March 16, 1993 - Arrived tonight in Marrakesh and am staying on the edge of the market. It is Ramadan and there is heightened activity all around. I am struck by the hooded features of men as they pass through the lights and shadows: they look monk-like. Horses, carriages, cars, bicycles and thousands of people are embroiled in the activities of the night ... a cacophony of sound. I retreat to a rooftop café to watch while sipping mint tea ... many circles of twenty or so people are scattered around the market, each involved in their own drama of music, storytelling monkeys on men's shoulders, or cobras being coaxed to "dance" on rugs; "magic" concoctions of bone, seeds, stones and spices are sold ... women are veiled to a great degree ... I am stuck by the sense of intrigue the environment creates; as much is concealed as is revealed ...

I think I photographed this old stable each time I went on Rarau, but although the composition was there, I have never really got a satisfying result.
Finally now, with snow and a very dark cloud in the background, I think I'm where I wanted to be.
The final was making this B&W because it really did make the most sense, as the small blue from the sky was just taking away from the main focus.

I shot this a few weeks ago and am just getting around to posting it. On this day, snow had started to fall but it had not covered this street yet, but......it is now!
There is something with the way
the shadows fall and the light plays off of the cobblestones that makes this pure magic for me. It is hard to not be completely overwhelmed by the deep sense of history that seems to exude from all of its pores. One of my top ten reasons for loving this city, Poznan.
Location: Berlin - 1134km from home.
A super bizarre spot. Despite their German origins, these cars are pretty rare to see. They're just not the thing you want to drive around in in downton Berlin. I was even more surprised to find thi NSU registred to Serbia. It probably makes more sense in VB.

These last two shots really had to be in monochrome. I did think about reducing the saturation levels so the barest colour appeared, but in the end I went for classic black and white. I wonder sometimes if some people today struggle with understanding what black and white photography is about. We live in a world of instant simulation, and it takes imagination and effort to "read" a black and white.
Ansel Adams once likened working in colour to be like playing an out of tune piano (Adams was a concert pianist before turning to photography).
'"I can get—for me—a far greater sense of ‘color' through a well-planned and executed black-and-white image than I have ever achieved with color photography," he wrote in 1967. For Adams, who could translate sunlight's blinding spectrum into binary code perhaps more acutely than anyone before or since, there was an "infinite scale of values" in monochrome. I like that description. Mind you I recently purchased "Ansel Adams in Color" (Little, Brown and Company, 1993), and although there's not a lot of his colour slides left (most have deteriorated with time), what is in this collection is a real treasure.

Eixirem a fer l'eixida de sol, però estava massa ennuvolat el dia. Aquesta llum roja que va inundar el paisatge durà només un moment, però la vam poder captar.
We wanted to take a sunrise picture but it was too cloudy. Only for a moment a red light bathed the scenery. It took very little time but we were prepared and could fix it on our camera sensors.
