Fritz Klimsch trained at the Königliche Akademische Hochschule für die bildenden Künste [Royal Fine Art Academy] in Berlin in the drawing class taught by the painter Ernst Hancke and in the modelling class under Albert Wolff. From 1887-1890 he was a pupil of Fritz Schaper's. While still a student, the young sculptor produced his first important work, winning awards and his first experience of official recognition.
On his wedding trip to Paris, Klimsch became acquainted with Rodin's work, which greatly impressed him with its liveliness of form and expression and left a lasting influence on him. Klimsch regarded Adolf von Hildebrand as second only to Rodin as the inspiration behind his art. Hildebrandt supplemented Rodin's liveliness with tectonics and statics, thus creating the balance Klimsch felt was so important to his own sculpture.
In 1898 Klimsch founded the Berlin Secession jointly with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow and was represented on a regular basis at the exhibitions the group mounted. Travels to Italy and Greece shaped his style. Klimsch was subsequently extraordinarily successful with portraits, monuments and funerary sculpture as well as female nudes. He did a great many portraits of distinguished representatives of cultural and political life, including Ludwig Thoma, Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and Paul von Hindenburg. In 1912 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts and in 1916 a senator of the Academy. Appointed to the Akademische Hochschule für bildende Künste in 1921, he retired in 1935 after heading the master class studio there. After the war the artist settled in the Black Forest to live in seclusion, producing from then on only a few works in small formats. In 1950 Fritz Klimsch was awarded the Große Bundesverdienstkreuz and died that same year.

It is well known that the lakes in the Upper Engadine freeze at an altitude around 1800 metres in winter, and I wanted to experience this for myself. I travelled there in mid-February in the most beautiful weather - and it was far too warm for the time of year! But the Lake Sils was frozen and I - like many others - hiked across it to the mouth of the Aua da Fedoz. There, however, the lake was open and formed gorgeous ice sculptures. I just had to make sure that the ice under my feet was stable enough, a cold bath would have been a bit unpleasant...
Es ist bekannt, dass die Seen im Oberengadin auf rund 1800 Meter im Winter gefrieren, und das wollte ich einmal selber erleben. Mitte Februar bin ich bei schönstem Wetter hingereist - und es war viel zu warm für die Jahreszeit! Doch der Silsersee war zugefroren und ich bin - wie viele andere auch - darüber gewandert bis zur Flussmündung der Aua da Fedoz. Dort war der See allerdings offen und bildete wunderschöne Eisskulpturen. Ich musste beim Fotografieren nur gut aufpassen, dass das Eis unter meinen Füssen stabil genug war, ein kaltes Bad wäre etwas unangenehm gewesen...

Autour de la place de la fontaine-aux-Lions-de-Nubie, Will Ryman érige sept sculptures de « têtes » jaune soufre, allant de trois à sept mètres de haut. De facture abstraite et dotée d’ouvertures de tailles diverses (ou « yeux »), chacune est délibérément imparfaite. Façonnées dans l’argile puis moulée dans la résine, les Heads portent des titres tirés de répliques d’En attendant Godot de Samuel Beckett (1948). Écrit à l’origine en français, puis traduit en anglais par Beckett lui-même en 1953, les thèmes universels et philosophiques de la pièce n’ont rien perdu de leur pertinence.

Mark Swan's bronze sculpture "Diva" at the Royal Horticultural Society Wisley Gardens in Surrey. There are plenty of sculptures in this vast area, and this one in particular, facing a pond and surrounded by benches where people can sit down and relax, produces an element of playfulness. Playfulness is important for horticulture which, at the RHS Wisley, people are a dead serious about.

The Striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum) is a small maple tree with a characteristic stripy bark. It is native to Northern America where it is also known as the Moosewood or Moose maple because moose (as well as deer and beavers) found its bark particularly tasty in winter months. This dolphin sculpture is made from recycled trash found along the beaches and shorelines in the surrounding area. It is part of an exhibit commissioned by the Texas State Aquarium from local artists and groups to highlight the problem of litter, especially on the very busy beaches. To us it is just an eyesore, to sealife it can be life ending.

Seen in the Slavery Museum which is part of the Maritime Museum, Albert Dock, Liverpool. The sculpture (2017) is made from various materials, including rum barrel hoops and the artist is Francois Piquet from Guadeloupe. I do not think that this sculpture needs much explaining. Fuji X100F.
