The first lily of the summer. Bought as a single stem several years back, this lily plant has now multiplied into six through its own effort without human intervention. Perhaps I should split it this year or try to harvest some of the seed pods. For those interested, instructions are enclosed in link below. No. 6 of Colour Palette series.

Many insects including butterflies have been suffering because of air pollutants, and by extension we also we suffer this effect. We will be in big trouble without the pollinators that distribute the polen to plants to form seeds and fruit.

If you want to know more about butterflies, how to help them, and more interesting stuff, visit this site is very good:

This a Fritillary butterfly, another one that was left behind, this time from 2013. Right here in PA some butterflies have started to fly around, but the parks and recreation areas will have more of them around may, so next month I will packing my camera bag for the butterfly season!

Photography is my passion, and nature photography is my favorite.

I have been in Explore for more that a hundred times, and it is an awesome experience to have your photos showcased in such a special way.

I'm in many groups, and I only add my photos to them if they are not private.

I thank your for coming today, for leaving a comment, and make a favorite of yours this photo, (if that is the case) thanks again!

The best part of this forum is the contacts and friends that I have made over the years, that have the same passion for this art that is called photography!

"Sycamore seed balls, when washed and dried, make a versatile all-natural craft material. Dye the seed balls with food coloring or nontoxic tempera paint and hang them from ribbons to make holiday ornaments. To make a holiday wreath, twist a chenille stem into a ring and use quick-dry tacky glue to attach sycamore balls around the circle. Hang the wreath from a ribbon when it is dry."

Zinnia x hybrida. La Ceja, Colombia.

Zinnia x hybrida cultivars are a cross between Zinnia elegans and Zinnia angustifolia. They have the short, compact size and profuse flowering of the former and the disease resistance of the latter. Flowers average between 2 and 3 inches in diameter.

Zinnia x hybrida is considered a dwarf group -- they have been bred to be much shorter and bushier than the species plants.

What Is the Difference Between a Cardoon and an Artichoke?

Kilmacduagh abbey ruins, taken in the very early morning, near Gort, county Galway, Ireland. The round tower is famous for its slight lean, drawing comparisons to the tower in Pisa, the selfie crowd posing as "holding back" the tower hasn't arrived yet, but it's only a matter of time before they do.

And oh about the selfie crowd, I saw this interesting article about yet another bunch of brainless instagram victims:

Whether you want to dabble with developing your own special strain of zinnias or simply save money at seed-buying time, saving viable seeds from the zinnia plants in your garden is quick and easy. Today’s zinnias are descended from Zinnia elegans, native zinnias found in Mexico and the southern United States. Heirloom seeds, sometimes called heritage seeds, produce offspring true to parent plants -- the flowers you grow from heirloom seeds are similar. Hybrids revert to the lineages that were crossbred during the development of the hybrid variety, and planting seeds from these flowers results in a wide range of flower types.

It was next day after full moon at Crissy field to chase the moonset moment. I have seen someone took the shot of the airplane with the moon before but I haven't get such chance ;). This was a very lucky moment that I took a shot of a pelican flying to the moon. I like the moon to align that tower in next couple more seconds. Well, until next full moon.

Magnolia, is an ancient genus, appearing before bees did. The flowers are theorized to have evolved to encourage pollination by beetles. To avoid damage from pollinating beetles, the carpels of Magnolia are extremely tough.

Unlike modern flowers, Magnolia flowers lack a distinct petal or sepal, instead bearing a tough combination of the two called tepals that open just like petals. The flowers are bisexual with numerous adnate carpels and stamens that are spirally arranged at the base of the ovary, below the pistils.

From an article in tonight's SFGate:

"It's difficult to track exactly where the smoke is coming from, but Garcia said the August (fire) Complex in Mendocino County and the North Complex east of Chico are generating copious amounts of smoke. Fires are also burning across Oregon. Gov. Kate Brown declared a statewide emergency Tuesday as conflagrations grew rapidly in Marion, Lane, Jackson, Coos, Lincoln, Washington and Clackamas counties. With the current wind pattern, smoke from Oregon is being swept over the Pacific Ocean, with some of it blowing back into Northern California but most of it landing in Southern California."

Ages ago I called this "the freeway plant" when I had no idea of the name and it was planted everywhere in the median strip of freeways in California. I believe that nowadays visibility is considered more important than beautification, so I don't think there are any longer plants dividing the lanes on the freeway.

Some years on, I finally learned the name.

Oh yes, and it is poisonous, I recall, so don't let the grandchildren nibble on it!
