MYANMAR, burma - rund um den Inle-See, die Phaung-Daw-Oo-Pagode, die königliche Barke.

Nach dem Ende der Monsunzeit findet das große Fest zur Verehrung der fünf Buddha-Statuen von Phaung Daw U statt. Ausgangs- und Endpunkt der Schiffsprozession ist die Pagode. Etwa drei Wochen lang werden vier der fünf Statuen auf eine Reise in alle wichtigen Dörfer und Klöster des Inle-Sees geschickt. Eine Figur bleibt seit 1965 an ihrem Platz, weil sie damals bei einem Schiffsunglück scheinbar verloren gegangen, aber auf mysteriöse Weise wieder aufgetaucht war. Die Buddhas werden jeden Morgen in einem feierlichen Zeremoniell auf die goldene Königsbarke geladen und von einer langen Reihe festlich geschmückter Ruderboote an ihr nächstes Ziel gezogen. Dort werden die Figuren auf einem Altar in der Tempelhalle präsentiert und bilden den Mittelpunkt des bunten Treibens.

Zum abschließenden Höhepunkt des Festes versammeln sich alle Boote und zahlreiche Gläubige vor der Phaung Daw U-Pagode. Die Buddhafiguren werden an ihren angestammten Platz zurückgebracht, die Königsbarke wird in ihre Garage rückwärts eingeparkt. Ganz bemerkenswert sind die Ruderboote: sie sind unglaublich lang, bis zu hundert Einbeinruderer in zwei Reihen nebeneinander haben darauf Platz. Die Boote sind geschmückt mit Bananenblättern, Fähnchen und bunten Schirmen und manchmal ausgestattet mit Musikinstrumenten, neuerdings auch mit batteriebetriebenen Lautsprecheranlagen.

After the end of the monsoon season, the big festival of worshiping the five Buddha statues of Phaung Daw U takes place. The starting and ending point of the ship procession is the pagoda. For about three weeks, four of the five statues will be sent on a journey to all the important villages and monasteries of Inle Lake. One figure has remained in place since 1965, apparently lost in a shipwreck but mysteriously reappeared. Every morning, in a solemn ceremony, the Buddhas are loaded onto the golden royal barge and pulled to their next destination by a long line of festively decorated rowing boats. There the figures are presented on an altar in the temple hall and form the center of the hustle and bustle.

At the final highlight of the festival, all the boats and numerous believers gather in front of the Phaung Daw U Pagoda. The Buddha figures are returned to their original place, the royal barge is parked backwards in its garage.

What was a quick stop along westbound I88 to release some pressure on a long ride east of Oneonta, NY, turned into a stroke of luck as this Canadian Pacific/Delaware & Hudson train just "happen" to appear from nowhere. Dripping in one hand and a Canon F-1 in the other I was able to multitask and get this shot!
