L'église, devenue le "carré Sainte Anne" est aujourd'hui désacralisée. Elle avait été construite sous le Concordat, au 19ème siècle, comme de très nombreuses églises en France. C'est le maire, Jules Pagézy (maire de Montpellier de 1852 à 1869, dont la politique haussmannienne a durablement modifié l'aspect du centre de Montpellier.), qui avait décidé sa construction, afin de marquer la silhouette de la ville et de répondre à l'accroissement de la population.
