NS SD60E #6908 rests as it awaits it's crew to arrive. Shortly after taking several photos of this locomotive set, a crew did show up to start a day of train service. This set also included SD60 #6734.
Afternoon thunderstorms are building as Norfolk Southern's safety train passes by Jefferson Street after a training event in East Point over the weekend. NS #911 & #5642 and its eight cars would make a right turn at Howell Wye to head north up the Piedmont.
CP coke empties head south using trackage rights over UP's Albert Lea Sub to Roseport. UP sent these former CNW SD60's to HELM in the early 2000's and were on lease to INRD at the time. Both engines eventually made it to NS and were rebuilt into SD60E's.
Pan Am Southern train 11R is seen here westbound at Zoar Road amongst some fall color. This is about as good as it gets on the west end regularly these days unless you get lucky with some SD40s on EDRJ leaving in daylight... I think winning the lottery might be more likely.
An unseasonably warm January day and a frozen Susquehanna River brought some great fog to the valley.
Freight train 39Q made a worthy prop as they stopped at CP Front Street on the Norfolk Southern Lurgan Branch.
The SD60E sat just long enough to allow me to get a couple of different angles as the wind pushed the fog across the river.

NS Mingo-Conway transfer 318 rolls east by the PRR-style mast signals in East Liverpool, Ohio, on May 23, 2021. This job has had SD60E's for the last several months, and it now seems to be going east out of Mingo late in the evening instead of mornings like it did earlier this year.
Got a chance to follow last Fridays 287 from Deerfield to Fishermans Lane before going into work. Here Flickr contributor Thomas Coulombe and I shot the NS First Responders SD60E leading a very long 5 car train of empty autorack a passing the former B&M Johnsonville tower which controlled the junction of the Troy Branch (The Original Fitchburg Railroad) and the current mainline. Note no photoshopping or stepping in others photos occurred here.
A trio of EMD SD40-2's lug a lengthy G70 local out of downtown Atlanta, GA on their way from Inman Yard to Industry Yard while NS #282 is seen coming into town off the Southern from Jacksonville. It was nice to see a solid set of SD40-2's while most other locals in town use Eco's or SD60E's.
Awaiting a release to continue on towards UP Armourdale Yard, NS Train 239 sits at 10th Street with the NS Honoring First Responders SD60E leading on the NS Kansas City District-BNSF Brookfield Sub.

A well-placed hole in the clouds works out in our favor for this shot of NS H07 from the Route 443 overpass between Rockville and Dauphin. At the time, this was the symbol for the westbound Enola-Lock Haven crew on the Buffalo Line. The lead unit was rebuilt into an SD60E a few months later, and is now NS 6998.
NS train 223 sports an SD60E leader and Soo SD60 #6027 in consist as it cruises past the south end of TRRA's Madison Yard at Brooklyn, IL on 13 November 2015. In minutes, the train will soon pass Willows Tower before heading to Coapman Yard for a track warrant east to Centralia.
A New York Susquehanna & Western GP18, pretty much a regular for the "WS" jobs in New Jersey, rest along side Norfolk Southern power that is for a Hanjin train at Little Ferry, NJ. Both locomotives survive to this day. The NS SD60 has been converted into an SD60E, #6970 and the 1802 resides on East Penn Rail maintaining its original number.

A little intel, hustle and brush clearing had me ready to rock as Norfolk Southern train 36A made its way east across the Pittsburgh Line with NS 9dash1dash1 leading. I had a small window to catch the first responder tribute unit at the old Pennsylvania Railroad bridge over the Sherman Creek in Duncannon, PA. I started to grin as the fire truck SD60E came rolling into frame; that grin was wiped from my face a short time later as a thin cloud rolled right across the sun, robbing me of bright sun. Oh well! Until next time.

NS SD40-2 #3307 & SD60E #7015 bring local train A25 up the hill past the Pilgrims Pride feed mill at Waco, GA.
SD60e #911 leads a long grain train over the massive Coopers trestle that is over top of Bramwell, Wv on the Pokey. May we never forget!

#145 ducks under the old C&NW bridge at Curran as the train rocks softly thru a 25 MPH slow order. The slow order is due to a very large soft spot in the roadbed west of the bridge that is in the process of being repaired prior to the arrival of a tie and surfacing gang.

C54 blasts off out of Mingo Junction with a pair of the usual junky 60Es as their power. In the back is the former Wheeling Pittsburgh steel works, once one of the largest steel companies in the country. Part of the site remains as an active mini-mill for JSW.

if there was anything good to come from the mess at East Palestine, it's detour trains on the Cleveland Line through Rochester, Yellow Creek, and Alliance where there are still a few sets of PRR position light signals. Normally it doesn't see much traffic. While this is not a detour, it came along while I was expecting one. I never heard a symbol but think it is C65. The SD60's seem to be regular power on these runs from Conway to Mingo Junction. This set of signals is in East Liverpool.
Behind a pair of NS SD60E's, thee local is slightly overpowered as it makes its way through Arcadia.
NS Veterans SD60E 6920 and First Responders SD60E 911 lead NS 957 east back into Decatur with the NS Holiday Train
The snow is falling lightly as Norfolk Southern SD60E 6952 (EMD SD60 originally blt. Sep. 1986 as CNW 8052 and rebuilt at Juniata shop) with a pair of GEs trailing leads Pan Am Southern train 16R (Norfolk Southern East Binghamton yard to Pan Am Ayer yard) out of the east portal of the 4.75 mile long Hoosac Tunnel at about MP 415.7 on Pan Am's modern day Freight Main, the famed former Boston and Maine Fitchburg Division.

NS "Honoring our Veterans" SD60E #6920 leads southbound train 301 through the Lenox Interlocker at Mitchell, IL.
Unfortunately, what should have been a beautiful sunny shot was destroyed by a fast-moving line of clouds that blanketed the entire area from about 30 minutes prior, to about 40 minutes after this was taken.
NS 265 led by SD60E #6942 is seen rolling west over the Green River in Greenfield, MA bound for Chicago.
Gainesville to Commerce, GA local P22 eases through the quasi-street running section through downtown Commerce on the 32-mile long Lula to Center branch line. This line is relatively busy, seeing a couple weekday daytime local trains, daily autorack trains for the Toyota distribution center, and frequent unit grain trains to/from the mill in Maysville.
NS 911 & NS 6162 leading a D36 South into Monticello, IL. NS 911 has been on the local pool for this line for a couple of weeks now. This was my 3rd time shooting it on D36 (this time I didn’t go to the area specifically for 911, it just happened to work out.) I was able to final nail him at this set of signals though. Here he is passing original Wabash signals. Was hoping to get a sun sucker hole here but it didn’t quite work out but the shot still turned out satisfactory.
Norfolk Southern local C65 (Conway, PA - Mingo Jct, OH) splits the PRR position light signals at MP 16.4 on the Cleveland Line. This section of the line is affectionately known as the "Bayard Branch" as it extends east from Bayard, OH to Rochester, PA. The Bayard is one of the last holdouts for PRR era PL signals on the entire NS system, offering a handful of wayside installs between Rochester and Yellow Creek. It usually is only home to this local and 62/63V trash trains. However, due to the East Palestine derailment and ongoing cleanup, NS has elected to run an additonal 6 pairs of trains daily over the line. If you want to shoot position lights, now is the time.
NS P61 navigates the junction at Salisbury on their way to Statesville. The train is leaving the Charlotte District and entering the Asheville District. A rebuilt SD60E provides power for this day's train.
Norfolk Southern train C65 (Conway, PA - Mingo Junction, OH) has the NS 911 "Honoring Our First Responders" SD60E leading as the train leans into a curve in Vanport. A pair of classic PRR position lights can be seen in the background guarding the line.
In May of 2015 Norfolk Southern’s Juniata Shops painted EMD SD60E 9-1-1 into a special livery honoring our country's first responders. The locomotive is leading train 956 on its maiden run from Altoona, PA to Spencer, NC, and is headed onto the Lurgan Branch at CP-Paxton in Harrisburg.

Norfolk Southern train 21T curves along the Susquehanna River and up to the Cannon interlocking on the Pittsburgh Line.
It's widely assumed the iconic Pennsylvania Railroad signal bridge will be coming down this year or next as NS moves forward with Positive Train Control signal upgrades on the line. The SD60 leader in the photo also seems like it's on borrowed time; it managed not to be chopped up and rebuilt as an SD60E in the now-stopped program in Altoona; with most of it's sister engines in storage this now-uncommon leader was a welcome sight leading a Kansas City-bound intermodal train.
Norfolk Southern's Track Geometry Train powered by an EMD SD60E loco on the Charleston's peninsula meets a CSX local working on a nearby Industry.
Norfolk Southern train C65 (Mingo Jct, OH - Conway, PA turn) leans into the curve at Industry, PA as it passes the "R8" milepost indicating 8 miles to Rochester, PA.
Normally I wouldnt touch a pair of 60E's with a 10ft pole but seeing the way they were oriented and in nice light, sure. Here's local job G87 with 27 cars on the ex Central of Georgia C-Line heading south to Carrollton, GA to swap trains with G01.
NS Local L-13 races west toward Bellevue on track 2 on a gorgeous summer evening.
The train is seen here at Bronson Rd. in Olmsted Twp. , Ohio
This train now runs after dark for the most part and of course no longer has these SD60M's in charge. Preferred power now is normally a pair of SD60E's.
An oddity for a short time on the Pittsburgh line was this helperset made up of two SD60E's. Here the pair shove an eastbound train through the now fallen signals in Portage, Pa.
On this Friday we recognize all EMS workers and volunteers. National EMS week draws to a close tomorrow, and today we thank every one of them. Here the Norfolk Southern first responders unit, # 9-1-1, leads export coal loads eastbound through Wabun, Va on the Whitethorne District (ex-VGN).
