At one time confined to Wales as a result of persecution, a reintroduction scheme has brought red kites back to many parts of England and Scotland. Central Wales, central England - especially the Chilterns, central Scotland - at Argaty and along the Galloway Kite Trail are the best areas to find them.

In 1989, six Swedish birds were released at a site in north Scotland and four Swedish and one Welsh bird in Buckinghamshire. Altogether, 93 birds of Swedish and Spanish origin were released at each of the sites, with the last birds released in 1993 in Scotland and 1994 in England.

The first successful breeding was recorded at both sites in 1992, and two years later kites reared in the wild themselves reared young for the first time. Successful breeding populations have become established in both locations.

These early successes justified the next stages of the programme with the aim to produce five self-sustaining breeding populations of red kites in Britain by year 2000. The eventual aim is to ensure that the red kite breeding population expands to colonise all suitable habitat throughout the UK.

Gardens of Great Britain – National Open Garden Scheme - Furzelea

This is another series of photographs taken in the many National Open Gardens we have visited over a period time. It never ceases to amaze how many gardens there are just for Essex and the variety of planting they show, long may it continue. The Yellow Book lives.

This is the third and final of three postings.

CSX I008 comes out of the siding at CP-22 in Blauvelt, NY, with Union Pacific SD70ACe 8518 leading. Its one of the first engines to receive the railroad's updated paint scheme that involved moving the American flag onto the cab as opposed to the long hood.

On July 25, 2022, Union Pacific formally announced a makeover of its classic Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray paint scheme. The first unit to receive the new look was SD70ACe No. 8620. Its first assignment was to lead the MNPRO 25 (North Platte - Roper) manifest, pictured in Roy, Utah on the Salt Lake Subdivision the morning of July 28, 2022.

Ok, if I could get Mom to go there, then I lure Dad to that other spot, I think I could trick them into playing!

Ah the scheming that goes on in a dog's mind.

Four 6,000 horsepower Electro-Motive Division SD90MAC-H locomotives, along with EMD’s test car, head up to East Portal, Colorado, for some high-altitude testing on January 30, 1998. Leading the way is EMD No. 8504, decked out in a special scheme for EMD’s 75th anniversary that was later affectionately nicknamed “Shamu” by some. The other three SD90MAC-Hs that are fully-painted for Union Pacific are Nos. 8505, 8502 and 8503 (west to east). After some stationary testing at both East Portal and Plainview, the quartet will be further tested on tonnage between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel.

Arriving in Meriden is Amtrak shuttle train 479 with P42DC 108 in the Phase VI 50th Anniversary paint scheme.

Of the many new UP paint scheme variants, the 7271 is wearing what may be about the best one; Wings, and no flag. Obviously, I'd be pro-silver trucks, red frame stripe, and green nose anti-skid, but this is about as good as it gets these days.

This unit was released from GE in November 2022 (flic.kr/p/2nXVwn8), but still looks like it's fresh out of the shop here in early March of the next year.

Here, we see this C44ACM rebuild leading the GVASAL 28, a grain train from Avon, IA to Shamrock,KS. "Shamrock" was a location that I couldn't find immediately, but upon further investigation, I found that UP puts it between Pratt and Liberal, KS, and potentially to the east of Arkalon?

Regardless, this particular shot was taken at MacVicar Ave. in Topeka on UP's Topeka Sub.

Some developers a while back proposed to install artificial islands in this bay (Belle Greve) for "exclusive" luxury living and shopping. Local protest and the economic meltdown in the West seemed to have stopped this idea...

The railfan coveted three scheme lashup is a true treat and quite the rare event on the Alaska Railroad. In the decade I lived in Alaska I can count on one hand the number of times I got to photograph it happening. By this late date there were only three GP40-2s in the old 1970s black and gold scheme with the rest of the fleet wearing the current 'Baby Mac' paint and the only units left liveried in the 1980s 'Alaska Bold' scheme were GP38-2s that were mostly relegated to yard service in Anchorage and Fairbanks. But once in a while one would get out on the road such as happened on this picture perfect late winter day.

The geep trio are leading a 120N from Whittier to Anchorage seen emerging from the north end of the 13,338 ft long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel at MP F5.6 on the Alaska Railroad's Whittier Branch.

The tunnel which is the only land based access to the important port community of Whittier on Prince William Sound is a marvel of engineering. Originally built by the US Army and opened in 1943 it was converted to dual use more than two decades ago and is the longest shared highway/rail tunnel in North America and is essentially a 2.5 mile long grade crossing.

For those of you interested in learning more about this fascinating tunnel click here to visit the Alaska state DOT's official web site on the tunnel:
