CSX 8902 whisks the usually reliable Q008 through the sweeping curve just east of Sidney, OH, leaving a plumb of fresh powder in its wake from a light dusting of snow the night prior.
With one of the harder to get ST70AH tier 4 EMD units on the point, CSX L303 slowly crawls into the siding at Howell with the last glow of sun warming the sky behind the train. The massive C&O era signal bridge is 1 of 3 C&O signal bridges that still stand.
One of CSX's ten Tier 4 SD70ACe's kicks up a cloud of snow and exhaust as it pulls manifest freight Q367 west through Bergen, New York. An AC44CM rebuild brought up the mid-train DPU.

Ultra mega clean SD70ACe-T4 No. 3079 leads Union Pacific's MNPML 04 through the farming village of Uintah, Utah the afternoon of on Dec. 6, 2022.
After months of zero effort applied to catching anything KCS, I was pleasantly surprised to luck into the MKCVN sporting a banana-flavored SD70ACe-T4. After catching the train in Granite City, the kids and I chased him down to Sauget, IL for the signature Arch shot. Luckily, nature helped a bit with some meager fall foliage.
Progress Rail (EMDX) SD70ACe-T4 leasers #7205 and 7207 lead KCS train MKCVN around the curve and off the Godfrey Sub at Godfrey, IL. In a few moments, the train will join UP's Springfield Sub for the run down main 1 to East St. Louis. Unfortunately, the KCS yard was plugged today and this train did not make its destination, instead getting parked next to another MKCVN in Venice yard. Hopefully these two stay on the KC-to-STL run for a while.
Thanks to SS for the heads-up call as my son and I were leaving a Boy Scout event this morning. Perfect timing, and finally, perfect weather to match.
Started the New Year with a pretty good chase of Union Pacific SD70AH-T4 #3000 (ex-EMDX 1502) seen here between Dos and Lacy sidings in Western Colo.
It was leading a W. Elk Mine to Cora, IL eastbound loaded coal train.
Pair of UP SD70AH-T4 locomotives lead a loaded coal train heading east on UP's Limon Subdivision heading towards Bennett, Colorado while hitting a Sag. Glad to have caught this train because this line doesn't see as many trains now these days.
A Union Pacific SD70ACe-T4 leads eastbound NS 234 across the Pigeon Creek through truss bridge at Naugatuck, on their way towards Williamson.
What got me out in the first place on this day was catching this EMD Tier IV leader rolling over Santa Fe Junction on the Virtual Railcam feed. Thanks to some helpful mid-day updates from the rest of the Kansas Sub intel gang, along with an assist by the MOW who were effectively single-tracking the line, the train didn't leave Topeka until after my work hours.
With work being particularly stressful for me on Wednesday, it was great to be able to get out to photograph some trains, providing a few hours of mindlessness; something completely divorced from work. It sure was nice for the Railfan Gods to present me with not just one, but TWO good looking leaders on back-to-back afternoon westbounds. Thanks, world.
Regarding the train itself, the 3076 is leading a cut of Schneider 53' double stack containers on the IG1LC, indicative of the shipping company's recent traffic shift to the UP from the BNSF. The switch was to be finalized by January 1, 2023. More on this move can be found here: www.up.com/media/releases/schneider-intermodal-service-nr...
Union Pacific SD70M No. 4533 and SD70ACe-T4 No. 3001 pulled an 11-car PCBSL 17 officer's special into Salt Lake City, Utah on Sept. 19, 2021.
Cresting the summit of Raccoon Mountain is CSX Q647-04 being led by one of the few CSX Tier 4 ACe's. 12/05/2020
CSX O75130 heads north near Baker Spur (just north of Indiantown, FL) on the CSX Auburndale Subdivision with a fairly new, at the time, ST70AH leading.
O751 was an autorack turn job that ran from Winston to Palm Center then back to Winston. Palm center is located near Palm Beach and sees consistent auto shipments by rail daily (loads in, empties out). Unfortunately, this train only existed for a month or two until it was abolished and Q213 was created. The ST70AHs were common to see on this train due to its origin and destination of Winston, FL. The ST70s were based from there so there was always a good chance you would see one or even a pair.
Lake State train Z490 is southbound at South Hoyt with a 91 car grain train from the Anderson's in Standish, MI. Leading the train today is one of CSXs new SD70ACe-T4. Seeing one of these beasts up here is definitely unique as the signals date back to 1928 installations minus a few that have been replaced. Signals have also been slated for replacement on the Saginaw sub between Saginaw and Flint, so get your shots while you can.
With the warm, pastel colors of sunset settling in over Denver, three new Union Pacific EMD SD70ACe-T4s lead MNYRO out of Leyden, Colorado, at 8:10 p.m. on June 14, 2017. The three T4s—Nos. 3027, 3019, 3014—along with a rear DPU (the trailing GE ES44AC and two SD70ACes are dead-in-consist) power the westbound train up the 2-percent grade and it was amazing how quiet they were.
Union Pacific SD70ACe-T4 No. 3026 pulls eight new "Amtrak Midwest" coaches through Echo Canyon the afternoon of June 26, 2021. The cars were built by Siemens in Sacramento, California for state-supported Amtrak routes in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin.
New EMD-Progress Rail SD70ACe-T4 locomotives pull Union Pacific’s Salt Lake City - Denver merchandise train through the Jordan Narrows in Bluffdale, Utah the afternoon of June 16, 2017.

A clean looking Tier 4 wastes no time taking the "Bird" on its trip to the west coast as it flies under the Dekalb coal tower with one of UP's hottest Z trains, the ZG1BRB.
A new'ish SD70ACe leads a westbound empty Clay Boswell empty on the Grand Forks Sub near Mallory, MN.
This shot is a nice illustration of the changes that were taking place in the northern plains with regards to coal power. The prominence of DC-powered coal like the SD75M yielded to the MAC which would eventually yield to the ACe. As with most things, the ACe looked good when new/clean. These days? Meh. But, it's not like they're going anywhere soon. It's going on 15 years since this shot was taken, and it's not like the SD70ACe-T4 lit the railroad industry ablaze...
Fresh UP SD70ACe-T4 3039 moves west with M-PRAL on the Milwaukee Sub at South 6th St, Milwaukee. The abutments either side of the train carried the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee interurban on a high fill along South 6th in its entrance into the Cream City, until its abandonment in 1963.
Union Pacific SD70ACe-T4 No. 3067 leads a 74-car MNPML 25 auto train along the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains approaching Erda, Utah the morning of Aug. 27, 2021.
EMDX SD70ACe-T4 #7225 is seen leading CP train 850 through Secretan Saskatchewan in the last light of the day.
A trio of Progress Rail SD70ACe-T4s (7238, 7234, and 7233) continues testing on KCS, leading the MESKCJ north on UP Springfield Sub main 1 at WR Tower in Granite City, IL. The usual spot for northbounds on a summer morning. That's UP's ZG4MQ headed south on main 2.
The paint scheme's boring as hell but clean units are always worthy of a few expended pixels.
An EMD SD70ACe-T4 leads a Global 2 to Los Angeles intermodal train west of Ogden, Utah the afternoon of May 8, 2020.
Thanks, I'll take the treat...
...such as these Progress Rail (EMDX) SD70ACe-T4 leasers on the KCS MVNKC at Godfrey, IL. Thanks to a timely FRA waiver, their lack of PTC won't keep them in trail or DPU service.
This was a lucky grab that required some distance driving. After leaving an eye appointment near my home base, I headed back downtown to use up the rest of my excused absence from work. A chance snippet of radio traffic led me to believe that these units, which came in after dark on yesterday's MKCVN, were on their way out of town. A maintenance issue kept this train at about 25 mph until the second unit was placed on line, affording me a chance to get ahead of it. Hope this becomes a regular occurrence.

Early morning coal empties make their way over the Root River in Racine, WI, on UP’s Kenosha Sub. The leader, being an SD70ACe-T4, is the (statistically speaking) rarest road engine you can find on UP, accounting for <15% of the active roster, so shooting these leading is always a treat (for me at least).
On a rather cloudy day just before the rain, UP 3012 leads it’s coal load across the summit of the Palmer Divide heading south.
A still new looking EMD SD70ACe-T4 leads UP Train CNANW 05 past the elevator at Levasy on the UP River Sub. bound for Independence, AR. On the rear end keeping the slack bunched is UP 8220 as their DPU.

One last one for 2022, SD70ACe-T4 3037 was leading a CP SD70ACu and a CSX "bright future" GE with a Canpotex train bound for Portland OR, rolling westbound along the Columbia River at Blalock OR, Oct 16 2022. #ArtGrossPhotography #UPRR #UnionPacific #EMD #ColumbiaRiverGorge #ColumbiaRiver #Oregon #PacificNorthwestRailroads #Trains #Railroads #Railroadphotography #trains_worldwide #railfanning #railfan #daily_crossing #trainspotting #railsupremacy #diesel_locomotive_shop #west_coast_rail #trainsofpnw #train_nerds #trb_express #railfans_of_instagram #railfannation #railmarkable #rsa_theyards #railways_of_america #pnw_rrshots #newtopographics #documentingspace
Priority merchandise from the Northtown Yard to Pasco, WA flies through the big Lake Park S curve with a pair of EMDX demo units leading the way.
New EMDX SD70ACe-T4s #7207 and 7205 lead KCS train MVNKC across the Piasa Creek viaduct between Godfrey and Delhi, IL. The units are on the return leg of their first revenue trip between Kansas City and East St. Louis after being delivered to KCS by NS. They'll make good time up to Roodhouse for a little work before striking west for Missouri.
In other news: with a little more undercutting of the bank by the creek this winter, that pesky tree may finally come down.
On December 8, 2018, EMD SD70ACe-T4 No. 3035 leads the last MRONY (Roper Yard in Salt Lake City to North Yard in Denver) freight at Blue Mountain grade crossing west of Eisele, Colorado. The long freight, powered by an all-EMD locomotive consist and officially symboled MRONY-07, drops downgrade wrapping itself over the mouth of Coal Creek Canyon, with the rear of the train still threading Tunnel 1 in the background.
With UP slowly implementing “Precision Scheduled Railroading,” the railroad announced that it is downgrading Roper yard, with manifest switching operations moving to Ogden, ending MRONY and MNYRO manifest freights. This will mean that Salt Lake to Denver traffic will now be running across the Wyoming “Overland” main line—throwing another dagger at the “Main Line Thru the Rockies.” There will still be tri-weekly MGJNY/MNYGJ freights between Denver and Grand Junction, but the Utah desert won’t see any UP manifest freights anymore.
That lead motor on the point may have some changes coming soon too, as many of UP’s SD70ACe-T4 locomotives are in storage, or heading there shortly. Reports are some of the most recently-delivered new units in the 3090 number series were immediately put into storage before turning a wheel in revenue service!
A single SD70ACe-T4 (CSXT 8903) is powering CN 327 as it approaches Coteau where it will set off cars.
Two different generations of EMDs sit at the fuel racks in Willmar yard. The warmer temps offered some reflection shots.
With CN's new SD75Acc rebuilds being broken into across the CN system, EMD sent 4 SD70Ace-T4's as collateral for the time being. These units are not allowed to lead on CN due to the lack of amenities for the crew in the cab. However, that wont stop a CPKC crew from eyeing one up, saying "ooo that's pretty", and take it out for a spin. On job C310, engineer Dan B enjoys his time in the fresh EMD as he slows his train on the approach to North Bend.
A pair of fresh EMDX SD70ACe-T4s lead KCS train M-KCVN through Hartford, IL on UP's Springfield Sub. This train represents one of the first, if not THE first, well-lit runs of these leasers on KCS, which will reportedly get a total of 30 units through early 2020.
Thanks to SS for the heads up and Troop 94 for concluding their flag-raising ceremony in a timely fashion. Me and the kid were able to intercept this train at Godfrey, then beat him to this overpass just north of Lenox tower. Unfortunately, he went into deep hiding at Venice yard and no further shots were possible.
CSX 8909 takes train O751 over Park of Commerce Blvd. as they head back toward the mainline with empty autoracks bound for Winston, FL.
O751 was an autorack turn shuttle between Winston, FL and Palm Center, FL. They would bring loads and retrieve empties which would go on train Q220. This train has since been abolished. A similar train, O760, was recently established to do this work although it is done in the evening and over night so a photo like this isn't possible anymore.
