With a little green in between. This is on the dam that separates the eastern and western basins of the Ismaninger Speichersee, with the western basin visible to the left.

The Ismaninger Speichersee is a reservoir in the north of Munich, built in 1929 to regulate the water flow for the run-of-the-river power plants along the Isar Canal.

The reservoir and the adjacent fish ponds are a nature reserve (Europareservat) and an Important Bird Area (IBA).

Wikipedia: The dunlin (Calidris alpina) is a small wader, formerly sometimes separated with the other "stints" in the genus Erolia.

It is a circumpolar breeder in Arctic or subarctic regions. Birds that breed in northern Europe and Asia are long-distance migrants, wintering south to Africa, southeast Asia and the Middle East. Birds that breed in Alaska and the Canadian Arctic migrate short distances to the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America, although those nesting in northern Alaska overwinter in Asia. Many dunlins winter along the Iberian south coast.

There are three male African lions at Zoo Atlanta: Azizi, Hondo and Hatari. They are brothers, and you will often find them inseparable. In fact, the lions are usually only separated from each other when they eat and when they are training.

Dunlin - Calidris alpina

The dunlin (Calidris alpina) is a small wader, sometimes separated with the other "stints" in Erolia. The English name is a dialect form of "dunling", first recorded in 1531–2. It derives from dun, "dull brown", with the suffix -ling, meaning a person or thing with the given quality. The genus name is from Ancient Greek kalidris or skalidris, a term used by Aristotle for some grey-coloured waterside birds. The specific alpina is from Latin and means "of high mountains", in this case referring to the Alps.

An adult dunlin in breeding plumage shows the distinctive black belly which no other similar-sized wader possesses. The winter dunlin is basically grey above and white below. Juveniles are brown above with two whitish "V" shapes on the back. They usually have black marks on the flanks or belly and show a strong white wingbar in flight.

The legs and slightly decurved bill are black. There are a number of subspecies differing mainly in the extent of rufous colouration in the breeding plumage and the bill length. Bill length varies between sexes, the females having longer bills than the males.

Kingfisher - Alcedo Atthis

Double click..

The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) also known as the Eurasian kingfisher, and river kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.

This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile; it has blue upperparts, orange underparts and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving, and has special visual adaptations to enable it to see prey under water. The glossy white eggs are laid in a nest at the end of a burrow in a riverbank.

The female is identical in appearance to the male except that her lower mandible is orange-red with a black tip. The juvenile is similar to the adult, but with duller and greener upperparts and paler underparts. Its bill is black, and the legs are also initially black. Feathers are moulted gradually between July and November with the main flight feathers taking 90–100 days to moult and regrow. Some that moult late may suspend their moult during cold winter weather.

The flight of the kingfisher is fast, direct and usually low over water. The short rounded wings whirr rapidly, and a bird flying away shows an electric-blue "flash" down its back.

The common kingfisher is widely distributed over Europe, Asia, and North Africa, mainly south of 60°N. It is a common breeding species over much of its vast Eurasian range, but in North Africa it is mainly a winter visitor, although it is a scarce breeding resident in coastal Morocco and Tunisia. In temperate regions, this kingfisher inhabits clear, slow-flowing streams and rivers, and lakes with well-vegetated banks. It frequents scrubs and bushes with overhanging branches close to shallow open water in which it hunts. In winter it is more coastal, often feeding in estuaries or harbours and along rocky seashores. Tropical populations are found by slow-flowing rivers, in mangrove creeks and in swamps.

Like all kingfishers, the common kingfisher is highly territorial; since it must eat around 60% of its body weight each day, it is essential to have control of a suitable stretch of river. It is solitary for most of the year, roosting alone in heavy cover. If another kingfisher enters its territory, both birds display from perches, and fights may occur, in which a bird will grab the other's beak and try to hold it under water. Pairs form in the autumn but each bird retains a separate territory, generally at least 1 km (0.62 mi) long, but up to 3.5 km (2.2 mi) and territories are not merged until the spring.

Very few birds live longer than one breeding season. The oldest bird on record was 21 years.

They are also listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act offering them additional protection.

False Creek _ Blue Hour

Vancouver

Evening reflections

False Creek is a short inlet in the heart of Vancouver. It separates downtown from the rest of the city. It was named by George Henry Richards during his Hydrographic survey of 1856-63. George Richards named False Creek during his survey of the coast in the mid-19th century. While traveling along the south side of the Burrard Inlet, he thought he was traversing a creek; upon discovering his error, he gave the waterway its modern name. Wikipedia

The Burrard Bridge (also referred to as the Burrard Street Bridge) is a five-lane, Art Deco style, steel truss bridge constructed in 1930-1932 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The high, five part bridge on four piers spans False Creek, connecting downtown Vancouver with Kitsilano via connections to Burrard Street on both ends. It is one of three bridges crossing False Creek.

Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes or fynbos. The family is Proteaceae. In local tradition, the protea flower represents change and hope. The extraordinary richness and diversity of species characteristic of the Cape flora are thought to be caused in part by the diverse landscape, where populations can become isolated from each other and in time develop into separate species. The main vectors responsible for the transfer of pollen in protea cultivation are birds, insects, and wind. Some Protea species exhibit both self-pollination and cross-pollination as a method of reproduction. Cross-pollination is preferred, though, as a method of reproduction because it provides genetic diversity in the population. When cultivating proteas, breeders use hand pollination as a controlled method to transfer pollen from one flower to another. Proteas usually flower during spring. The general structure of their flower heads consists of a mass of flowers on a woody receptacle. The ovary is protected by the receptacle, thus is not seen when looking at the flower, but the anthers are present at the top of the flower, which can then easily transfer the pollen to the vectors. 11113

THANK YOU!!!!

This little Douglas Fir tree is about 40-50 years old. It has survived countless weather events by growing on top of a floating log in a lake on Vancouver Island. It is apparently the most photographed tree in Canada. We had not planned on visiting this iconic scene simply because so many people from around the world have tried to photograph it. Conditions have to be just right in order to separate the tree from background clutter and unless you have hip waders, there is no good vantage point to shoot this tree. We had no hip waders and very little time to wait for the right conditions. However, on our quick morning visit to see the tree on our way to our next destination, I was able to frame up this portrait with a long lens just as a bit of light hit the tree and there was a momentary stillness in the light breeze rippling the water. The background is the water with refections. It was magical to see this little survivor. Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday.

A taxon named the Highland Darter used to be considered a separate species, Sympetrum nigrescens. It is found in Scotland, Ireland and Norway. It may be the same taxon as the Island Darter, formally S. nigrifemur, both being a subspecies of S. striolatum. This male Common 'Highland' Darter was seen near Gairloch, Wester Ross in the northwest Highlands of Scotland, on 2nd July 2023.

Hopefully.... See you next spring. Grey Tree Frog.

The year I turned 40, I flew to Costa Rica to try something that was on my bucket list: surfing. I took the Sunwing “champagne” flight, and stayed with family in a villa just steps from the ocean. It was a dream come true. This photo was taken one evening with my old Canon camera as I walked the beach alone. The sunset was spectacular—just the remedy at the time for my restless heart. It felt like a gift. It took my breath away.

I was raised by the water, but I haven’t always lived by lakes (and later the ocean) that I grew up around. I thought that I would return to the coast permanently at some point, but that hasn’t been in the cards for me. Only people who truly love the water know what it’s like to be separated from it. It is an ache that never leaves you. Although, if I were to leave here, inevitably there would be things to miss (like brilliant autumn leaves, my proximity to Toronto, etc.). You can never have it all, it seems, which is why we must be grateful for what we have. And I am grateful, for opportunities, memories and photos that can take me back—even if only briefly in my mind.

The Iconic "Rostrum". Yosemite Valley, CA.

I've marveled at the aesthetic beauty of this formation while driving up hwy 140 into Yosemite valley. This view is from Big Oak Flat Road. While this road is extremely scenic, it was always point A to point B for me and I never attempted to stop at any of the crowded pull outs. This past weekend I finally took the time and enjoyed the view.

Huge albatross of the Southern Ocean. Two subspecies: “Gibson’s” breeds primarily on Auckland Island and ranges at sea around New Zealand and eastern Australia; “Antipodean” breeds mostly on Antipodes and Campbell Islands and ranges mainly across Pacific to Humboldt Current off Chile. Plumage highly variable, starting chocolate-brown with a white face and gradually becoming whiter over many years. Younger birds separated from Southern Royal Albatross by darker tail, brown markings on head and back, and lack of black “lips” on cutting edge of bill. Older birds more difficult to separate; focus on more coarsely marked upperwings, often with conspicuous white patch in center of wing, and lack of black “lips”. Often shows orange stain on cheek, never shown by Southern Royal. Identification from other Wandering-type Albatross is extremely difficult and often presumed by range. Older “Antipodean” often retain complete dark cap, tail, and upperwings. (eBird)

Large albatross with a total length of 110–117 cm (1) and a wingspan of 2.8–3.3 m. (Birds of the World)

Another close encounter with an albatross. Just slightly smaller than the Southern Royal Albatross posted earlier, the best way to tell the difference is the lack of "black lips" on this bird. The bill is also slightly pinker. Regardless, it was seabird overload at Kaikoura and I loved every minute of it.

Happy Caturday!! Viking Iceland cruise excursion from Reykjavik

Garðskagaviti can be found on the topmost point of the Reykjanes Peninsula, directly above Keflavík International Airport (KEF). Originally, a lighthouse at the site was constructed with timber in 1897 by the Danish Lighthouse Commission. In 1933, the lighthouse was renovated, reinforced with concrete, before being decommissioned in 1944 due to fear of landslides.

Garðskagaviti, standing at 26 metres high, was built as a replacement. It is today considered one of Iceland’s most picturesque lighthouses with its vibrant red and white paint job and gorgeous surrounding scenery.

The lighthouse keeper kept a permanent residence here until 1979.
