank you for loving me
Until we meet again
What a glorious reunion it will be on high
Rest in Peace my beautiful friend in Gods Eternal Peace
Pittsburgh sprang up because of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers connecting to form the Ohio River. The heart of downtown, bounded by the rivers, is called "The Golden Triangle." And there are lots of little triangles within it. That's because Pittsburgh's street grid runs parallel and perpendicular to both rivers. Eventually these two grids must crash into each other, and the place where that happens is Liberty Avenue.
Here at the "corner" of Liberty, Wood Street and Sixth Avenue, a little triangle of real estate is formed by the odd intersection. A building popped up to fill that space. Originally, it was used as a bank. In the 1980's the building got quite a facelift when Pittsburgh's "T" Subway System was built. From the ground floor, commuters access the escalators and stairs down to the platforms below.
Above them, the trendy Wood Street Galleries host some of the hoitiest and toitiest of art displays to be found anywhere. There is also shared space for artists to work in. I bet they paint lots of funny angles.
The building is a project of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
There is something so innately pleasing about standing in forest sharing space with wild animals like her.

- There is some debate over when MG started. The company itself stated it to be 1924, although the first cars bore both Morris and MG badges and a reference to MG with the octagon badge appears in an Oxford newspaper from November 1923. Others dispute this and believe that MG only properly began trading in 1925.
- The first cars which were rebodied Morris models using coachwork from Carbodies of Coventry and were built in premises in Alfred Lane, Oxford but demand soon caused a move to larger premises in Bainton Road in September 1925 sharing space with the Morris radiator works. Continuing expansion meant another move in 1927 to a separate factory in Edmund Road, Cowley, Oxford, near the main Morris factory and for the first time it was possible to include a production line. In 1928 the company had become large enough to warrant an identity separate from the original Morris Garages and the M.G. Car Company Limited was established in March of that year and in October for the first time a stand was taken at the London Motor Show. Space again soon ran out and a search for a permanent home led to the lease of part an old leather factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire in 1929, gradually taking over more space until production ended there in 1980.
- Originally owned personally by William Morris, the company was sold to Morris Motors (itself part of the Nuffield Organisation) in 1935. MG was absorbed into the British Motor Corporation in 1952, and latterly British Leyland (BL) in 1968. Under BMC, several MG models were no more than badge-engineered versions of other marques, with the main exception being the small MG sports cars.
- The MGB, designed by Pininfarina, was released in 1962 to satisfy demand for a more modern and comfortable sports cars. In 1965 the Fixed Head Coupé (FHC) Mark I followed : the MGB GT.
We travel with no fixed direction, to places to be determined
Let the footsteps of those who gave us dreams
We share space in a chaotic way, drifting
and although we're surrounded by people we can not avoid feeling alone (108)

Shot with Olivia a bunch of times over a two year stretch, never really figured out what Olivia was into modeling for. She did it for a few years, then went on to, if I remember correctly, go get a master's degree in some history-related subject.
Seems it was just a way to have fun, for her...which, I get that. I get that very much.
And we did have ourselves a good time, over the years. Lost touch once she left town...I had a partner on the ambulance for a year. We spent about 14 hours together every day, four days a week. Saw him more than my family, more than anyone I dated. We had adventures, saved some lives together, were there when people passed away...tight bond, you do all that with a person.
And then he left, on to bigger and better things. We kept in touch...but it was the work that created that bond. It was the work that gave us a shared space, so yep, over time we talked less and less. I still get holiday cards, but that's about it.
It's an old story, it's a situational friendship. That's what I had with him, that's what I had with Olivia.
So I think, nowadays, not of the fact that the friendship faded, but of the time we had. Olivia and I made pictures I truly love, we had fun making those pictures, what else matters?

I've seen a few folks doing this - usually young lads though, not normally adults, cycling with no hands on the handlebars. Impressive they can stay upright like that, but I question the wisdom of it, especially when cycling around pedestrians on a shared space with walkers, if he hits a bump he didn't see or a walker steps in a way he didn't anticipate, he can't steer or hit the brakes effectively. This chap seemed to be managing fine though, but not how I'd ride!

This time of year I tend to drift back in time and find my feet down on Main Street as singer and song writer Bob Seger would say. There is a certain fascinating relationship between old buildings in urban settings and the raking side lighting that is common at this time of year when the sun is at a low angle in the sky. Skies are incredibly blue and a high contrast situation exists that I find very pleasing. People in urban settings are used to sharing space unlike the rural areas where a get off of my property attitude often prevails. Yesterday as I was propping myself up with an old tow truck to steady my Nikon to take pictures of an old grungy back alley area in the warehouse district the owner of the truck came out of his abandoned looking shack to inquire what I was doing laying across his vehicle. Ellis McGowan is eighty nine years old and has been towing vehicles for the last forty three of them. As we exchanged information about each other I began to realize that Ellis himself was far more interesting than anything I could aim my camera at. He took out his wallet and showed me an old copy of his wedding picture from 1950 and yes, he has only been married once. Also shown were pictures of his three small dogs that ride with him everywhere he goes. A picture of Ellis in his baby blue ‘58 Cadillac convertible was the real topper. An hour later Mr. McGowan got a call for a tow and had to leave. The pleasure of his company was truly appreciated. Photography for me is a way of life. It is something that can be used to reach out to others and make us just that much more human and humane. It deals with objective realities, enabling you to get out of your own head for awhile and be involved with things outside of yourself. I would never want to be without a camera. It frees by enabling to see. Cheers everyone.

'SHARED SPACE.'
An image made five and a half years ago when the world was a different place.
A stunning Brown Hare, hunkered down just three metres away, sharing it's space with me.
A time when I took the freedom to travel and roam in wonderful places like Havergate Island for granted.

Early in 2024, the Realm of Ihrydia was born. A quarter of a sim showcasing fragments of our imagination, little did we know that this home of ours would be visited by people from all over the grid.
Ever since then, Duplexity has grown, more than I expected, and that is thanks to your outstanding support.
So we have decided to move Ihrydia from its original location to its own region that will share space with the store.
This is coming very soon, we're just finishing some small details. Some of you who took a look and purchased my latest release have already been to the new location.
We have some fun things planned for it, such as giveaways, hunts, and photo contests.
We hope to see you there soon! -Kal

On a walk around Welles Street in Christchurch. November 2019 New Zealand.
One of the most exciting new developments to open in Christchurch in 2019, The Welder is a unique health and wellbeing centre in stunningly repurposed buildings in the heart of South Town. The history and soul of the old industrial buildings is palpable as soon as you step inside the space, and it provides an experience unlike anything else in the city.
Dotted around a shared indoor courtyard filled with greenery and natural light, you’ll find hole-in-the-wall spots where you can pick up a coffee, a cold-pressed juice, some serious sourdough, a beautiful pastry, tapas and a glass of wine, Japanese yakitori barbeque and more. Find a cosy nook within one of these establishments, spread out on a comfy lounger or head outside to the courtyard. The shared space invites you to find your own favourite place within The Welder.
