During the COVID-19 situation, Bellingham High School has become a rather fancy homeless shelter. Fancier than previous homeless shelters in Bellingham.
I'm sure it's still a hardship to be homeless, however. Having one's own space is a blessing. This is still shared space, but quite something to have a big fancy high school as a homeless shelter.
With schools closed and the need to maintain space between people for preventing virus spread in the community, this has come about. The large gyms are being used for sleeping and the fancy cafeteria / entrance (pictures here) is a day use, drop in headquarters.
Even if one lives in a gated community, surrounded by wealth, one can still be affected by the conditions faced by less fortunate folks in society. This virus can spread widely across the entire community.
A good use for the school since it isn't in normal use anyway. Students are said to be learning online.
Shelter will soon be moving down the street to the old this empty storefront.
The other three high schools in Bellingham are mostly idle as well, tho I read that they are distributing food and services to students. They aren't totally idle.
The main town centre seems to be layed out in a shared space format with buses cars etc sharing much of the same area with pedestrians and bicycles. Differing colours in the layout show the route for motor vehicles, as in Southend-On-Sea.

Where we lie in this latitude, the early days of autumn share space with summer. Depending on direction, I might end up where it's all still green, and the radiating heat brings out scattered mosquitoes. It's clear that heatwave weather is long lost now, but the chill of fall feels far away. The inversion is coming quick now, those headlong weeks where everything pulls apart and blows away. It's the time I always want to be endless, the cartwheeling weather of a world getting ready to sleep. Steady on seasons, when I'm going full tilt and taking it all in easy. This whole time feels like the rush of blood in your ears, when you shift your jaw for the altitude shift. I might stay at the same level, but each successive day rushes in like an expedition. Whichever adventure you want, come and claim it. There's less light every day, but that slowly drawing darkness makes me happier all the time.

I've posted photos of the big wheels in Nottingham, Derby and London, so I had to do one for Sheffield too. Here it is sharing space with the town hall and another of those old fashioned red telephone boxes. Taken from Leopold Street.

“Lo-Lux”: This project explores the possibility of combining low-income housing with luxury housing in one tower by giving these two types of housing a different interpretation in public space - in both domestic and the shared space of the tower.
In modern context, “luxury” equals to “privatize”. Luxury apartments tend to privatize everything to guarantee the least amount of disturbance from others, therefore we have luxury apartments with private swimming pool at the balcony, private gym and home theatre within the housing unit. In this case, luxury apartments are located at the half of the tower which adjacent to High Line in this project. These units have the view of High line, larger unit space and standard layout.
Low-income housing is usually featured with shared space because that’s the more efficient way to distribute space as a resource. Communal kitchen or restrooms are designed for social housing at the beginning. The idea of the Pilotis from Le Corbusier was also aiming at freeing the ground floor space for public use. However, with the development of virtual communication tools, people tend to stay at home to communicate with others virtually, rather than going out physically. Now, the public/shared space for housing needs to be subdivided and scattered.

The young and the old share space in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center. Two year old Lilly often comes to work with her grandma, Lena. She's not allowed to help dispense meds to the folks in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center, so she spends her time sketching portraits. Hazel, one of our oldest residents, has become her best friend and loves to watch over her shoulder.
