A United Launch Alliance Atlas V with NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, launches from its Space Launch Complex-41 launch pad at 10:23 a.m. EST today. SDO is the first satellite of NASA's Living with a Star program.

Edited SDO image of the sun and a very large (the largest in 24 years) solar flare in the bottom-right quadrant of the sun. (It also looks as if there's a valley in the upper-left quadrant - I don't know what that dark line is...)
