This scorpion, which was 3cm long when fully intact, crept out of my bag following a trip to Argentina. I had what looks like a bad reaction to an insect bite on my should, but as other bites had not reacted it seemed a bit strange. I suspect that this little creature was living in my bag for a few days and decided to sting me after creeping into my tent, whilst I was camping in Patagonia.

Scorpions are supposed to be pretty rare in Patagonia, I am pretty sure the sting of this tiny one isn't fatal.

Scorpion flies are members of the Mecopteran order encompassing some 550 species worldwide. In the UK there are several similar species in the genus Panorpa distinguished by the pattern of spots on the wings. Males have a remarkable 'scorpions tail' which combined with the long beak gives these flies a bizarre alien like appearance. Despite their appearance these flies are entirely harmless, spending their time scavenging in hedgerows and other vegetation, often robbing spider webs.

This little fella, about 6cm long, was on our windowsill. I caught him and fed him some cheese. He was very edgy and stung it a few times. I took him away and let him go a fair distance away!

Det finns ungefär 1500 olika arter av skorpioner. Samtliga skorpioner är poikiloterma (kallblodiga). I förhållande till sin storlek rör de sig jämförelsevis snabbt, ofta även åt sidorna och baklänges, och håller då svansen böjd uppåt och framåt över ryggen, med svansens gadd färdig till en stöt.
