I wasn't exactly ravishing in this image, but the mirror sure was! This was taken at the Lightner Museum in St. Augustine, FL.

Words - Bobby Moses

Last week, Hoxton was blessed with two different flavors of consciousness. Hoxton Bar & Kitchen was overrun with an enthusiastic sample of the next generation of hip hop heads, who had come out to see Brooklyn's Underachievers, supported by London's newest gift to the scene, Hawk House. Two acts, two distinct sounds, one theme: progression.

Before the show, Hawk House could be found chilling in front of the venue, humbly receiving props and support, including from Maverick Sabre, one of the UK's most talented artists today, who had come to catch their performance and show some love. Their beautiful, J Dilla-esque production was complimented by not only graceful flows, but also relevant and honest content. Finally. Their stage presence was casual, yet confident; their style classic, yet fresh. It is hard to believe that this was only their second performance. The way they played off of each other was effortless, intricately exchanging bars on tracks like, "It's Everyday," which ended with the entire crowd yelling, "THE GENERAL CONSENSUS NEVER CHANGED!"

The Underachievers, on the other hand, could be found hanging out with different crowds of fans and new friends, drinking, laughing, and taking walks around the block. It's crazy how different their sound and energy could be from Hawk House's opening set, while still pushing us in the same progressive direction. Heavy 808's and deep, almost psychedelic synths were laced with tongue-twisting lyrics and packed with esoteric references and encouragement towards self-exploration--proof that bangin' trap beats no longer have to be wasted on nonsense . The Underachievers' lyrics are still super raw though; don't get it twisted. The energy in the show was incredible--the perfect balance of meditative herbal aromas and mosh pits. The crowd chanting "BEAST COAST!" into an encore says it all.

London just got a glimpse of two phenomenal new acts. The Underachievers are a vital component of the refreshing Beast Coast movement coming out of New York, specifically Brooklyn and, more specifically, Flatbush. On this side of the pond, Hawk House has been receiving well-deserved comparisons to The Fugees--three artists, all with their own voice, speaking as one. These two unique sounds are products of a new generation of artists, refusing to feed the machine. We can look forward to seeing these artists grow and to seeing other new sounds they might inspire.

Using the iPhone selfie lens and hand placement to create unusual self-portraits.

One in a series of creative and/or edgy selfies.

These images are creared for fun, but also for self-exploration as I am looking back at my life from the perspective of an older person dealing with health issues.

Over time, these self-portraits aim to show different sides of my personality, humanity and masculinity. They may be whimsical, serious, dark, sexual, optimistic, angry, serene and so on.

I hope you enjoy them. If not, look away.

From the Tate Website:

"For Carsten Höller, the experience of sliding is best summed up in a phrase by the French writer Roger Caillois as a ‘voluptuous panic upon an otherwise lucid mind’. The slides are impressive sculptures in their own right, and you don’t have to hurtle down them to appreciate this artwork. What interests Höller, however, is both the visual spectacle of watching people sliding and the ‘inner spectacle’ experienced by the sliders themselves, the state of simultaneous delight and anxiety that you enter as you descend.

To date Höller has installed six smaller slides in other galleries and museums, but the cavernous space of the Turbine Hall offers a unique setting in which to extend his vision. Yet, as the title implies, he sees it as a prototype for an even larger enterprise, in which slides could be introduced across London, or indeed, in any city. How might a daily dose of sliding affect the way we perceive the world? Can slides become part of our experiential and architectural life?

Höller has undertaken many projects that invite visitor interaction, such as Flying Machine (1996) that hoists the user through the air, Upside-Down Goggles (1994/2001) that modify vision, and Frisbee House (2000) - a room full of Frisbees. The slides, like these earlier works, question human behaviour, perception and logic, offering the possibility for self-exploration in the process."

One day all cities will be built like this.
