Perfect mornings don't exist? Well I beg to differ. On a perfectly clear, crispy bitter cold -26 degree morning a quad of EMD products lead a southbound empty limestone train and due to the negative temps the engine exhaust is steaming away. The cold is something you can't explain until you experience it, only way to to describe it is Spicy cold, everything stings but its also extremely refreshing especially when there is no wind.

DMIR #405 crests Proctor Hill with an empty ore train that will be taken up to Fairlane the next day.

With a fresh crew on board, the deathstar trio heads south to the docks to unload taconite.

Several trains make moves in Proctor Yard in Proctor Minnesota including an ore train with an IC SD40-3 leading and a manifest with 2 ES44AC's leading

CN U716 crosses Highway 133 near the communuty of Payne, Minnesota anticipating a meet with an empty limestone train out of Fairlane just up the road at Kelsey.

The very next day, CN U716 blasts through Munger, Minnesota with empties for Fairlane on a foggy, rainy September morning.

The three Bessemer tunnel motors drag U719 across the Sax-Zim Bog at dusk with limestone loads for Minorca.

A trio of EMDs (IC 6251, CN 6021, IC 6264) spot ore cars at Dock 6 in West Duluth under a colorful sunset.

More fun with the new denoise tool... this thing has really got me hooked. The Missabe pair gets ready for a day of work in Proctor Yard in September of 2021, though it looks like it could be a scene from the actual Missabe days... of course if you ignore the modern vehicles, and the CN sign on the trailer.

With a half loaded train of blast furnace trim from Minntac in tow, CN R901 cruises south over the St. Louis River in Forbes, Minnesota as they approach the North Fairlane control point. The trio of IC SD40-3's are powering the train south after stopping at Keenan Yard to pick up the three trailing C40-8's to shuttle them to Proctor.

A few miles to the east of the shot at Stark, 394 is still moving right along as they pull out of a sag near Percy. Percy Peaks can be seen looming in the distance, just two of the many mountains in this area of northern New Hampshire. The tracks in the area have several sharp curves as they follow the Upper Ammonoosuc River, which for many years made six axle units undesirable on the SLR, but within the last year, they've replaced one of their slug sets with the QGRY 6904, a former CN SD40-3, and apparently haven't had any issues with it yet.

CN U719 emerges out of the fog as it sets out of Proctor with limestone loads for Minorca behind the infamous Bessemer trio.

A U717 is steaming away as they make their way up getting ready for lights to depart back to Proctor. Also on the move is U721 who will follow the pellets back home.

Drifting down the hill with the three amigos and a bridge full of car trouble. I figured I'd let this one bask on my hard drive for quite some time, but I haven't seen the shot from anyone else that day yet?

The Wayfreight is climbing up thru the Horseshoe near Merida handling 9-52 worked out just fine.having some cars in the curve. Would have climbed the hill but the ticks are bad out there. Didn't get bit, but pulled plenty off my clothing.

Heading south with Minntac pellets emerging from the fog rolling with the steam while on the throttle.

DMIR 409 leads ore loads South around the s-curve in Culver, MN.

Three DMIR SD40-3s in CN paint drag an empty taconite train over Proctor Hill as fall foliage starts to settle in. These engines were part of a batch of 20 SD40-3s rebuilt at the Missabe's Proctor shops from 18 ex-SP/SSW tunnel motors and 2 SD45-2s, fewer than half of which remain on the CN roster today. Proctor also rebuilt four tunnel motors for the B&LE (907-910).

CN U716 rounds the bend at Burnett, Minnesota with empty ore jennies for Fairlane. At Burnett, County Road 7 meets the Missabe Sub and paces it all the way north into the Iron Range.

Former L&N SD40 #8315 marches upgrade toward Eagle Creek Tunnel Summit with a rebuilt SD40-3 and 4900+ feet of train.

CN 2000 North starts its trip out of Proctor Yard with a 19:00 U719 for Minorca Mine on the evening of June 27, 2022. In the background, limestone trains for both Minntac and Utac are parked ready for their overnight trips to the Range.

These U719s got a late start running limestone this season to Minorca this year and began a little over a week ago. During the summer, all three CN-served taconite plants on the Iron Range receive stone trains from Duluth/Proctor making Proctor Hill and the Missabe Sub. a little bit busier.

A once common occurrence, a classic SD50 leads M350-16 north at Leipsic. They'll meet a southbound here before recrewing at Deshler.

IC SD40-3 6251, still wearing its white frame stripe (fairly rare), works Dock 6 in Duluth as the Algoma Spirit loads. Across the bay is American Century loading coal at MERC. Air Missabe One - 7/26/19

The one of maybe (3?) remaining SOO LINE painted GP38-2s left on Canadian Pacific’s roster, is seen here working the west of Canadian Pacific’s Bensenville Yard on one of the many RCO jobs, with its mate CP 5107 (SD40-3). After dragging a long cut out of the bowl, they begin shoving back to kick more cars and dip under the UP Milwaukee Sub, as seen in the background. Taken: 7-18-23

The 4448 is equipped with RCO, so it’s chances of getting back on the main are slim to none, it’s definitely seen better days but at least we can still see SOO paint in 2023.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, we find ourselves trackside for a rare Saturday run of G02 headed north to Griffin, GA from Macon, GA. As of October 2021, G02 operated Monday-Friday and departed Macon north/westbound in the morning bringing cars from Brosnan to the yard in Griffin, working locations such as Barnesville, GA along the way. In this capture, the pair of EMD SD40-2s have a good-sized consist headed north along US-41 in Collier, GA. The leader, NS 3567 has since been rebuilt to SD40-3 6419 and G02 is now a daily job from the looks of it.

It’s an early morning in northern Kentucky, as train J767-04 (Worthville, KY - Cincinnati, OH) screams out of the small town of Worthville, KY, crossing over onto the CSX LCL Sub with CSXT 8094 (Ex SBD SD40-2) leading a SD40-3. Seen here ducking under a unique modern signal bridge with CSX 1990s tri-light installations. Taken: 4-4-21

It's a hard pull through Culver, MN, where a stiff southbound grade and several curves have provided resistance to an Illinois transplant emanating the distinctive music from a choir of sixteen cylinders, 645 cubes apiece, singing in synchronous rhythm, the song of the Minnesota leg of the iron supply chain. Millions more marble-sized Minntac pellets of steaming taconite are headed towards Proctor where the winter suspension of the shipping season will force them into stockpiles. When warmer temperatures arrive in March, the pellets will be shipped across the Great Lakes to an eastern mill and transformed into another batch of USS product.

B&P Train X-RISI rolls through Ashford, New York behind four standard cab EMDs after the crew tied down the coal train at Salamanca and took this train up towards Buffalo.

At Ashford Junction, the B&O Rochester Sub (left) converged with the Third Sub (right) of the Buffalo Division which continued down to East Salamanca. North of Ashford, the B&O mainline to Buffalo was abandoned in the 90s due to a bad bridge at Springville. The current B&P routing into Buffalo utilizes the former Rochester Sub up to Machias where it jumps on the ex-PRR Buffalo Line for the final miles into Buffalo.

The sun finally came out in Burnett, and the trio basks in its glory heading south to Proctor.

Rochester & Southern GW1 with B&P SD40-3 #3064 leads a twin sister, three other units, 45 salt loads, and 23 general freight bound for the Norfolk Southern interchange at Silver Springs, NY. Here we see them pulling the ever increasing grade at Wheatland.

A shout out goes to Mike S for assistance during my quick trip to the Rochester area. Not a thing went as planned, starting with the Adirondack Railroad and it's power swap, the Finger Lakes not running and even this train not running on Monday, but all turned out well in the end.

Good things come to those who wait.

Canadian National train U730 rolls south on the Missabe Sub with a train of raw ore from the Thunderbird Mine heading for United Taconite at Fairlane to be processed. This days power was two EMDs.

Fresh pellet steam wisps off of the loaded taconite cars as Canadian National's U717 snakes its way out of the departure tracks at the Fairlane Taconite Plant in Forbes, Minnesota. A trio of classic EMD's lead the way as the train heads around the south leg of the connection to get on the main and head towards Proctor.

Another Missabe miracle happened on the Iron Range, this time with a trio of BLE tunnel motors. Though this train sat in Proctor for over 48 hours, the stars seemed to align as the train went south to Lakehead in perfect light. Shoutout to the Iron Range gang for info on this guy!

CSX SD40-2 #8008 & SD40-3 #4068 finally level out at Elizabeth, GA with a 102 car 9600' loaded autorack train Q241-21 after battling the grades from Emerson to Marietta. This pair sounded good!

Though not a favorite of some fans, a square cab SD40-3 leading D705 hurries west along the Plymouth Sub past the old signals that protect the east end of Fowlerville. While they aren't a traditional SD40 or SD40-2, on the Plymouth Sub, you take good light trains no matter the leader.
