This photo was taken at the Bosley Conservancy on July 17, 2023. The picture encapsulates positive and negative factors influencing the sustainable development goal 6, ensuring availability and sustainable management of water for all. The picture was taken in a lagoon connected to the Otter Point Creek wetland area, a tributary of the Bush River and the Chesapeake Bay. In the background there are mature trees visible, buffering the lagoon area keeping soil intact and slowing water runoff. Also visible is growth of Zizania aquatica (Wild Rice), a native marsh grass that supports nutrient uptake and functioning ecosystems. Under the water surface is hydrilla, a submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) although nonnative provides fish habitat and is well adapted to areas with low light. The strong prominence of algae could potentially explain why the hydrilla is therefore more prominent in this spot than other SAV. Despite the prominence of positive species such as wild rice, the algae in this lagoon is indicative of poor water quality, and can lead to even worse water quality. Human activity leads to excess nitrogen deposition on impervious surfaces, and use of fertilizers in agriculture creates an increase in nitrogen and phosphorus inputs into the environment. With precipitation the excess nitrogen and phosphorus runs off into waterways, leading to increased concentrations in areas like this lagoon. This increase in these limiting nutrients creates opportunity for the algae to spread, which leads to lack of light reaching deeper into the water column and upon the seasonal die offs of the blooms "dead zones" with decreased dissolved oxygen content. While areas such as this lagoon are vital for filtering runoff to preserve the water quality of the Bay, human actions have lead to not suboptimal function that reduces water quality. With the water quality of the Bay tied to recreational enjoyment and economic activity, people must ensure that they are responsible in managing the water running off in the watershed of the Bay. This includes proper waste management in waste treatment facilities, ensuring good buffer zones around waterways, and minimizing excess nutrient influx.
