I photographed this picture at Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee several years ago. Patriot Park is located next to the Little Pigeon River. You can see a little of the river in the background if you look closely through the leaves. The park is dedicated to veterans from Sevier County that served during wartime. My family and I always enjoy ourselves on the walking path there after eating at the Old Mill Restaurant. Good for weight control! 😉

I thank everyone who takes the time to take a look at my pictures!
The city of Pigeon Forge located in East Tennessee, is surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains and beautiful scenery for every season. This town is made up of a delightful mix of life-long residents, young families attracted by nature’s beauty, and folks who have chosen to spend their retirement years in Pigeon Forge.
The early history of this town dates back to before the Revolutionary War. The first business was established in the early 1800s. While Pigeon Forge once was a small farming community, the lure of the mountains brought more and more visitors to the area, and new businesses were established to meet the needs of these travelers.
Today, Pigeon Forge is a major tourist destination, and while the city takes care of more than 10 million people who visit each year, their residents are still our top priority. In addition to the Smoky Mountain scenery, Pigeon Forge has plenty of parks and recreational areas, an outstanding community center and public library, as well as an excellent educational system that ranges from pre-school through high school.

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail Spring Scenic

Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP)
Date taken: April 28, 2016
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a six-mile scenic loop road just outside of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), Roaring Fork is a great little stream that gets its name from quickly rising water levels following rain events and the corresponding "echo" off stone walls that amplifies the roar of rushing water. Of particular interest to photographers and tourists alike is the amazing green moss that forms on the river stones. it is the most amazing green color! Add in all the varying spring shades of green along the stream and conditions in Roaring Fork can be quite dream-like!
For this particular photograph I was trying to show the relationship of the sun and the moss/growth through the use of the stream. I tried a variety of more "traditional" shots that I also like, but this one seemed to grab my interest the most. Should you like your water less "dreamy" fear not, I've got several takes with a higher iso setting to achieve faster shutter speeds. And should you find comfort in rules and guidelines, I have several without the wide-angle distortion in the foreground caused from tilting the camera off-axis. I got everyone covered with something on this one :-)!

Waldens Creek is one of the more prominent creeks in Sevier County. Widths of the creek generally range from a few feet to about 20 feet wide. The creek is not very deep and in most places has small rocks along the creek bed and in the water.
I hope to return to Flickr on a regular basis this weekend, but, I'm having a complication in my right eye that interferes with my vision. We will see...

"Hell, there are no rules around here! We're trying to accomplish something!" ~Thomas A. Edison~
Sometimes when everything seems wrong--out of place, ill thought, not balanced--it still feels like you're on the right track. That's kind of my feeling for this one. I was stuck on photographing the stream--Roaring Fork--this particular morning. I was damn stubborn about it too! I waited almost two weeks for the right set of conditions and I wasn't about to waste them shooting the "good light" on some green rocks and chaotic foliage. However, the way the light started backlighting the new spring foliage and spotlighting the green mossy rocks, I knew that the stream itself was no longer the story or the subject of greatest importance. So, I adjusted, stubbornly, and clicked off a few shutter actuations before I buried my head back in the sand and went back to photographing the stream. I should've kept working this composition, but hey, at least I gave it a go! There's some kind of life in the mix of things going on here that really pleases me personally. What do you guys think? Any magic here for you?
We drove 1600 miles (2500 km) round trip to Siever, Utah, to witness the ring of fire, a solar eclipse. On 2017-08-21 I observed the totality of a full solar eclipse, where you can see the corona around the sun. This time on 2023-10-14 the moon was further away from Earth, thus appeared to be smaller, which creates the ring of fire. We selected a spot that was exactly in the center path of the solar eclipse. The partial eclipse started at 9:08 MDT, the annular (ring of fire) was at 10:28 MDT, and ended at 11:56 MDT.
I set the interval timer to 10 sec. Because of the very long lens I had to move the camera frequently to keep the sun in the frame. This image is a composite if 15 images, each exactly 5 minutes apart, where the sun and moon move from the lower left to the upper right. The leftmost sickle is enlarged on the upper left. You can see two sunspots. Notice also the wiggles around the edges, caused by atmospheric refraction. During the day, the sun is warming up the atmosphere, which causes variation in the optical density of different layer's of earth atmosphere. This deviates light from a straight line as it passes through the atmosphere, which results in the wiggles.
Looking at pictures of a solar eclipse is interesting, but experiencing it in person is a whole different level. It is mystical and emotional experience, hard to describe. All I can say is that I recommend to put this on your bucket list if you have not experienced one in person. Totally worth a trip!
I created a composite image from 15 JPG exposures, processed a soft HDR photo from that, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

This picture is taken north from the Scenic Byway, Utah RT12. At right the bright red layers of the Claron Formation (also making up Bryce Canyon a few miles to the east). The sharp line separating the Claron formation from the black basalt flow and talus is the Sevier fault, at this point dropping the western part (left) some 900 meters, one earthquake at the time. The lava flow is only 0.5 million years old and originally covered the fault line, its now about 200 meters lower, indicating a slip rate of about 0.4mm per year.
Gloopy, drippy lava making up part of the Lace Curtain on Pahvant Butte.
Pahvant Butte is a volcanic butte formed by a dormant volcano in the west-central portion of Utah. It is located in the Sevier Desert in the Pahvant Valley. This part of Utah was once covered by a huge inland freshwater sea known as Lake Bonneville. Pahvant Butte volcano erupted under the icy waters of the lake causing the hot lava to solidify in the interesting "drip" formations forming the Lace Curtain. Millard County, Utah.

The Buckingham House is located on a slight elevation overlooking the fertile valleys of the French Broad River in Sevier County. It was built in 1795 by Thomas & Ephriam Buckingham and is the oldest existing house in Sevier County. Although it was not an elaborate house, it was well-built and is still in sound structural condition. The original part of the house was rectangular, of the Federal style, measuring 33' x 20' and consisting of two rooms and an attic. It was built of brick, with an exterior brick chimney at either end. The pattern of the brick on the front elevation is Flemish bond, while on either end it is English bond. A small, four-paned transom window was placed over the front door. Two bricks located to the right of the front bear the inscriptions "T & E B" and "1795" identifying the Thomas & Ephriam Buckingham and the date of construction.
The house also overlooks a large area that was once an island formed by the French Broad River and Boyd's Creek. This area has been known as Big Island, Sevier Island, and Buckingham Island,
which is its present name. The property was bought by Thomas Buckingham from John Sevier, famous Indian fighter and first governor of Tennessee.
Thomas Buckingham was prominent in governmental affairs, having been one of the Commissioners to locate the courthouse when Sevier County was created by the division of Jefferson County in 1794. He was elected as the first sheriff of the county and was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1796 in Tennessee became a state.
The Buckingham House is significant not only as being the oldest existing house in Sevier County, but as one of the few remaining examples of the type of architecture of the early houses built on the Tennessee frontier in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Additionally, with its connection to Mr. Buckingham and his position within the community and the state, this house was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) on March 18, 1971. All of the information above was found on the original documents submitted for NRHP listing consideration and can be viewed here:
