Soo Line EMD SD60 No. 6057 leads an eastbound stack train through Kittredge east of Lenark, Illinois, on April 7, 1990. This location is at mile 114.9 on the former Milwaukee Road main line between Chicago and Savanna.
Powered by lone EMD SD60 No. 6067, Union Pacific’s short-lived Roadrailer departs the former Missouri Pacific Dolton intermodal yard on its trip from Chicago, Illinois, to Dallas, Texas, on December 3, 1988.
A pair of SD60 head into Superior from Duluth via the old Northern Pacific Ry Grassy Point drawbridge. To the right is the Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge that connects Duluth and Superior via U.S. Highway 2. The bridge's namesake, Richard Ira Bong, was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II who was named the United States' all-time "Ace of Aces". Bong was born in Superior.

Soo 6016 and 6036 head east across the Mississippi River on the Camden Bridge in Minneapolis in March 2001.
Not sure why an employee scrawled GE in the dirt of the 6016. Maybe they liked the beaver AC4400CWs that were becoming common on the former Soo, maybe not.
Another loaded Herzog train is seen hauling out of the siding at Moosehead, crossing over the East Outlet behind CP SD60 6251 and CMQ 9020. Finding out that this was running as I was getting off work this morning made it an easy choice to detour over to Moosehead instead of heading home.

Long a favored spot for eastbounds, it didn't disappoint today as 250 rounds the bottom of Moosehead Lake at Shadow Pond, about to pass the old Greenville station. CP SD60 6232 is leading CMQ 9017, dressed in Bangor & Aroostook heritage colors, and CP 6067 with a decent train, with stacks and racks up front.
Kicking up a nice cloud of snow behind it, 250 hammers down through Long Pond behind SD60 6232. I've been taking advantage of the frozen stream to trim up some of the brush that's been growing up along the tracks, and figured I might as well knock this shot off my to-do list at the same time.
CP ballast train 9WPA-11 takes the curve at Maple Lake on a beautiful spring day. A total of 5 foamers at this location for the SD60's. The train will meet an eastbound before starting to dump its ballast at the siding at South Haven.

Three Canadian Pacific SD60's lead train 3GPS, an empty ballast train toward Humbolt Yard. The train is seen here crossing the Crow River in Rockford, MN.
With one of CP's SD60-3s leading, and a "partly sunny" forecast for Jackman (I should know better by now), I decided to head up to shoot 250 this morning. Naturally, the sun disappeared behind a wall of clouds a few miles outside of Jackman, and I never saw it again, but fortunately the bright red of CP 6308 pops nicely in overcast conditions. It's seen leading CMQ 9020 and CP 6024 eastbound at Long Pond, with forty-seven cars trailing, including a bunch of empty wells on the rear (hopefully to come west loaded).
On a glorious last day of January, CP 251 hustles up the hill out of Eastman with a trio of SD60's leading 95 cars. Consist : CP 6232, CP 6262, CP 6258.
UP LTA41 rolls through Dakota, Minnesota during an untimely visit by clouds with a rebuilt SD60 and a GP60 for power. The train will pace the mighty Mississippi on CP trackage rights up to Winona where UP has a small switching enclave.
An ex-SOO SD60 once again leads J37, the Northfield Job, across the Mississippi River at Robert Street.
Back in the day when CP ran stuff like this all the time, the one thing that I could just never seem to get good shots of were SOO SD60s. Now they're all rebuilt and repainted, and I'm annoyed with seeing one leading CP 250 for the third day in a row instead of barns or Pac-Mans. A fair punishment for stupidly ignoring the Moosehead until after the CP takeover, I suppose. This hobby can be relentless!
4 WATCO SD60’s help assist tidewater loads on the steep climb to Elmore, WV, seen here at Sweeneyburg, WV as they cross over the high bridge. We’re on the former Virginian P-D district, where 2 separate 1.9% ruling grades put on a good show for loaded trains climbing out of the valley from Deepwater, WV.
A fresh Alton & Southern painted SD62 rebuild 2204 leads UP southbound train MBNAS out of Bloomington with over 80 cars for St. Louis. We are just north of Funks Grove, IL on UP's Springfield Sub, a long distance from home for this sharply painted EMD. Fortunately somehow it escaped inner city transfer service and was able to stretch its legs over the Alton Route with a fellow UP SD60 vet, still in faded armor yellow, it in itself a sight to behold.

UP LTA41 cruises up the former Milwaukee Road mainline towards Winona behind a rebuilt UP SD60 in the backdrop of Kings Bluff near Donehower, Minnesota. Lead engine #2198 was one of 85 EMD SD60s built for UP between 1986 and 1988; it was overhauled by both MEI and Jenks and is classified as an SD62E.

With a trio of Sd60's on point, Canadian Pacific's fifty nine car GPS ballast train, along with twenty two company cars on the headpin work upgrade towards Watertown with their eighty one loads on Wisconsin & Southern's Watertown Sub. With subsidies from the State of Wisconsin to rehab this line, one would think they would take better care of what our tax dollars did, but weed spraying must not be in the WATCO budget this year, with the new properties they are purchasing from the Canadian National.

Led by "fake" Susquehanna SD60 9014, CL-2 is seen lifting stone cars from the quarry in Jamesville. The power is sitting on top of the somewhat rickety looking trestle crossing Butternut Creek as the conductor knocks the brakes off. They'll add these cars to the headend of their train, then continue south for Cortland, with SY-1 shoving on the rear with SD45-2 3618.

Heavy snow fills the air in Jackman, Maine as CP 250 begins its slow roll through the scanners operated by the US Border Patrol behind a trio of EMD's. Lonnie Maves took a few quick photos in April 1993, as he guided the pair of Soo Line SD60's and train through the Reeseville Marsh. In this view, he is passing the 139 eastbound intermediate signal. In the distance, a Soo Line GP38-2 and some MOW trucks can be seen on the westbound main as the marsh fills with water.

A timely sucker hole illuminates the power on 9WMH-06 as they continue hauling out of the siding at Moosehead. CP 6251, a former Soo SD60, is leading CMQ 9020 with a forty car Herzog ballast train, with the intention of dumping rock between Moosehead and Jackman. Unfortunately, the 6251 would end up crapping out just west of Tarratine, eight miles west of here, and they would have to end up shoving back to Moosehead.
Judging by the turbulence in the clouds, a snowfall is on it's way. Canadian Pacific's eastbound coke train 804 will be long gone by the time the snowflakes start falling however, with it's pair of Soo Line SD60/SD60M locomotives leading out of Astico and into Reeseville.

After getting the light from the UP dispatcher, Canadian Pacific local H37 slowly rolls through downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota and heads across the Mississippi River on the Roberts Street Lift Bridge behind a pair of SD60's. The lift bridge, built in 1913, features a Pratt Through Truss vertical lift span that is approached by eight deck girder spans on the south end. UP is currently in the process of submitting applications and developing plans for the replacement of the structure.

B&P train RISI is screaming up the grade in the remote area between Johnsonburg and Mt. Jewett with 3 SD60's and an SD40. the train could be heard for 15-20 minutes before showing up. This is some of the most remote land that I've seen in the eastern US. I was waiting here at Fritz Rd for over an hour without seeing even one vehicle.
