The Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888

Nestled inside this cosmic egg shaped emission nebula lies the star WR 136. These relatively rare stars are classified as Wolf-Rayet type and are at least 20 times more massive than the sun. Tens of thousands of times the brightness of the sun and incredibly hot, these stars have a short life span. They shed mass quickly and later develop substantial winds. Seen here, these winds are colliding with the material puffed off early in the stars evolution resulting in the glowing nebulous shell. Eventually the star will become a supernova and can outshine an entire galaxy.

NGC 6888 is located in one of my favorite summer constellations, Cygnus the swan. It lies in an area

packed with Ha emission nebula 4500 light years distant.

I imaged this object on June 2, 2024 with the Stellarvue SVX102T and SFFR.74 Reducer/Flattener.

An Antlia ALP-T duoband Ha/OIII filter and ASI294mc pro camera were used to capture the image.

All riding on a Losmandy GM8 gemini 2 mount.

Total integrated exposure time – 4.55 hours
