Canadian National train No. 310 departs Swan Landing, Alberta, along Brule Lake on the afternoon of July 7, 2014. CN EMD SD75I No. 5756 leads a pair of GE C44-9Ws (2577 and 2599) and EMD SD70M-2 No. 8883 through this scenic setting just east of Jasper National Park.
A Canadian National freight rumbles over the Pembina River Bridge between Entwistle and Evansburg, Alberta, on CN’s Edson Subdivision toward the end of the day on August 4, 2016. Powering the train are two CN EMD SD75Is, Nos. 5686 and 5709.
An SD75i powers CN train 122 as they approach the Folly Brook trestle near New Denmark, New Brunswick. A wide angle shot here is too tight, so I decided to improvise since the the hills along here are full of Fall in all its glory.

Westbound CN 119 climbs into Jasper, Alberta, with the snow capped mountains behind and an SD75I in the lead.
With some incredible timing, a CN manifest freight M356 cruises south on the Rainy Sub as loaded ore train U717 rolls east towards Proctor on the Missabe Sub, creating a perfect over-under on the bridge at Munger, Minnesota.

Along the tranquil waters of Brule Lake just east of Jasper National Park, Canadian National train No. 310 arcs through Robertson’s Curve at Swan Landing, Alberta, on the afternoon of July 7, 2014. CN EMD SD75I No. 5756 leads GE C44-9Ws Nos. 2577 and 2599 followed by EMD SD70M-2 No. 8883 on the eastbound stack train at this scenic location on CN’s Edson Subdivision.
An SD75i leads eastbound train 306 as they cross the trestle at Saint Eleuthere, in Eastern Quebec on a glorious Fall day. Fall is out in all its glory on this day. The scenery is always great in Northern New Brunswick and eastern Quebec.

Canadian Nationals L517 had a late start out of Steven’s Point, which always draws interest on the train as it means it’ll likely pass over the Arcola high bridge, which usually happens at night. Such was the case here, as we see the train making its way into Minnesota with an SD75I and C44-9W as power.
After chasing an eastbound trash train with an SD75i leading (flic.kr/p/2ocGe1e), I thought I'd hit the jackpot and was planning on chasing it as far as I can. But seeing an eastbound with a BN engine leading was a no brainer and I started chasing it west towards Vancouver. I gotta say the Fallbridge subdivision is an absolute treat both for scenery and trashy power.
BNSF freight H-ROOEVE1-17A, led by an EMD SD75I and two other EMD roster mates, hustles west alongside the Columbia river on its way back up to the Puget Sound for a refill.
The day after our first substantial snowfall of the season it was still cold enough to keep it around. #397 passes mile 42 on the Halton Sub (and an oak still clinging to its leaves).
I didn't hear anything on the scanner before this guy called the approach signal just east of here but a MOW truck has pulled off the train an hour prior and sat waiting. I took that as a sign that I should wait too. I was eventually rewarded with #397 and #147 right behind him. And bonus - they both had GM leaders!
ONT 214 splits a pair of bidirectional searchlights north of Temagami on their way south to North Bay. The CTC was turned off several years ago, but the possibility of passenger services returning to the ONR will hopefully mean a restoration of CTC here.

A repainted EMD SD75I leads BNSF Train G FTDBVA5 27H past the endangered CB&Q searchlights at East Halls on the BNSF St. Joseph Sub. I say "endangered", and don't take that word lightly, replacements are on site for several control points just down the track.
I have to say, these are probably my favorite orange engines on the roster at this point. I enjoy both photographing and running them. Lack of Trip Optimizer is a great start.
Also, I'm did a little watermark revamp and I went full color. I don't have a lot of pictures "stolen", but I get a little more annoyed by it every time. I hate for it to be distracting, in fact, I'd rather not use one at all, but at least the losers have to crop half the sky out.

CN L549 passes through Eagle Mills Jct on its way to Ishpeming with an SD75I and SD60 for power. I actually got completely surprised by this train and had only pulled up a few minutes prior, what was mostly an unprepared rushed shot has become a favorite of mine already.
ONT 2104 leads train 308 through the rock cut at Boston Creek Ontario.
This has been a shot that I have always wanted and was more than happy to have been able to get during this trip.
CN 5771 leads a 4 pack of SD75I's on a heavy northbound manifest up Steelton Hill. As you can imagine, four EMDs hauling over 10k feet of train over a 2% grade sounded glorious. Even though the Iron Range has its own charm, my visit to the area started, and ended, on Steelton Hill. It's a fun diversion for sure.

In typical Pacific Northwest weather, a handsome duo of SD75I's pull an eastbound trash train alongside the mighty Columbia River in Stevenson, WA.
A pair of 75i's lead U743, the afternoon Empire Mine empties, north at Plains near KI Sawyer. By July 2016, these trains were on short time. And unlike so many "Last year of the XYZ" prophecies you hear today, these actually did come to an end in the Autumn. There are always rumors floating around about Empire reopening though. So maybe one day we will see ore flowing to the Escanaba dock once again.
This set of 70's was pretty ho-hum at the time. Especially when this train drew IC 70s and C40-8Ms that season. But now they don't look so bad 7 years later. I also recall this being a spontaneous weekend up on the Marquette Range, with DanK, Silka, Woodtick, and Kmad all joining in on the fun. We ended up getting what we came for and only a few asses were chapped in the process.
CN L502 makes its way past a farmstead and Old Onondaga Road on the CN Hagersville Subdivision.
This was an excellent day as a railfan on the line as we shot 4 separate movements between Brantford and Garnet Ontario.
Another one of those fine summer afternoons in Wisconsin, finds us waiting in the siding at Marsh for northbound traffic, so I climbed the signal for a quick photo. The lead locomotive, a SD75i, were referred to as Cadillacs, not sure why. But I sure did like running them, as they had plenty of power, rode very well and the cabs were quite ergonomically friendly.

ONR Train No. 214 builds their southbound consist in the yard on a chilly morning as they prepare for the journey to North Bay and back.
So I set up for this wide shot of ONT 214 passing through Tamagami, but another photographer ended up in my shot at the last moment. Determined to salvage the otherwise perfect photo I spent a solid 4 hours editing out the person. I used a test shot I took before hand to clone stamp over the area he was standing in. If anyone can guess where he was in the shot, you get an internet cookie.

Two BNSF SD75s lead a train of empty trash containers back to Everett, where they will be reloaded for the trip back to Roosevelt. Both engines leading this consist were built in November 1997, followed by an overhaul in late 2017/early 2018.
Utah Railway's RUT611 Provo-Ogden turn breezes westward through Riverton, Utah the evening of May 22, 2001. The all-EMD power consist includes BNSF (Santa Fe) SD75i No. 8249, Utah Railway GP38 No. 2008 and NREX SD20s No. 2033 and 2040.

-20C is a hell of a lot more manageable if the sun is out and winds are calm..... aaaand if you're waiting at a picturesque location for an Ontario Northland freight. Here we see train 211 working it's way northbound on the Ramore Sub on their way to Rouyn-Noranda, QC with SD75i 2104 in the lead followed by a pair of SD40-2s.
Summer is here in Alberta but since I haven't been shooting much here's a shot from February. Southbound A418 passes through Fawcett Alberta on CN's Westlock Subdivision. Since the tree's are way too tall here I won't be trying this angle until next winter!
Ten days after a series of catastrophic washouts in British Columbia brought trains across CN’s system to a halt, 5758 will finally be on the move again over snow-packed rails as night falls at Decoigne, Alberta.
This was my third experience with IC 2463 this year and, again, it was on the third of the month. On January 3rd, I had come out to shoot it in the hopes that it wouldn’t get wyed in Mirror; very hopeful of me. Obviously, it got wyed in favour of an SD75I. This particular 75I sounded as though it was trying very hard to not just keel over and die. Or detonate. Neither would have surprised me much; I was no expert but I couldn’t help but wonder if there was a reason that the IC unit was leading initially. Regardless, it trailed and that was that.
Two months later, March 3rd, it was back, this time on L550. It would have been so much easier had it been on L555 who, as far as I could tell, were incapable of wyeing their power once they got going. That was unfortunately not the case however and I was back on my way to Mirror. I got somewhat closer this time and saw it lead on its way to the wye. Not much of an improvement but an improvement nonetheless. If anything, the 75I that was wyed in favour of it didn't sound as though it was teetering on the edge of catastrophic failure.
So, when I got word of it returning, again, this time on the 3rd of April, I was hopeful that the trend of slight improvements would continue and that I would finally be able to shoot it leading south. The further north I got though the less hopeful I became and I eventually pulled in at Lousana and waited to, inevitably, hear a CN unit get cleared south. Sure, it would' have been considerably harder to wye with both units facing south but they could’ve stuck a new unit on entirely; I’d seen it happen before. This never happened though and the consist managed to make it through Mirror untouched.
Seen here, the train approaches Township Road 340 just south of Huxley. It looks like it was an intermodal train and it almost was except for the eight or so random cars up front. Thankfully, they were somewhat hidden at this spot and, at first glance, it looks like a standard intermodal. The heat haze was especially frustrating this day but I feel as though this shot came out pretty clear.
The Bluff Transfer runs back home light power while passing the parking lot on main 1 at Union Jct in some nice winter light.
CN freight M397 powers uphill out of Brampton passing the Mount Pleasant GO platforms on the the Halton Sub, approaching Bovaird. GMD-built SD75I 5773 leads two other GE widenoses and over a mile of mixed manifest westbound on a hot April afternoon.
On April 11, 2018, Elkhorn Shifter 83J pulls 50 empties from the mine at Bishop, Wv the end of the Jacob’s Fork Branch with a CN ‘whisper cab’ SD75i for power. The unique code line mounted US&S R2 signals to the left still stand today, and have even seen the likes of Y6B’s in their time.
CN Q110 heads east through Frankfort Illinois on the CN Matteson Subdivision with a BCOL C40-8M, CN SD75I, and CN C40-8M
A trio of Ontario Northland EMDs hustle North Bay to Englehart train no. 113 across the Net Lake causeway on the scenic Temagami Subdivision.
Pressing northwards along the ONR, a particular verse from Stompin' Tom Connor's rendition of "I've Been Everywhere" always comes to mind (youtu.be/g9gg8GEy-ls?t=170):
"Now this truck driver turned around again to me and said, 'Look here buddy, I'm kinda gettin' sick and tired of you talkin' about all these United States cities and towns. I'm a Canadian truck driver and I want to here a little bit of the North Country for a change' Well, I said there's always North Bay and headin' up into Northern Ontario to places like Temagami, New Liskeard, Haileybury, Cobalt, Timmins, Ansonville, Kirkland Lake, Cochrane, Kapuskasing, Hearst, Geraldton, Beardmore, and the Lake Head..."
An inukshuk stands guard over the snow-covered landscape at Cobalt, Ont., as a quartet of EMDs press on towards North Bay.
A look back to the winter of 2009 when power consists like this on Q102 were the norm. I'm still a little miffed at myself for cutting off the train on the left side of the frame.....
A Sunday edition of the BNCP heads over the intersection between E Hennepin and Stinson on BNSF's St. Paul Subdivision with 93 cars in tow for the CP. Conveniently, they came into view as the traffic pattern was cycling from Hennepin to Stinson affording a 0-cars view.
