2015 Volvo 780

We remodeled my 11 year old "tween" daughter's bedroom a few months ago and are just getting around to posting the photos!

her room used to be pink, purple and orange.......very "little girly", and she thought it was time for a more "grown up" look. i really LOVE how it turned out! it's very "tiffany blue box"!

this is her bed. she wanted something fun and different so we headed to ikea! where else can you find awesome (and inexpensive) lighting! the bed is also from ikea. my husband built the box that houses the tulle canopy. she spends HOURS hanging out here reading, flipping through magazines, and talking on the phone.

It's that time of the year. Edinburgh is all lit up for Christmas; even more decorations, attractions, rides, and vendors lie just beyond the monuments blocking their view. Jenners (right) has recently been lighting their façade, and the city even managed to clear most of the road works on Princes for the month, making this view from 8 stories a little more palatable.

Two 25-second horizontal exposures stitched. No filters. Significantly cropped for composition.

Peter's Aviation pictures.

I know very little about aviation or aircraft. The information above is either what is obvious from the slide or taken from the web.

I decided to start scanning a few aircraft because I know many people may be interested and, more urgently, because Peter's colour slides are fading. I am open to any information on these pictures, location is a particular problem, Peter only wrote a letter code on his slides and I have not cracked it yet! this being RKP.

Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh.

I've been stalking a picture of Arthur's Seat from this spot ever since taking one a few months back with a lomo phone app on the camera phone. But, having finally got there with the proper camera, when I sat down to edit, something quite different happened... Proof, yet again, that I *cannot* (and perhaps should not) take, edit or make the same picture twice...

Textures all my own (various bits of sandstone, bark, etc).

It's old. It's too small for today's mattress sizes. The finish is scratched and worn. It belonged to my grandmother. I wouldn't part with it for anything. I was three years old when she passed away. Grandma always wore a headscarf, she dipped snuff, and she was living in the house with us. I once thought my head was stuck between the rails of our stairs. I cried and screamed until Grandma told me to straighten my head and pull it back out.

Grandma enjoyed playing with me and my kittens. I would bring a kitten to her and she would swaddle it in one of her scarves. One day, she was sitting in her rocking chair, trying so hard to wrap my kitten but her hands just weren't able to get the scarf folded correctly. I looked up at her face and she was staring straight ahead. A little bit of ambeer was trickling from the corner of her mouth. Even though I was only three, I knew something was terribly wrong. I ran and got my dad. Grandma had suffered a stroke. She passed away in the hospital sometime later.

My cousin once told me that when she gets really lonesome for her mother, she takes her mom's sweater from the closet and puts it on. It still has the faint aroma of her mother's favorite perfume. This gives her the feeling of being wrapped in her mother's loving arms. When I get sad, I lie on this bed, close my eyes, and let the memory of my grandmother's love console me.

December 4, 2018 - Baer's pochard (Aythya baeri) is a diving duck found in eastern Asia. It breeds in southeast Russia and northeast China, migrating in winter to southern China, Vietnam, Japan, and India. The name commemorates the Estonian naturalist Karl Ernst von Baer. Baer's pochard breeds around lakes with rich aquatic vegetation, nesting in dense grass, flooded tussock meadows, or flooded shrubby meadows. In Liaoning, China, it is normally found in densely vegetated coastal wetlands, or around lakes and ponds surrounded by forest. In winter, it occurs on freshwater lakes and reservoirs. Critically Endangered Species. It is believed that there are fewer than 300 individuals remaining in the wild. Taken at Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge in Longmeadow Massachusetts.

A pirate ship (minus the pirates!) loaded with tourists travel along the Lover's Beach on the Sea of Cortez side. Pacific Ocean lies at the background of this famous Playa del Amor.

From Los Cabos Guide, www.loscabosguide.com:

Once known as Playa de Doña Chepa, Lover's Beach is another must, but to get to this hidden cove you'll need some kind of floating transportation. Easiest is to hire a water taxi at the marina. The captain will take you on an informative tour of the diving areas around the arch (El Arco), point out Lover's Beach, then go around the popular point for a wonderful view of the dramatic area where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. We suggest you pack a lunch of your choice, some water and plan on spending the better part of the day enjoying Lover's Beach and the striking wind and water shaped rock formations. Ask your skipper to come back for you at a pre-determined time...all for one price. Be most careful here, the powerful waves and currents of the Pacific make swimming quite dangerous. Swimming and snorkeling should only be attempted on the Sea of Cortez side of Lover's Beach.

Playa del Amor (Love Beach) or Playa del Amante (Lover's Beach) - also known as Playa Doña Chepa in earlier years.

Except from Los Cabos Magazine - Issue #6 - 1999

Playa del Amor is the photogenic marvel hidden behind Land's End and is seen in many of the travel ads for Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos. Ironically, it's delightfully small and difficult to get to on foot. Getting there is easy by water taxi; much harder (and not suggested) is to climb the rocks from Playa Solmar. Once on Love Beach, you are surrounded by smooth, towering rocks and water on two sides. In 1940, the population of Cabo San Lucas could practically be counted on both hands, yet John Steinbeck's description of what was then known as Playa Doña Chepa is still apt and thought provoking more than half a century later:

"The tip of the Cape at San Lucas, with the huge gray Friars standing up on the end, has behind the rocks a little beach which is a small boy's dream of pirates . . . and this little beach must so have appealed to earlier men, for the names of pirates are still in the rock, and the pirate ships did dart out of here and did come back."

These Ross's Geese frequently stay together on the shore, but I haven't seen them swimming together before.

From 'Wikipedia': The Ross's Goose (Chen rossii or Anser rossii) is a North American species of goose.

This goose breeds in northern Canada, mainly in the Queen Maud Gulf Bird Sanctuary, and winters much further south in the continent in the southern USA and occasionally northern Mexico.

The plumage of this species is white except for black wing tips. It is similar in appearance to a white-phase Snow Goose but approximately 40% smaller. Other differences from the Snow Goose are that Ross's bill is smaller in proportion to its body and lacks "black lips". One further difference is that the male has distinctive warts (caruncles) at the base of its beak.

There's a laugh in my eyes

There's a waltz in my walk

And it's been such a long time

Since there was hope in my talk

If you never knew

What it is that's new.. it's you

The world's a different place

Where nothing's too hard to say

And nothing's to hard to do

Never too much to go through

To tell you the truth

Everything that's new.. it's you

So if I get to grow old

With many years behind me

There's only one thing I want

One thing I need beside me

For all that you are

For everything you do

For all that you've done

Just for showing me the truth

It's You ...

Nature's Network

Beads of moisture cling to a spider's web in New Lenox Massachusetts.

I'm going to have to stop naming images after letters of the alphabet, if only because I suspect 'R' is going to be a tricky one to find.

This shot is a good example of why, at least for me, it's a good idea to wait a while between capturing things and making images from them.

The original composition was square (imagined square) and at the top of the curve there's a small, natural cairn (probably a pretty large natural cairn, come to think of it - this is a long way away from where I was standing at the far side of a lagoon). When I first processed the image it was pointed out to me that it would be better without the cairn; and it is (I think). I'd not left long enough after capturing it to be objective about the best way to use it and I'd naturally put the cairn in.

There are lots of nice, curvaceous details on the slopes of the Andes but this was one of my favourites.

Musings on: obfuscating scale in photographs

This Arby's restaurant was one of the chain's earliest locations. The first Arby's location was started in 1964 in Boardman, Ohio. This location opened in 1966 in Kent, Ohio (less than 40 miles from the first Arby's location). It seems Arby's had a decent sized push towards college towns in their early years; they opened locations such as Kent, Ohio and East Lansing, Michigan in 1966.

This location was last updated in 1984 when it received a drive-thru and an expansion / enclosure project. This restaurant originally resembled a food stand with mostly outdoor dining and a small interior area with some stools plus a counter for ordering. The original "stand" look is still possible to make out from the exterior. It is hard to find any remaining Arby's locations still open with the original building from the 1960s / early 1970s. Many have been relocated or replaced with a newer building in the 1980s; those that remain tend to be altered beyond recognition.

Photo shoot by my grandfather. I love the sense of the wind coming up and ruining his posed shot. It's charming.

**

There is part of a series from a whole album of photos that belonged to my Grandfather called "Stone's Cottage." What was Stone's Cottage? I don't know. The pictures are charming snapshots of life for young professionals in the early 1900s.

Most of the ladies were new schoolteachers. Most of the men were bankers and lawyers. My grandfather posed, lit , shot and developed the photographs, so he is rarely portrayed here.

It is his eye through which we see.

On the creep.

Stavros S Niarchos is a British brig-rigged tall ship owned and operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust. She is primarily designed to provide young people with the opportunity to undertake voyages as character-building exercises, rather than pure sail-training. She is also used for adult voyages and holidays, which help subsidise the operation of the ship.

She is 195 feet long and is 635 tons. She is moored in Liverpool for the winter, and is making a wonderful addition to the skyline at the moment :)
