The main entrance of San Giovanni in Laterano. This entrance to the church is a late Baroque creation by Alessandro Galilei. Work began in 1735 when Pope Clement XII placed the first stone, and then finished the following year.

The Basilica of Saint John Lateran has the full name of Papal Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran (in Italian: Arcibasilica papale di San Giovanni in Laterano). The complete name of the church, in Latin, is Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris et Sanctorum Iohannes Baptista et Evangelista in Laterano. It ranks first among the four Papal Basilicas (major basilicas) in Rome since it is the cathedra (seat) of the bishop of Rome. It also holds the title of ecumenical mother church for Roman Catholics.

The church has old roots, dating back to 324 - but you can't really see that in the current building. It was rebuilt several times under different popes - and the most prominent style in the church today is the Baroque. Francesco Borromini worked much with the interior of the church, on behalf of Pope Innocent X, in the middle of the 17th century.

The president of France is ex officio the first and only honorary canon of the basilica - an inheritance from the kings of France who held that title since Henri IV (who died in 1610).

When I would recreate myself, I seek the darkest wood, the thickest and most impenetrable and, to the citizen, most dismal swamp. I enter a swamp as a sacred place, a sanctum sanctorum… I seemed to have reached a new world, so wild a place…far away from human society. What’s the need of visiting far-off mountains and bogs, if a half-hour’s walk will carry me into such wildness and novelty.

[Last upload for a little while - will spend time with family, away from my big computer. But I will probably pop in from time to time, at least.]

And this part of the church, the apse, is actually 19th century, dating to the the 1880s. The mosaic is a copy of a medieval original, and according to art historians, not even very well done. The seat is for the pope. This remodeling was done on orders from Pope Leo XIII, who actually never visited the church - and he never sat on this throne.

All Saints' Day (Latin Sollemnitas Omnium Sanctorum) is a Christian feast commemorating all the saints, the "glorified members of the Church who have already reached perfection," both known and unknown. The feast is celebrated in the Western Church on November 1, and in the Orthodox Churches on the first Sunday after Pentecost.

Many people visit the graves of their relatives on this day and the following All Souls' Day. All Souls' Day in the Catholic Church is the day of remembrance for all the deceased. It is a widespread custom to decorate the graves with lights on these days.

On the eve, October 31, in the United States and many countries of Europe folk customs are celebrated Halloween. The word Halloween is derived from the English term All Hallows Eve, the liturgical eve of All Saints' Day. In its current form, which has come back from North America, it has taken on a highly commercialized and secularized form.

So today my minds are with my father! He past away almost 2 years ago.

You past away but my memories still are here. And a person is just gone if we do not think about him anymore. Soon, the 14th of November is your Birthday and i keep our lifetime moments in my heart!

Tracks in the sand

One night I had a dream:

I was walking along the sea with my master.

Against the dark night sky

shone, like streaks of light,

images from my life.

And each time I saw two footprints in the sand,

my own and my master's.

When the last image passed my eyes

I looked back.

I was startled to discover

that in many places of my life's journey

there was only a trace to be seen.

And those were the hardest times of my life.

Concerned, I asked the Lord:

"Lord, when I began to follow you,

you promised me

to be with me in all my ways.

But now I discover

that in the hardest times of my life

there is only a trace in the sand.

Why did you leave me alone

when I needed you most?"

Then he answered, "My dear child,

I love you and will never leave you alone,

especially in times of need and difficulty.

There, where you have seen only a trace

you have seen,

I have carried you."

Thank you for visits, comments and favs!

Now I will let you guess, which prominent Italian family payed for this floor in San Giovanni in Laterano. Answer at the bottom of the text.*

The church has old roots, dating back to 324 - but you can't really see that in the current building. It was rebuilt several times under different popes - and the most prominent style in the church today is the Baroque. But this floor is medieval - it dates to the 14th century, to be completely finished in 1425. It is made in the Cosmatesque style, popular on Italian church floors from the 12th century - but this is a rather late example of it. The style uses a mix of marble and glass and geometric forms inspired by Byzantine art. The popularity spread across Europe and examples can even be found in England (Westminster Abbey). The name comes from the Cosmati family of craftsmen, who, though they might not have invited the style, popularized it.

*The answer is Colonna. And the column is their family symbol. This aristocratic family is still around today.

The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, meaning "abode of God" or Darbār Sahib, meaning "exalted court" , is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India.[It is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism.

The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by Guru Ram Das in 1577. Guru Arjan – the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammed – a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in 1589. In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib, calling the site Ath Sath Tirath (lit. "shrine of 68 pilgrimages"). The temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This has led to the name the Golden Temple.

Here in the picture you can see of the main door of the temple which is closed

However, The ‘sanctum sanctorum’ of Konark temple is going to open after 118 years. (Archaeological Survey of India) is planning to remove the soil from this particular temple, which was filled by the British about 118 years ago to save it from falling. if the soil (Sun Temple Sand) If it is taken out, then after more than 100 years the Jagmohan complex of this temple will be opened.

The temple is shaped in the form of a huge sun chariot. This chariot is drawn by 7 horses, which represents seven days of a week.

The temple is one of the UNESCO sites in India for its unique model of antique architecture. It is also featured in various lists of Seven Wonders of the World

Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom, officially Hohe Domkirche St. Petrus, Latin: Ecclesia Cathedralis Sanctorum Petri, English: High Cathedral of Saint Peter) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and of the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. It is Germany's most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day, currently the tallest twin-spired church at 157 m (515 ft) tall.

Construction of Cologne Cathedral commenced in 1248 and was halted in 1473, leaving it unfinished. Work restarted in the 19th century and was completed, to the original plan, in 1880.

The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires. The towers for its two huge spires give the cathedral the largest façade of any church in the world. The choir has the largest height to width ratio, 3.6:1, of any medieval church.

Cologne's medieval builders had planned a grand structure to house the reliquary of the Three Kings and fit its role as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite having been left incomplete during the medieval period, Cologne Cathedral eventually became unified as "a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value" and "a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe"
