Sketched at 6.00am in Sydney. Painted at 4.30pm in Canberra. One gearbox, one hire-car, two lunches (one at a Serbian Monastery) and many hours driving later.
"Scram!" Blue jays are big and bold and like to bully other birds around. Smaller birds scatter when the blue jays arrive.
LOL found these little cuties on the basement computer...the chickadee on the left was getting all puffy and huffy trying to shoe the other fellow away from the seeds..
Another still from a lengthy confrontation between these two birds.
The starling was only a few weeks old and totally fearless.
Lion ( Panthera leo ) cubs compete with each other for the available milk which the mother can produce.

"....no coat, a woven hair watchguard, and round blue sleeve garters with metal clasps.
I said: "Mr. Anson?"
"Two-o-four."
"He's not in."
"What should I do--lay an egg?"
"Neat," I said. "You have them all the time, or is this your birthday?"
"Beat it," he said. "Drift." He started to close the door. He opened it again to say: "Take the air. Scram. Push off" Having made his meaning clear he started to close the door again.
I leaned against the door. He leaned against it on his side. That brought our faces close together. "Five bucks," I said.
It rocked him. He opened the door very suddenly and I had to take a quick step forward in order not to butt his chin with my head.
"Come in," he said."

Three fawns are all ears as they alert for their old Doe's 'hoof stamp' to signal that it's time to scram...
Common and abundant (unfortunately). Overpopulation in their herd probably means many will not survive next Winter. Habitat succession and changes no longer sustain...

This beautiful brute stood still long enough that I could zoom in to take a closer look. The only bears we saw on the Alagnak River that were not battle scarred were some (but not all) sows, cubs and sub-adults who knew to scram. It looks like this bear is lucky to have his left eye.
This is like the Chilly Willy of swallows. Born into a species that lives in big, crowded groups, this disgruntled swallow just wants some alone time.

I would have given my two front teeth for more light that morning! But you take what nature gives you.

Mountain goat societies are matriarchal, meaning females are the dominant sex. They maintain a strict hierarchy within the herd and frequently use aggressive lunges, chases, or horn-hooking threats to defend their personal space, prime feeding spots, or their kids from lower-ranking nannies.
An unfortunate twist to this picture. The nanny being chased away was standing where the little one is currently standing before this pair arrived. She was minding her own business nibbling on some tasty grass when the little one approached her innocently curious. Mom got wind of this and immediately went into charge mode and chased her off.
I have since watched this solo nanny observing the mothers from a distance careful to keep her distance.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of a visit from outta-towners Reco (all the way from Seoul), Gans and Eneos.
Ok, he's not a bird, but is definitely first to the feeder. Because we have this raccoon problem, we no longer fill our feeder, we just put some seed out every morning on the 2 side screens and when it's gone, it's gone for the day..
This raccoon lives down under our deck, as have several generations, and he is aways the first to arrive...driving my inside dogs absolutely mad. He scrams when we open the door, but he's always first!
Shot through a very dirty kitchen door window :-)
"Livin' the dream, huh?"
"Depends on the dream."
Feeling uninspired lately. I've fallen into a funk where I feel like I have to take pictures for my 52 weeks project: I'm so busy even that feels like a huge ordeal, I can't even imagine how nuts it is for people who do 365's.
It's freezing out: so, so cold, so we only took a couple of pictures, then scrammed.
I've been wanting sparklers for ages to do long exposures with, and on spring break, I found some giant packs of them at a Nevada gas station, and I knew it was fate. :)

There once was a sweet little lamb
Who found herself in a real jam
The flowers she chewed
Were her favorite food
But then Mary just told her to scram

A female Clouded Sulphur (Alba) butterfly bumps a poaching male Clouded Sulphur (Alba) off her favorite field Daisy.
Somewhat common and abundant. The "Alba" form is considered less common than its more yellow counterpart.
Of course this is Little Buddy's wife. She is very friendly. I think it's really funny that she just keeps on eating no matter what I am doing as long as she is in an authorized area for squirrels. Somehow, she has figured out how to get on the main bird feeder which is off limits to squirrels. If I so much as look at her out the window or open the door she scrams quickly. She knows she is not supposed to be on that feeder. (The one she is on is okay) Of course if she is on the main feeder, that's my clue her authorized ones need refilled.
