Richard Wong (C.I.BOYS)

Festive greeting cards and New Year pictures perpetuate popular stereotypes of engraving. In addition to magazines and newspapers, serigraphy is applied to our daily life on a more extensive basis. For example, the patterns printed on clothes, advertising signboards, posters, and even printed circuit boards all benefit substantially from the development of serigraphy.

In the field of contemporary art in Taiwan, traditional engraving is declining and seldom seen in exhibitions due to the increasing diversity of media adopted by contemporary artists and the emergence of digital engraving in recent years. As a sunset medium in the field of contemporary art though, engraving remains a significant landmark medium in contemporary art history. It is therefore necessary to bring engraving back to this field, after which contemporary artists can redefine its uniqueness in today’s art world. The consequence becomes apparent in the exhibition In Print We Trust ─ Artist Silk Screen Print Exhibition organized collaboratively by VT Artsalon, Yo Gallery and Tsubaki Print Studio, through which we attempt to redefine the role of engraving in the world of contemporary art.

This exhibition invites thirteen Taiwanese contemporary artists who are simultaneously the participants of “Taiwan Contemporary Engraving Project.” Utilizing the distinctive qualities of engraving, these artists not only offer refreshing interpretations on this medium, but also create their artworks in novel styles. The drafting, color separation and color correction of these original silk screen prints are done by these artists personally with the assistance from Tsubaki Print Studio. The participating artists include Tzeng Yong-Ning, Richard Wong (C.I.BOYS), Liao Zen-Ping, Kao Ya-Ting, Wang Liang-Yin, Hsu Wei-Ying, Su Meng-Hung, Chen Shiau-Peng, Yao Jui-Chung, Candy Bird, Fan Yang-Tsung, Huang Chun-Yuan and Yang Mao-Lin.

These participating artists are iconic figures in the field of contemporary art in Taiwan. Not only the creative media they specialize in are completely different from engraving, but also the styles of their artworks diverge and bear their respective characteristic signatures. We cannot refrain from speculating as to what kind of artworks these artists are ready to present in this exhibition when they break away from their familiar creative media.

My wife's old silkscreen needed to be repaired. New screens can run $35 for even a small frame, so I built one out of an old 2x4 and some Swiss voile (~$5/yd). I made two frames and have more than half the fabric left for more.

I wanted to let you know that I received my portuer bag last week and couldn't be more pleased. It's already gone for a 40 mile jaunt around the peripherals of Portland and seen a few good downpours on the way to work. Thanks for your amazing work! --Joe

I received the bag a few days ago, and have been using it on my commutes through Manhattan as well as on two half-day jaunts. It is a splendid bag: beautiful to look at, capacious, and very well fitted to the five-rail CETMA rack. It has already drawn compliments from other cyclists :) thanks! --Salim

The bags are working great! They pieces of art that are totally functional. I have been ridding down the California coast for the last ten days towards San Diego. I have been using the touring bag as a handle bar bag, works great. --Aaron
