Safeguard Coaches

seen turning onto Commercial Road, Guildford

Safeguard of Guildford operate 3 Optare Excel. One of which was bought new whilst the other 2 started life with Tillingbourne of Cranleigh. One of the latter 2 X308CBT is seen on Stoke Rd 05/06/23 at 13:44.

Safeguard Coaches of Guildford have a smart fleet of 15 buses consisting of Optare Excels, Tempos, Versas and MetroCitys, MCV Evoras and a solitary Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Dart. As the weather was nice today (08/02/2023), I popped over to Guildford to see what I could snap.

Safeguard of Guildford held their much anticipated 100 year centenary event based at Guildford Cathedral on Sat 16th March 2024. The well organised family-orientated event was hugely popular with both the general public and bus enthusiasts alike.

As well as numerous attractions at the Cathedral, a trio of free bus services came and went throughout the afternoon with preserved buses running to the bus station (A), Park Barn estate (B) and the Onslow park & ride site (C).

Well done to all at Safeguard Buses & Coaches Guildford - it was a brilliant event!!

There were lots of bus changes in Guildford on 18/12/2021 following Arriva's withdrawal from the Surrey town and as a result plenty of enthusiasts got their cameras out to capture the new order. I spent the morning following Safeguard's new service 18 which runs from Onslow Village to Weylea Farm & Bushy Hill via Guildford town centre. Optare MetroCity YJ67FYX was later joined by their preserved 1956 AEC Reliance / Burlingham 200APB.

The annual Alton Bus Rally, one of the biggest in the UK, took place on a gloriously sunny July 15th 2018 and attracted upwards of 150 buses & coaches including Safeguard Leyland Tiger / Duple Dominant C164SPB.

The Astolat Model Railway Circle held an exhibition at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford on Sunday 16th Jan 2022. A free heritage bus service was provided for visitors travelling to and from Guildford Railway Station and this year it was provided by Richard Kirwin's preserved Safeguard Leyland Leopard / Duple Dominant B53F OPC26R, dating from 1976.

Back in 1986 Guildford based Safeguard commenced operation of route 550 running from Aldershot to Camberley via Ash and Frimley. The hourly service required 2 buses and these were usually a pair of their Duple Dominant buses.

So, fancying a day out, on 30/11/2024 the route was recreated using preserved Safeguard Leyland Leopard OPC26R. Suitable photo stops were made at key points along the route starting in The Grove, Aldershot. It proved to be a great way to mark the end of meteorological autumn.

The route would pass to Alder Valley in 1992 when the retender required two brand new buses (which turned out to be a pair of Leyland Lynx 2s).

Delivered today (31/08/2021) to Safeguard of Guildford in time for the new registration period were a pair of Volvo B8R / Plaxton Panther C57FT coaches. Registered YX71LTN and YX71LTO, both have rear end graphics and carry Farnham Coaches and Safeguard Coaches fleetnames respectively. These shots were captured at the depot in Jacobs Well.

Thank god for rail replacement in Jan, Feb & Mar! A mixed bag at Clapham Junction on Sat 18/01/2025 helped keep the grey matter ticking over until the brighter weather arrives. Buses were running to Surbiton, Weybridge, Effingham, Worcester Park, Chessington and Hampton Court which between them generated 19 departures an hour. Shame so much of it was RATP but heyho.

Friday 23rd June 2023 saw the arrival of another pair of Volvo B8RLE / MCV eVoRa buses for Safeguard of Guildford. BV23NUM & BV23NUP have now received fleetname decals and join sisters BV72KOD & LF72DUV delivered last year. Sadly this looks like it will signal the end of the road for the former Tillingbourne Optare Excels X307/8CBT so I would catch them while you can! Thanks to the Safeguard team for their help in arranging these photos.

The 25th Alton Bus Rally & Running Day took place in Anstey Park on July 21st 2019. Over 150 visiting buses and coaches, both new and preserved, descended on the Hampshire market town for what turned out to be another great event.

Seen in Anstey Park taking part in an impromptu photoshoot are Duple Dominant bus bodied preserved Safeguard of Guildford Leyland Tiger C164SPB, Safeway of South Petherton Leyland Leopard TYD911W, and Safeguard Leyland Leopard OPC26R.

Thanks go to Richard Kirwin and Mike Elkin for assistance with these shots.

This beautiful 1956 AEC Reliance / Burlingham B44F preserved bus belongs to Safeguard of Guildford and tomorrow it will be out and about in Guildford duplicating a number of their bus routes including brand new route 18 Onslow Village-Bushy Hill.

New kid on the block! Former Falcon Buses ADL Enviro E200MMC B30F YX19ONP is now a Safeguard Buses & Coaches Guildford bus and started revenue earning service today (01/10/2024) on their route 3 to Bellfields Estate in Guildford.

The 36th King Alfred Running Day took place on May Day bank holiday 2019. The event is based in Winchester and attracts around 40 buses and coaches operating a large number of routes throughout the day.

I took some photos in Hursley, Otterbourne, Sutton Scotney and Winchester, trying to avoid the extremely busy Broadway terminus.

Route: NIS.

I'd found out in good time that one of my local operators Safeguard was sending no less than 7 of their coaches to Windsor coach park on Sat 26th July 2025, so it was a no brainer to pop down the road and see them. In a very busy coach park (68 of the 74 bays in use), I was rewarded with seeing AA64SAF, GU64SAF, AA16FAR, AA16SAF, AC16FAR, YX71LTN and SG25SAF.

Safeguard (and their Farnham Coaches subsidiary) currently have 20 full size coaches on their fleet consisting of 5x Plaxton Leopards, 5x Van Hool Alizees, 4x VDL Futura 2s, 2x Yutong GT12s, 2x Plaxton Panther 3s, a Plaxton Paragon and a Plaxton Profile.

For my friend, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/tqtran] LOL

There it is. You'll be fine. Nobody would dare to toss you over. Only friendly people on bridge. Oh wait, also folks who want your pocket green. That's all. Very safe. Come visit New York. :)

USNS Safeguard T-ARS-50 (ex USS Safeguard ARS-50) at government mooring buoy B04, off the Wanchai Star Ferry pier. She arrived in Hong Kong at September 26th, 2010 and left on October 1st, 2010. Sort of a "rare bird", the US Navy only has 4 ships of her class.

USNS Safeguard is the lead ship of the newest auxiliary rescue and salvage class of vessels constructed for the US Navy (launched on 12 November 1983 and commissioned on 17 August 1985). After USS Safeguard was decommissioned from US Navy services (26 September 2007) and transferred to the (civilian operated) Military Sealift Command she got the new designation USNS Safeguard T-ARS-50. Note the blue and gold stripes on the funnel.

Shot from a Star Ferry while crossing the harbour. Note: the best Star Ferry line to get photos of this location is the Wanchai - Hung Hom line. I was on a Wanchai - Tsim Sha Tsui ferry, did not have spare time for diversion via Hung Hom, so this is cropped from a wider image.
