View of island sandstone carved by Nature

Gabriola Island is one of the Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia, in British Columbia (BC), Canada, lying about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Vancouver Island, to which it is linked by ferry. It covers 57.6 square kilometres (22.2 sq mi) and has a population of roughly 4,200.

The first European visit to Gabriola was by the Spanish schooner Santa Saturnina under José María Narváez in 1791. Narváez is said to have given the name Punta de Gaviola to the southeastern end of the island and that over time Gaviola was corrupted into Gabriola and applied to the whole island.

The earliest archeological record on Gabriola is a cave burial dated to about 1500 BCE, but sites on nearby Valdes Island and other Gulf Islands have been found to date to at least 3000 BCE.

There are lovely secluded forest trails, beautiful beaches and a scattering of art studios, shopping, and even an Alpaca farm where these animals provide wool for an amazing array of handmade garments and accessories in the shop.

Quartzose sandstones in the Cambrian of Minnesota, USA.

Outcrops of the Jordan Sandstone occur in eastern & southeastern Minnesota; northeastern Iowa; and in western, southern, and eastern Wisconsin. The Jordan Sandstone represents an ancient shallow marine siliciclastic succession deposited on the eastern, southern, and western sides of the Wisconsin Dome (see map in Tape et al., 2003). Sedimentary structures present in Jordan Sandstone outcrops indicate that quartz sand deposition occurred in the ocean from below fair-weather wave base up to beach facies and even in subaerial back-beach dune facies.
