After Several Months Of Ill Health,Bad Weather And Loss Of Interest, I Was Finally Persuaded To Venture Out By My Good Friend Kevin Shaw, Ended Up In Hebden Near Scale Haw Force In North Yorkshire, Which Was Ideal As It Involved Very Little Walking.. This Might Be A Nice Little Waterfall To Visit In The Autumn Where More Colour Will Be Available. Thanks For Taking The Time To View My First Post In (Unbelievably)Eight Months.

The scale in my local chemist, Cloyne Care Plus. It is fairly accurate, gives same weight as my home digital scale. It has a coin slot, but no money needed. These large stand on scales are becoming rare, this one is before the Euro. It offers weight in stones = 14 pounds for each.

The Pine Ladybird (Exochomus quadripustulatus) in the top of this photo is seen alongside the more commonly seen 7-spot in my previous photo to help give a sense of size to it at just 4mm long. By stopping to photograph that I then noticed another Pine lower down. Running around the trunk just below that was a tiny black spot, effectively a ‘full stop’ with legs.

It came right up to the other for me to get this shot showing the massive size difference. A quick bit of online research and a back of the camera shot to someone else helped confirm it was Scymnus nigrinus (also known as Black Ladybird or Black Scymnus).

One of the group known as the Inconspicuous Ladybirds the UK field guide table shows between 1975 and 2015 there are only 25 records of this species. The only other Northumberland record is from back in the 1980s. Some close searching of my patch around where I found this first one then saw me find 3 more so there is probably a sizeable population here.

Alexander Y Type bodied Leyland Leopard as issued by EFE in Stagecoach stripes. Model has had its Western names removed and new style corporate ones added. Its new national fleetnumber of 25785 is in situ and a bit of weathering to tone the clinical white down finishes the job.

The view you get to see through view finder is even more stunning. Making macro is always difficult, fun and exciting.

Birds with scales

Although this may come as a surprise to you, but birds also have scales, they just don’t cover the entire body. A bird’s main characteristics is its feathers, which cover the entire body but the legs. A bird’s legs are covered by keratine-formed scales. Depending on the species, these scales can be found on the fingers and tarsals, or they can extend to the ankle joint, whereby the whole leg is covered with scales.

Woodpecker

Under the name woodpecker you can find several bird species order Piciformes. These birds can be found all over the world, known for their characteristic beak, which they use to drill holes into wood to feed. Like other birds, a Woodpecker’s legs are covered in overlapping scales.

Fun fact: they have long sticky tongues which they use to extract food from tree trunks.

While in the middle of a new project, it became clear that a stairway was necessary for part of the model.

I turned to the Web and studied how real stairs are constructed.

Gotta love the Web!

The most important part, I found out, was keeping everything inline and symmetrical. Enter the "jig" that the stairs were built upon. Nothing fancy; just a block of wood that was the correct width and length.

By taping the stringers [ the side part of the stairs ] to that wood, everything remained stable so the stair treads could be glued in place. Once everything was dried and set, the whole unit could be removed without any problems; and it's surprisingly sturdy.

Just wanted to share this!

By the way, the wood I use is Basswood. Stronger and more dense than balsa wood.

Inside an abandoned market booth, a forgotten shopping scale lies on the floor, dust-covered and silent, like the last trace of something that once was.

Added 2 new 50' DAF flat cars to the NASA fleet, I've got a few possible plans for these: Titan SRB segment flatcars (working on getting these designed but it will take some time), a fictitious V-2 (or bumper, I haven't decided yet) transport consist or having these just be spacers. My next project that randy will be doing for me is related to this (FM is on the list but not this season) Any guesses?

Not as sophisticated as Sariel's scaler - however, quite helpful to get correct proportions when building minifig scale vehicles. You just need a tablet with a blueprint on its screen zoomed to the proper scale (here I'm using a dummy for obvious reasons). Starting point is always the wheelbase wherefrom all the other measurements can be deduced by checking the silhouette.

H1 wheelbase = 3302 mm; wheelbase of the model = 96 mm (12 studs); scale = 1/34,4
