The medieval church of Saint Etienne in Perriers-sur-Andelle (a very small, but charming place - where we ended up because our GPS wasn't our friend. Sometimes mistakes can be well worth your time). The church was founded in the 11th century, with some architectural details added in the 14th century. The paintings and many of the statues date to the 16th century (and there was some additional work done in the 19th century too).

The church was actually closed when we got there. It had just been decorated for an upcoming wedding (hence the white tulle), but the lady who was overseeing the church left it just when I was standing outside the church reading the information sign and asked if we wanted to see the inside to which we readily agreed (this conversation took place even though we had quite the language barrier - I might understand surprisingly much French, but speaking it is quite another matter. But you get a long way with intense nodding and hand gestures. And I do know how to say 'thank you', at least). I am very happy for this well timed meeting, because the interior is quiet beautiful.

It is always good to remember that what we consider old now, back in the day was very modern. Case in point is this part of the church Saint Etienne in Perriers-sur-Andelle. The church itself is medieval, founded in the 11th century, with some architectural details added in the 14th century. But not here. Here we can quite obviously see some later works, this is not medieval (and the church did see substantial work done in the 16th and the 19th century). So at one point this was the modern, up-to-date part of the church when the rest of it was more or less dated and old-fashioned.

Gracias

Long ago I read that a famous photographer said that a photograph is not art if it is not in Black and White. I do not agree at all, since defining the word "art" could take up half the space I have on Flickr.

But it is also that if there are thousands or millions of colors, blacks and whites do something similar. We can photograph a hundred photographers the same black and white object and the result will never be the same.

To give just one example, I have uploaded to my gallery two black and white photographs that, although they were taken on the same dates and in the same city, are then treated differently. The result is completely different.

The one that we could call "market", has some pure whites and blacks while the other that we could call "font", is much softer with a gray scale and a very light brownish tone.

There is nothing special about the photos since they are only a sample and I do not want to extend myself further or teach anyone.

I can only add that it is Saint Etienne, a city that its greatest merit is that it was halfway to my final destination, so I spent a day off there.

Hiking around Lake Grangent

The upper course of the Loire is dammed near Saint-Étienne to form the Lac Grangent, here near the village of Condamine not far from Saint-Victor-du-Loire. The hills sloping down to the lake are ideal for hiking.

The good thing about pictures of saints are that they are generally rather easy to identify, because they generally are adorned with specific attributes. In this case we have mural depictions of Saint Roch, with his wounded thigh and a dog offering bread, to the left, and Saint Sebastian, tied to a tree, with a body full of arrows, to the right. And note the work that has gone into adorning with wooden beams themselves. They are worn by now, being several hundred years old, but you can still see quite a lot of the original patterns and paint.
