I love my dreams
I said, a winter morn'
To the practical man
And he, in scorn
Replied
I am no slave of the ideal
But as all men of sense
I love the real
Poor fool, mistaking
All that is and seems
I love the real
When I love my dreams
Poem from Fernando Pessoa and lyrics from "I Love My Dreams" by Alexander Search/Salvador Sobral

I can see what they meant: his unwinking
Outrageous eye laughs to scorn any notion
Of change or escape, and a silent

Echoes that laugh...

Ramsau is a German municipality in the Bavarian Alps. It is located in the district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, close to the border with Austria, 35 km south of Salzburg and 150 km south-east of Munich. It is situated north of the Berchtesgaden National Park.
Ramsau is famous for its high mountains, including the third highest mountain in Germany, the fabled Mount Watzmann (2713 m), and for the Lake Hintersee.
Ramsau is one of the most picturesque villages in Germany. The church of Ramsau is often on postcards, typically captured from the "Malereck" (literally painter's corner) or "Malerwinkel" (painter's eye, or painter's view).

Defeat
BY KAHLIL GIBRAN
Defeat, my Defeat, my solitude and my aloofness;
You are dearer to me than a thousand triumphs,
And sweeter to my heart than all world-glory.
Defeat, my Defeat, my self-knowledge and my defiance,
Through you I know that I am yet young and swift of foot
And not to be trapped by withering laurels.
And in you I have found aloneness
And the joy of being shunned and scorned.
Defeat, my Defeat, my shining sword and shield,
In your eyes I have read
That to be enthroned is to be enslaved,
And to be understood is to be leveled down,
And to be grasped is but to reach one’s fullness
And like a ripe fruit to fall and be consumed.
Defeat, my Defeat, my bold companion,
You shall hear my songs and my cries and my silences,
And none but you shall speak to me of the beating of wings,
And urging of seas,
And of mountains that burn in the night,
And you alone shall climb my steep and rocky soul.
Defeat, my Defeat, my deathless courage,
You and I shall laugh together with the storm,
And together we shall dig graves for all that die in us,
And we shall stand in the sun with a will,
And we shall be dangerous.
Early one morning, just as the sun was rising
I heard a maid sing in the valley below
"Oh don't deceive me, Oh never leave me,
How could you use, a poor maiden so?"
Remember the vows that you made to me truly
Remember how tenderly you nestled close to me
Gay is the garland, fresh are the roses
I've culled from the garden to bind over thee.
Here I now wander alone as I wonder
Why did you leave me to sigh and complain
I ask of the roses, why should I be forsaken,
Why must I here in sorrow remain?
Through yonder grove, by the spring that is running
There you and I have so merrily played,
Kissing and courting and gently sporting
Oh, my innocent heart you've betrayed
How could you slight so a pretty girl who loves you
A pretty girl who loves you so dearly and warm?
Though love's folly is surely but a fancy,
Still it should prove to me sweeter than your scorn.
Soon you will meet with another pretty maiden
Some pretty maiden, you'll court her for a while,
Thus ever ranging, turning and changing
Always seeking for a girl that is new.
Thus sang the maiden, her sorrows bewailing
Thus sang the poor maid in the valley below
"Oh don't deceive me, Oh never leave me,
How could you use, a poor maiden so?"

St. Patrick’s Day: With an Irish Shamrock
By Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna
From the region of zephyrs, the Emerald isle,
The land of thy birth, in my freshness I come,
To waken this long-cherished morn with a smile,
And breathe o’er thy spirit the whispers of home.
O welcome the stranger from Erin’s green sod;
I sprang where the bones of thy fathers repose,
I grew where thy free step in infancy trod,
Ere the world threw around thee its wiles and its woes.
But sprightlier themes
Enliven the dreams,
My dew-dropping leaflets unfold to impart:
To loftiest emotion
Of patriot devotion,
I wake the full chord of an Irishman’s heart.
The rose is expanding her petals of pride,
And points to the laurels o’erarching her tree;
And the hardy Bur-thistle stands rooted beside,
And sternly demands;—Who dare meddle wi’ me?
And bright are the garlands they jointly display,
In death-fields of victory gallantly got;
But let the fair sisters their trophies array,
And show us the wreath where the shamrock is not!
By sea and by land,
With bullet and brand,
My sons have directed the stormbolt of war;
The banners ye boast,
Ne’er waved o’er our host,
Unfanned by the accents of Erin-go-bragh!
Erin mavourneen! dark is thy night;
Deep thy forebodings and gloomy thy fears;
And O, there are bosoms with savage delight
Who laugh at thy plainings and scoff at thy tears!
But, Erin mavourneen, bright are the names
Who twine with the heart-vein thy fate in their breast;
And scorned be the lot of the dastard, who shames
To plant, as a trophy, this leaf on his crest!
Thrice trebled disgrace
His honours deface,
Who shrinks from proclaiming the isle of his birth!
Though lowly its stem,
This emerald gem
Mates with the proudest that shadow the earth!

William Shakespeare - 1564-1616
To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.—Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Sleep Eden sleep
My fallen son
Slumber in peace
Cease the pain
Life's just in vain
For us to gain
Nothing but all the same
No healing hand
For your disease
Drinking scorn like water
Cascading with my tears
Beneath the candle bed
Two saddened angels-in heaven, in death
Now let us lie
Sad we lived sad we die
Even in your pride
I never blamed you
A mother's love
Is a sacrifice
Together sleeping
Keeping it all
No sympathy
No eternity
One light for each undeserved tear
Beneath the candle bed
Two souls with everything yet to be said

Markers, white, in far flung fields -
anger's harvest lined in rows;
depict the effort to hold peace
as precious, shattered I suppose.
Flowers of white, resulting wrath
of wanton bullies on World's stage -
a bigger sandbox for their play.
Yields them scorn in history's page.
Sometimes we learn from past mistakes
but all too quick the battle-cry
is "Crush the foe, forget concord!"
… I watch the crosses multiply …

This alley just off of Haight Street is a gallery for the graffiti artists. I've always been intrigued by this art form and find it to be quite beautiful especially in places where the artists are allowed to carry out their craft without criticism or scorn. The artists in this case were so conscientious that they even painted the trash receptacles. I wonder if there are house painting companies that specialize in the graffiti look.

King of village flowers!
Each day is coronation time,
You have no humble hours.
I like to see you bring a troop
To beat the blue-grass spears,
To scorn the lawn-mower that would be
Like fate’s triumphant shears.
Your yellow heads are cut away,
It seems your reign is o’er.
By noon you raise a sea of stars
More golden than before.

22 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
2 O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.
10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
19 But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
23 Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
28 For the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is the governor among the nations.
29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

I scorned this shot for a long time. I thought it was very overdone. Every Chicago photographer has taken this picture probably at least 10 times. I also couldn't spend the time to keep going back to this spot, always hoping for the right weather leading to a unique shot.
Eventually, I gave in. I like this picture. The reason I think this shot works for me is because it was taken with a wide angle lens, which allowed the lights reflected in the water to stretch further than I have seen before. I had to get down within an inch of the water, and I used the ground as a tripod -- again. I really should take it with me more often. Oh well.
This classic song has been banned by several radio stations for being inappropriate in the "me too" era. The equally classic animation "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" has also received scorn for all kinds of conceived nonsense like bullying and racism. A church placed the baby Jesus in a cage in their nativity scene to make some kind of point about immigration.
Merry Christmas from the "politically correct."
When you think of heroism, you might think of dramatic acts of bravery, such as rushing into burning buildings. More simply, heroism consists of putting others first, even at your own peril. To be heroic is to be selfless in the face of danger, not being fearless, but recognizing the threat , weighing the costs, and deciding to do what it takes to overcome the challenge. 19th Century lawyer Robert Green Ingersoll said it well: “When the will defies fear, when duty throws the gauntlet down to fate, when honor scorns to compromise with death — that is heroism.” The opposite of heroism is cowardice. All that we are being sold today in the media is a message that says "Be safe and stay home." Yet the world is still full of people who will not conform to society's expectations. They routinely display in their every day behavior and way of living the qualities of a hero or heroine. They face the risk, not foolishly, but calculating a greater benefit. They have that quality of spirit that enables them to face danger by overcoming fear. Heroes are not simply the obvious ones who are constantly lauded in the media, such as the first-responders and healthcare workers. Certainly they deserve our respect, admiration, and support. There are also millions of other people in critical jobs who keep our lifeline of supplies open , who make the things we need to survive and deliver them. They do so at just as great a risk as the more obvious heroes. And some of them pay the ultimate price. Then there are the quiet heroes, who never seek the limelight, whose small acts of kindness and thoughtfulness towards others, friends or strangers, would likely go unnoticed unless we stop a moment and look for them. Some of these hit quite close to home, but no names are required. There is the gentleman at the checkout who without hesitation chose to give a pack of toilet paper to a complete stranger, simply because he had two and the stranger had none. I know a very selfless young lady, who insisted on picking up flowers, a card, and a balloon for a good friend who has had her own health challenges. There was no need for an extended visit or huge media event. It was described to me as a "drive-by birthday party". It was a brief, quiet, but very meaningful, surprise gesture of friendship and love. My memory of the look on the face of the young recipient still brings tears to my eyes even weeks later. This is the quiet heroism we should be focused on acknowledging, sharing, and emulating. Yes, we should know that there are real risks, but we must overcome our fears. Stop cowering and depending on "heroes". Become one yourself. Become a hero to your family and for your community. Be excellent to one another. Spread heroism like a virus. We can be heroes for just one day . . . today and every day.
I have loved this David Bowie song since I heard it in the movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". This is a very good cover by Hollywood Vampires. Everyone sing along!

As a long-time sufferer from M.E. I appreciate the chance to draw people's attention to what has always been a post-viral phenomenon. Any virus can leave sufferers with long lasting after-effects. For too long the medical community has belittled and scorned M.E. I was told that either I should go buy a new dress or get a new haircut, and snap out of it!
After Covid has revealed the reality of just what long-term damage can and does arise from viral infections, we all hoped that at last lessons could be learned from the mis-treatment of M.E. sufferers. But there are already hints of impatience creeping into the conversation as no easy solutions have been found - so let's hope that it won't be back to the old medical stand-by "blame the patient".
If you are interested I wrote about the experience of M.E. in 2019, before the pandemic

“It is becoming fashionable to scorn the idea of sin in society. The impact of humanistic thinking is to belittle the concept that man is corrupt. Psychologists and psychiatrists would persuade us that people really are not responsible for their wrongs. Rather, the view of sociologists is that the environment is all wrong.
Their cry is, 'Change society and you will get better men and women'. It simply does not happen.
Christ's call is, 'Change men and women and you will get a better society'. This does work. It always has.”

As I wandered the forest,

Singing a song.
"I slept in the earth
In the silent night,
I murmured my fears
And I felt delight.
"In the morning I went
As rosy as morn,
To seek for new joy;
But oh! met with scorn."

'The Tardy Season'
The first day of spring is naught but a date,
Whose verdant promises are too often late.
Hell hath no fury like winter scorned,
Whose final passing is seldom mourned!
Has winter no shame as it holds fast?
How often shall it grant its final blast?
Where did spring go that it's so late,
Did it go and suffer some tragic fate?
Such cruel climes afflict the North,
Clever beasts do not venture forth.
These hibernate through winter’s worst
And emerge blinking when spring’s burst.
Come now spring, you truant season
And melt the drifts and end the freezin’.
Let go winter, for you are very unwanted,
Though by pleading, you are ever undaunted.
Doesn’t winter know it has overstayed,
Whilst winter weary souls are long dismayed?
Good bye, winter, go and take your snows,
And flee farther north where the north wind goes.
Spring is more than just a season.
To many hearts, spring is the reason
For hope itself in times to rue
Proving darkness passes when winter’s through.

Welcome to the great republic
Guess I should show you round
Where once I was a King, and now I am a clown
The love that we once shared, made a King of me
But now you're gone, but now you're gone
All I face is poverty
King without a heart, King without a hope
King without a woman baby
Oh, I'm a King without a crown
King without a heart, King without a hope
King without a woman baby
Oh, I'm a King without a crown
Hell hath no fury (Hell hath no fury)
Like a woman scorned (Like a woman scorned)
But heaven don't boast, no heaven don't boast
The jewel, the pretty jewel I just pawned (I just pawned)
Every cloud has a silver lining (Every dog has its day)
Oh, but I guess the sun stopped shining (shining, shining)
On the day you went away
King without a heart, King without a hope
King without a woman baby
Oh, I'm a King without a crown
King without a heart, King without a hope
King without a woman baby
Oh, I'm a King without a crown
King without a heart, King without a hope
King without a woman baby
Yes, I'm a King (King), King without a crown
