East and West Mitten Buttes are two distinctive geological features found within Monument Valley in northeast Navajo County, Arizona. The summit of West Mitten Butte is 6,176 feet (1,882 m) in elevation and East Mitten Butte is 6,226 feet (1,898 m). The two form a triangle with Merrick's Butte about 2/3 of a mile to the south.

The buttes are made of three principal rock layers. The lowest layer is Organ Rock Shale, the middle de Chelly Sandstone and the top layer is Moenkopi Shale capped by Shinarump Siltstone. The buttes are also part of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.

Last year I climbed Mt Beerwah, the highest of the Glasshouse Mountains, via a new route for me and down the normal route.

The eastern pier of the Victoria Bridge, also known as the Nepean River Rail bridge, near Penrith is built of Sydney Sandstone. This is the original 1867 rail bridge and is now a road bridge. It is heritage listed. The replacement 1907 dual track rail bridge can be glimpsed behind.

The first time I visited Seamill beach, I found this huge lump of sandstone poking through the sand, pretty much on it's own as far as I can tell as there are no other rocks that look even remotely similar.

I knew I wanted a decent shot of it, but time and time again when I went back something was wrong. The tide was too far out, the light was in the wrong direction, the light was too weak, the light was too strong, there was no bloody light sometimes!

Patience pays off though, and I got good conditions for about 3 minutes this evening, so I'm quite happy. I just love the way the rock glows in the sun.

There's something about bouldering at Pine Mountain. Whether it's the sandstone, the clean air, the pines, or the insane sunsets, the place is just magical.

Here, josh is just about to top out on Picnic(V4) while submersed in the glow of another beautiful sunset.

Hastings church road, sandstone wall around the church showing signs of erosion

Hey Friends! I am having a great week in WV on a mission trip with my church. On the way up I took them to sandstone falls. I also got to get a few decent shots as well! Sandstone Falls is truly a beauty and one of my goals is to get a nice shot here at sunset. Look forward to being back on next week. I found some wi fi and a couple spare minutes to share this with you. I'll catch up with your photos soon! Have a great day!

In Nevada's Valley Of Fire State Park there are several interesting geologic features. One such feature is a group of sandstone rocks that have been eroded by wind over time into rocks that look like beehives.

This is a polished face of the speicimen that nicely shows the grains of pebbles.

A very pebble rich portion of the Tapeats Sandstone

Locality: Near Payson, Arizona

Note: Two "Interesting Grains" are identified on the image. They are interesting because they are crystals. Crystal are not commonly found in coarse grained detrital rocks. The reason being is that their environment of deposition is typically high energy as in beaches or streams. Bouncing or rolling along with the other grains in the sediment would round off the points in a crystal. That begs the question how did they form and what are they.

A brief test showed they did not react with hydrochloric acid (so they are not a carbonate) and the hardness is around 7. These properties are consistent with quartz along with their crystal shapes.

The question of how they got there is a bit more complicated. Were they formed in place or deposited along with the other grains? Lack of abrasion would suggest they grew in place, although they both have fractures suggesting impacts or at least stress on the crystals.

Petrographically speaking, they could have grown in voids in the very porous rock. The crystals do appear to include reddish brown matrix of which the host rock has an abundance. Perhaps the fact that their "c" axis are fairly aligned and they are both zone may be an important factor.

Are there other crystals aligned at different angles in this polished face?

Done speculating for now.

XIII.—The Old Red Sandstone Rocks of the West Kilbride-Largs District, Ayrshire

EM Patterson

Transactions of the Geological Society of Glasgow 21 (2), 207-236, 1951

From Ardrossan northwards to Wemyss Bay the eastern shores of the Firth of Clyde furnish an almost continuous succession of sandstones, pebbly sandstones and conglomerates referred on the published geological maps to the Upper Old Red Sandstone. These form a foundation for the Carboniferous lava-plateau of Renfrewshire and northern Ayrshire. They rise steeply from the coast towards the lava-country of the interior and separate it from the sea by a distance which varies from half a mile near Largs to upwards of four miles west of the villages of Inverkip and West Kilbride. The district described in the present paper comprises the coastal tract which stretches for a distance of seven miles from West Kilbride to Largs (Fig. 3). It lies mainly within Sheet 21 of the Geological Survey One-inch Map, though a small part on its eastern margin is included in Sheet 22.
