Il Reattore n. 4 esplose pochi secondi dopo che fu premuto il pulsante di spegnimento istantaneo (detto AZ-5) che esegue la procedura SCRAM. Al posto dello spegnimento si ebbe un surriscaldamento improvviso ed il blocco della discesa delle barre di controllo a metà percorso. In pochissimi secondi la potenza crebbe rapidissimamente fino a oltre 30 GW, cioè 10 volte il massimo previsto, producendo grandi volumi di gas la cui pressione causò una esplosione che proiettò in aria il pesantissimo coperchio di cemento e acciaio (oiltre 1000 tonnellate di peso) il quale ricadde verticalmente sull'apertura, lasciando il recipiente scoperchiato. Subito dopo seguì una seconda, potentissima esplosione, causata dall'ignizione dell'idrogeno e dalla polvere di grafite espulsi dal reattore e mescolatisi con l'ossigeno dell'aria, che distrusse l'edificio. Fu seguita da un violento incendio della grafite contenuta nel nocciolo, in gran parte polverizzato ed espulso e completamente esposto all'atmosfera, incendio che coinvolse anche detriti e strutture adiacenti. Comparve in cielo il celebre "fascio di luce blu" ripreso anche nella mini-serie tv Chernobyl, è conosciuto con il termine di 'effetto Čerenkov'
Esso consiste nell'emissione di radiazione elettromagnetica da parte di un materiale le cui molecole sono polarizzate da una particella carica in moto che lo attraversa.
Una nuvola di materiale radioattivo fuoriuscì dal Reattore nº 4 e ricadde su vaste aree intorno alla centrale, contaminandole irrimediabilmente. Gli incendi delle strutture ebbero effetti catastrofici sulla contaminazione atmosferica.
Il rapido intervento dei vigili del fuoco dalle vicine stazioni di Pripyat e Chernobyl aiutò a domare in parte gli incendi, non potendo comunque spegnere il nocciolo nucleare e bloccare completamente l'emissione radioattiva; pertanto le autorità, nei giorni successivi, utilizzarono elicotteri militari per coprire il 'core' con sabbia e boro. Di fronte alla gravità estrema dei livelli di contaminazione dei territori circostanti, fu ordinata l'evacuazione (utilizzando oltre 1200 pullman civili) e in seguito il reinsediamento in altre zone, di circa 336 000 persone.

This was taken in Saburu Reserve on our way back to the lodge. The cheetahs were quite happily tucking in to their evening meal until a vehicle with a trailer turned up and spooked them. Apparently hunters used to tow trailers so they thought they'd better scram..

At the Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu, Nepal. You will find these eyes everywhere in Nepal. On shops, in shops, on t-shirts, on automobiles.... I mean everywhere. The biggest ones are on the Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu. Its a place where you find yourself suspended between tranquil peace and maddening chaos. On one hand those serene eyes on the huge multi-tiered lime-washed stupa seem to peer into your soul while you are distracted by these hundreds of thousands of colorful prayer flags contrasting against the bluest of skies. Add to it the milling crowds, the chattering tour guides, large flocks of pigeon made to scram by little kids and the cacophony from the hundreds of shops all around the stupa.
I have tried to capture a little bit of that ambivalence in the picture.

The Sofa Scram is a product designed to emit a noise whenever an animal climbs onto a surface. The device safely trains an animal to avoid these surfaces, through operant conditioning.
